    His focus and intensity was amazing. Almost hypnotic to watch. I love how he always plays the shot that will result in the best position, even if it will make the pot more difficult. He was a really aggressive player in a certain way. Its not about just making a good break, but it is about winning the frame with every visit to the table.

    Hendry may have a slower average shot time, but I'm sure his average match time is quicker, he put his opponents away a lot quicker. Counter-intuitively Ronnie has the best safety game of the two. whereas Hendry was so good, and so aggressive with his long game that his opponents would take on harder shots, they were afraid to play safe!

    Hendrys 147 in the final of the victoria challenge cup, last frame of the tournament against Ronnie O'sullivan, having just lost the previous 6 frames, with the match tied at 8-8 trumps any great break Ronnie O'sullivan has done. Making a 147 when you basically haven't potted a ball for 6 frames while your opponent keeps you in your chair certainly trumps Ronnie just banging shots in all over the table with average cue control and no pressure.

      +Ginger Scholes You said" Davis was past his best by then " That's exactly same thing happened to Ronnie also because " Hendry was past his best by then ".In fact Hendry is just 6 years older than Ronnie, Higgins and William. Hendry not only played well with Davis&Jimmy but also stop Ronnie/Higgins&William in 90's----- that's why we call it "Dominate" For example : Ronnie won 95 masters/93, 97 UK C. But he can't even touch World Champion once in 90's, because of Stephen Hendry was in his peak, meanwhile you can't say Ronnie was relatively weak in 90's. They are both genius and skillful no doubt about it, but when people talking about " Domination or Consistency "in snooker history. The only answer must be Stephen Hendry.

    • @woudwilder8324
      @woudwilder8324 8 лет назад +4

      It is nonsens to call the 90's a weak era. It was packed with great players. Davis was still there, White, Parrott, O'Sullivan was already there since 1993 and winning tournaments right from the start, Doherty, Higgins, Williams,...Hendry just made them look like schoolboys and before he lost his hunger to win everything they had very few chances to win something.
      The amount of centuries and 147's that Hendry knocked in in an era where they were playing less tournaments than today is just amazing.
      In fact, I think the standard back then was higher than it is today. Players like Selby, Hawkins, Bingham,Carter are all good decent players but Hendry in his prime wouldn't have been concerned at all facing them.

  • @dougieroberts7045
    @dougieroberts7045 3 года назад +1

    Hendry was the best around at the time, a great player and certainly a player who changed the game, he raised the bar significantly and only a few players around at that time could compete with him, Jimmy White being his main opposition.
    Its ridiculous to measure how good a player is by just when they were successful. Players like John Higgins, Mark Williams have shown longevity, they are still competing at the top and that (to me) makes them better players than somebody who ruled the roost with little competion for only a brief period.
    The bad news for Hendry was his time at the top was brief due to his successor Ronnie O'Sullivan appearing on the scene, O'Sullivan effectively retired Hendry, pushing the game to a whole new level which Hendry couldn't achieve.
    If it were possible to actually sit down and be objective about snooker players Hendry would probably be in the top 10 of all time.
    Hendry was the man to beat for a decade and luckily for him there were only a few capable of doing so.
    O'Sullivan remains the man to beat for more than 25 years although it seems to me his days are numbered.
    Judd Trump looks like the player to take the game to the next level but it will be matched and exceeded in time.
    Like all sports, snooker evolves, players get better and better, the standard is always rising and thesedays with quite some momentum.
    Statistics are only what we want them to be, what we include or exclude in statistics is a manafactured statistic.
    Theres lies, theres 'damn' lies and then theres statistics.

He has more physical talent , he has a better snooker brain , he is more fluent , he has a better cue action and WHEN hes mentality stable he is just a step above every 1 else to every play the game. I get a chuckle out of how may youtube videos claim this guy and that is the greatest pool player snooker 8 ball etc player. In old days there was just as amazing if not more terrifying players to face such as the wizard or the prodigy. willie hoppe and many others. But i just must say I saw henry on his early start and been a fan ever since. he for sure is one of the greatest ever in history for sure. And for snooker he really is a great sort of pitch man for it. Looks the part and acts it and all professional to the core. Fantastic fellow,

    red is one point, yellow 2, green 3, brown 4, blue 5, pink 6 and black 7. It's red > color > red > color > etc. until all reds are gone. Then you play the colors from low to high, yellow > green > brown > blue > pink and finally black. When you miss a pot the others takes turn. The one at then end with the most points, win. Simple. :)

    stephen comes very close to being greatest. no doubt a complete player. but a guy(ronnie) who can score 147 in 5 mins is beyond belief. i recall another 147 against mark king when he asked for the price of maximum break before potting a single ball. He went on to make maximum. I doubt any player has that much confidence to get maximum before potting single ball. Another thing stephen himself admitted ronnie is by far the best player he has seen.

    do to counteract Hendrys ability to knock in a long red and then dish up. There's nothing you can do when your only shot ina frame is to break off and then the other guy clears up. Whichwas so common with Hendry because at the first opportunity he broke open the pack, which enabled him to clear up the frame more often compared to the norm of pciking off all the reds out in the open, and then breaking the pack open at the last possible shot, which often resulted in bad luck and end of break.

    The Triple Crown is a collective term used for the three most prestigious snooker tournaments: the World Championship, the UK Championship and the Masters. These tournaments are sometimes also called snooker's major tournaments, the big three BBC events, or simply as the big three. There are ten players who have won all Triple Crown events at least once: Steve Davis, Terry Griffiths, Alex Higgins, Stephen Hendry, John Higgins, Mark Williams, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Neil Robertson, Mark Selby and Shaun Murphy. Only Davis, Hendry and Williams have won all three Triple Crown events in a single season, and Hendry is the only player to achieve this feat twice, in the 1989/1990 and 1995/1996 seasons

      @vinnietjeuH 9 лет назад +9

      Come on man.. if you want to have a proper discussion about who is the greatest, atleast be realistic about certain things.. We all know what Ronnie went through through-out his entire carriere, and he has just managed to recover from that because of Dr. Steve Peters.. Ronnie has lost on several occasions because of depression, and considering how he struggles in his head during his entire carriere, you must be honest enough to say he would have destroyed hendrys record of 7 world titles by now already, if he didn't have any of those troubles.. I mean in his era, even Peter Ebon and Shaun Murphy have won world titles.. the way he lost to Dott and Ebdon in the world championships was a complete joke and mainly because of his troubles inside his head. Not to mention again on how many ocassions he lost the plot purely because of all of that. If you want to say Hendry is the greatest ever, thats fairplay to you, but if Ronnie wasnt such a troubled genius, Hendrys record wouldnt be existing anymore by now.

    • @jaigray5422
      @jaigray5422 9 лет назад +5

      Vinnie Tinnie You're entitled to you're opinion, but I have to disagree with you're evaluation of him being depressed as to the reason he's been beating multiple times,
      Sure it would have been part of the reason, but the real reason is much more simple, he was playing professional players and lost to players better than him on the day. To say he was depressed and his head wasn't in the match is simply an excuse and under valuing the achievements of the other players who beat him on the day.
      I think Ronnie is a great player and has the potential to be the best, but he will never have the determination, patience, true mind of a champion, great sportsmanship etc etc as Hendry had. One day Ronnie might top him but till that day comes Hendry is the current Greatest player.

    • @vinnietjeuH
      @vinnietjeuH 9 лет назад +1

      *****
      I can only assume you haven't read his biography.
      With a depression there come so many problems with it, not just the depression itself.. you suddenly struggle with things, others might consider 'nonsense'.
      He definitely lost to Dott and Ebdon because of depressions mainly. I think I even saw an interview where multiple BBC commentators also said that's exactly what happened.
      You can't just genuinely believe, losing the person he loved the most, hasn't affected his way of living and his view on snooker.
      If none of that happened, he would've improved his game way earlier probably like he has done now, now he's in total peace with himself and everything around him.

    • @jaigray5422
      @jaigray5422 9 лет назад

      Vinnie Tinnie It could very possible be a major factor but only Ronnie him self will know that and i admit he wasn't playing his best. But before that even happened to him he still lost many times before, to Hendry when he was in his prime, Higgens, Williams etc. He still has ways to go yet to become the best player ever but he certainly has the talent to do so that is a fact.
      There isn't much standing in his way at the moment from that goal when it comes to his rivals.

    • @vinnietjeuH
      @vinnietjeuH 9 лет назад +1

      *****
      ofcourse there were times he lost crucial matches.. Masters 2006 and WSC vs Hendry ofcourse.. But we are talking about a man who beats himself up mentally whenever he isn't satisfied with his game, and when he isn't able to play his A-game.. thats such a huge difference between him and Higgins for example or Hendry.. they can be at ease with fluctuation between their A and B-game.. Ronnie never could cope with that and I think that messed him up bigtime, and not to mention his marriage and daily life. I could sum up so many struggles from what I read in his book, that he went through in his daily life.. I don't think any player has struggled with that many things in his personal life as Ronnie. It had a huge impact on him and his game, just try to imagine that and it explains why he hasnt been dominating this game and he shouldve been.
      He is playing now, how he shouldve been playing 15 years ago if he had a proper life without struggle.
      You can clearly see how much he is in peace with himself, and his head is in the right frame of mind, even when things aren't going his way.. 10-15 years ago he wouldve thrown the towell already.

    If your chief criteria is dominance for a sustained period, I would have to agree with this. Hendry was untouchable for 8-10 years. Ronnie was never that. But that would all be only for the modern era. Steve Davis would have a case from the 80's, but Joe Davis is miles ahead of EVERYONE on any criteria really, including dominance (15 world titles!). Modern fans don't seem to know a whole lot about him though!

    bogdychamp Hardly likely '90s Hendry will be blown by todays pros. I would however call is a hard-fought match. Why are people always saying that players who dominate a long period of time have done that in a WEAK era? Stephen Hendry was way beyond the level of his peers, HE was the exceptional one rather than the others being weak and Hendry mediocre. He turned pro in 1985 at 15. Ronnie in 1992. Doherty, Williams and Higgins, the beginning of the 90s as well. That's not exactly a lot of years in between. I have watched some of your comments and I'm sorry to say this, but I find you a Hendry hater. Give credit where is due, I also find Ronnie the greatest ever, but Stephen is still a 7 time World Champion. Putting Higgins before Hendry, that's rich.

    Ronnie, Higgins, Williams all are great players but that doesn's take away the fact that Stephen Hendry is the Greatest.

    I've been watching snooker for 50 years and I've never seen a player anywhere near the ability of Ronnie O'Sullivan.
    Hendry was consistent and took advantage of an era filled with average players.
    That's not his fault, it's just the way it was.
    Ronnie O'Sullivan is better left handed than most players are with their natural hand.
    He's achieved more centuries and more 147's than anyone else.
    He can play shots that no one else can but he isn't unbeatable
