I'd guess their secondary schools have more than a few chorus and theater teachers who would have liked nothing better than to be on stage. And I believe there are only 6 solo parts along with a duet. That means you only need 8 people who can sing and a decent chorus. XD
That actually brought me to tears. ❤ I am a retired teacher here in the UK and would have appreciated something like this in my time. Whoever wrote the words was a genius and what an amazing way to rally the troops before the year started. Well done everyone who took part 🎉❤🎉❤🎉
Not only is "One Day More" from Les Mes one of my favorites, the spirit of revolution, of perseverance, of creativity, of determined hope honored in the song aligns with the best of what teachers have to give.
FABULOUS! These are truly dedicated teachers.... if they weren't, they could easily quit their thankless jobs and go on stage professionally. It's time this country properly rewards its teachers.
This is absolutely the most creative and amazing thing I have ever seen done in any public school system. I had goosebumps watching this. WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was in WDM Valley's marching band, and my sophomore year we did West Side Story. One time, at band camp (oh yes), Mr. Bird didn't think we were really conveying or understanding the emotion while practicing "Tonight," which was the climax of the show. So he had us do several run-throughs while he passionately sang the lyrics for us. I'll never forget it!
As a retired teacher who sat through many sleepy "welcome back" meetings I found this to be incredibly clever and brilliantly done. Bravo Zulu! Takes me back to those wonderful days of teaching. Hope all teachers have a wonderful and safe year!
Best thing about this? Reading the comments from all of your proud students. What an outstanding way to start the year, and to show those kids how lucky they are!
Wow! I'm watching this during the lockdown of Covid-19 from Queensland Australia. I am in awe of those amazing teachers, choosing one of the most difficult, underpaid, under-appreciated jobs there is - but a job that is so essential - educating and guiding future leaders. A real inspiration!
Beautifully done!!! Goes to show you... When teachers are allowed to be creative and less bound by teaching to standardized testing and goals, their creativity knows no bounds!!!! Excellent job! Not the easiest of songs to sing, let alone get a group of singers together to be on cue... Loved it!!! I hope all you teachers have a great year!!!
+Rita Smith seriously this was amazing. these teachers are wonderful, i hope they have a great year! the music from les mis always makes me tear up, they did a great job singing a difficult piece (esp for people that dont sing) - LOVE educators!! real heros! :)
I applaud every single teacher who participated in this production! I have MUTILATED this song every Thursday for my students & colleagues here in NJ to many aches, groans, and eye-spins...THIS VIDEO GIVES ME VALIDATION!!!! ONE DAY MOREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEE
this is more inspirational than anything I have ever seen at an inservice meeting. It was exactly what I needed after 8 hours of school meetings today.
From this Illinois teacher: WTG, West Des Moines teachers! Your students are very blessed to have such creative and energetic professionals guiding them. Have a great year!
+Fodley Codlot That's because too many mommies and daddies in the US put all the pressure on the teachers and aren't parenting anymore. They blame everything they do wrong on the teachers instead of accepting that their kid isn't perfect and taking some responsibility. Not the teachers' fault.
Megan Wright. Oh, I'm sure you're correct.... The Pathetic PC liberal bullshit in this country no longer allows people to reprimand their kids..... If I did half the crap these kids do today my mother would put me in the wall.....
Megan Wright. You know, if you ask a child in Iraq what a dinosaur is they says " it's Something Americans made to kill Muslims". If you ask a child here who discovered America they say "Christopher Columbus".... I guess what I'm trying to say, is all they learn is a bunch of BS anyways..... LOL
+Fodley Codlot I personally think that the fault is in the U.S. Education system, not in the teachers. There is a major lack of funding for public schools whereas the elite schools (private schools) are able to afford the best resources (best teachers, school material such as books, school infrastructures, etcetera) for their students, public schools in the same region lack these resources leading to inequality in the educational system.
My sister shared this to me because I teach in Owasso, Oklahoma. We have a big kick off day as well here. Something like this would be a welcome addition to break up all the speakers we have to hear that first day!
I was looking at the comments before saying I was watching this as my now-yearly tradition before the first day of school...and found the same comment from last year (from me!). Thank you, West Des Moines Community School District.
+Marianne Murphy Loved it ! As someone who is just about to embark on a complete career change as a college Mentor, it was inspirational ! Great voices and lyrics - very funny.
This was so well done! So Brilliant! My mother is a retired teacher in early childhood education, who has a love for musical talent, and when I found this, I had to send it to her straight away! I hope she doesn't hurt herself laughing at the lyrics! So GOOD!!
Nine years ago I retired after 43 years of teaching high school chemistry but watching this made me want to be back in the class room for at least "one more day". Really inspirational and what fun!!
I've been to a lot of meetings, but never like that one! Too bad. It certainly would have inspired me. Kudos to the teachers in this district for such a great way to begin the year.
I don't ever post comments, but I'm making the exception here. This was PHENOMINAL. As a former teacher, I especially appreciated it. As a huge fan of Les Mis, I ADORED it. Well done! Have an amazing school year. You all deserve huge kudos! Although I'm sure that every faculty meeting and PD from here on the rest of the year will be rather boring in comparison. ;)
I always heard Iowa had great educational systems...this gave me goose bumps...made me love educators even more. SO GLAD I didn't read the published info first (spoiler) - made it more exciting!
I wish we knew what a flash Mob was to be some 52 years ago. Our San Antonio Thomas Jefferson High School Classes of '67, '68 & '69 could have put on a concert to dazzle all 4000 of us! West Des Moines just showed us what could have been! Very well done!
I love this. I'm a teacher and I also happen to love Les Mis and this song. Every year, the day before the last day of school and the day before the first day of school, I post different versions of this song on facebook. I've been looking for something teaching-related that's also really well done, and here it finally is! Brilliant!!!
As a student here who was in sixth grade when this was originally posted and is now a freshman in college (absolutely wild btw) all of these teachers were and continue to be fantastic. I'm so thankful to have been taught by these wonderful people and continue to wish them all the best. One day more!!!! (And hopefully many many more after that)
It's amazing how many "regular" folks are amazing singers! I ccan't carry a tune in a bucket, so talent like this is sort of magical to me. Now i'm wondering what teachers I had that were talented like this .
This is terrific...they should have done this for the kids at a convocation on the first day of school! I laughed and cried through the entire thing. LOVED it. Good Job!!!
no, I'm not crying.... yes... yes... I am... brava/bravo! as I enter my 27th year of teaching, I at times question my resolve and worth as a teacher... I do okay, but I hope to do better each year..... I vow to watch this every time I need a boost... wow.
Bravo! Wonderful! What voices, musicality, and creativity! As a retired teacher (33 years experience), I wish I could have been part of such a production when I was still in the profession. The theatrical effect is complete, right down to the cliche-ridden, mundane Superintendent's address, the same one that is read to every teacher in the nation on the first day of a new school year. The production reminded me all over again of the overarching commonality of the teaching experience in the public schools, the issues, the jargon, and the first day of school jitters. It's the same day-before-classes district meeting all teachers attend no matter where they work, except this one was actually worth attending! Great! When will we see this ensemble perform again?
This made me laugh and cry and feel in awe of these teachers. Voluntarily coming in to rehearse in the summer? Well that shows amazing teacher commitment. How inspiring! Thank you and have a great year!
This was increible! I was sitting here in my apartment clapping and laughing like a lunatic! Good work by all of you! Loved seeing some of my favorite teachers crush it, as well! -Isaac G
This says everything about this community and school! If I were looking for a place to raise children, I would go to Des Moines, knowing nothing else about the city or schools. I wish someone would put full subtitles in for the times the camera is not on the lyric screen! BRAVO, teachers of Des Moine!
I want you to know that this video inspired me to organize a flash mob for the last day of our school year. Teachers at Waterloo CUSD #5 in Waterloo, Illinois surprised our administration with our rendition of The Black Eyed Peas song I Gotta Feelin. It was soooooo much fun!! Thanks for inspiring me to fulfill a bucket list item!
October, 2018 I cried with tears of joy....The energy, the effort put into thois production !! Like others that posted, I do hope that the students appreciate their Staff. What an inventive way to start the year !!
Well done from the UK. There is nothing pupils like to see than teachers performing even if they don't admit it at the time. We need a lot more singing in schools in the US and UK. it is good for everyone.
Makes me SO proud to be a teacher! It must be viral, I'm watching it in CA and sharing ;) It would be great if someone could add the words to the bottom like Closed Captioning. I'm sure MANY staff meetings are going to be spiced up with this, all over! Best of luck in the new year to all - and to those already in the trenches, year round and homeschooling :)

+Fodley Codot: Some of my fellow Iowans *do* have sticks up their rear ends. I oughta know. I've met plenty of 'em as a preacher's kid. But it's clear that West Des Moines school teachers know what's what when it comes to fun. REAL teachers, for sure!
how do they all have such great musical theatre voices?? I love!

I am a retired student, who loves this video. Great form everyone.
the students these people teach probably wont ever appreciate how EPIC this is, and that they clearly have the coolest teachers in the world. lol
Jarrett Self
Well said Jarrett

FABULOUS! These are truly dedicated teachers.... if they weren't, they could easily quit their thankless jobs and go on stage professionally. It's time this country properly rewards its teachers.
I'm crying because you know all these people were into theatre in highschool.
I’m crying bc those are most of my teachers
This is absolutely the most creative and amazing thing I have ever seen done in any public school system. I had goosebumps watching this. WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best thing about this? Reading the comments from all of your proud students. What an outstanding way to start the year, and to show those kids how lucky they are!
How could this not be a great place to go to school? All the planning that must have gone into this! Great job and wonderful voices, too!
Now that's how you start the year! Hilarious - and wow, are they all music teachers!? Their voices were great!
+searmstrong2 Most of us in the performance are not music teachers. I'm glad you liked it!
+MrHeuton Awesome! Just awesome!
+MrHeuton SERIOUSLY!?! I thought every one of you was a professional singer. Truly AWESOME!!!
+MrHeuton can you explain what PD and PLC stand for, teacher?
+Duy Nguyen PD is professional development, and I THINK PLC is professional learning community
I watch this every year before the school year starts....so awesome! Never gets old!
Wow! I'm watching this during the lockdown of Covid-19 from Queensland Australia. I am in awe of those amazing teachers, choosing one of the most difficult, underpaid, under-appreciated jobs there is - but a job that is so essential - educating and guiding future leaders. A real inspiration!

That’s what I thought too!!😂
Brilliant!!! Hope this goes viral!
Wouldn't you love to have these teachers?
Will be hard to top it next year.

Bravo!!! This was amazing, and good luck to all the teachers returning to their classrooms. Thank you for all your do for our children!
Made By Mommy. The United States is 26th in education...... should we really be thanking our teachers....?
+Fodley Codlot That's because too many mommies and daddies in the US put all the pressure on the teachers and aren't parenting anymore. They blame everything they do wrong on the teachers instead of accepting that their kid isn't perfect and taking some responsibility. Not the teachers' fault.

BRAVO!! Beautiful voices, you should all be on the West End Stage, or Broadway! Absolutely deserve recognition for this.
So . . . I live in Cali and if I had kids, I would MOVE just to send my kids to this school!!! You guys rock!
+Shannon Campbell What a compliment - thanks!
My sister shared this to me because I teach in Owasso, Oklahoma. We have a big kick off day as well here. Something like this would be a welcome addition to break up all the speakers we have to hear that first day!
What a great group of educators! All of 'em, give 'em a raise!!!!
Fantastic. This cast needs to be in theatre productions- what great talent!
So proud to be from IOWA! Great education system, great music! Well done comrades!
I was looking at the comments before saying I was watching this as my now-yearly tradition before the first day of school...and found the same comment from last year (from me!). Thank you, West Des Moines Community School District.
Retired chorus teacher from Nevada salutes you! Would love to do something like that here! KEEP THE ARTS IN THE SCHOOLS!
100% pure awesome! Pembina Trails School Division in Winnipeg, Manitoba gives it's golden seal of approval!
Proud to be a Valley grad and Choralation Alum! Go Tigers!!
Absolutely brilliant. I remember watching this last year and loved it. I just got goose bumps watching it again. BRAVO to all involved.
OH MY GOSH, how fantastic! I laughed and cried throughout the video. Hats off to you West Des Moines School System!
Marianne Murphy so funny...I just posted my remark and was going down reading more! Like Minds. :)
+Marianne Murphy Loved it ! As someone who is just about to embark on a complete career change as a college Mentor, it was inspirational ! Great voices and lyrics - very funny.
What I saw here was extraordinary! The West Des Moines Community School District is very lucky to have these teachers and administrators. Cheers!!

As a music teacher, I appreciated this on multiple levels. 🎶😉
Nine years ago I retired after 43 years of teaching high school chemistry but watching this made me want to be back in the class room for at least "one more day". Really inspirational and what fun!!
This is great. Who could worry about sending your kids to school with this kind of staff there to support them!
This is FREAKING AMAZING! WHAT a talented staff! As a teacher I'm SO inspired! Thank you!
I've been to a lot of meetings, but never like that one! Too bad. It certainly would have inspired me. Kudos to the teachers in this district for such a great way to begin the year.
I ‘ve watched this several times and it still gives me goose bumps. Best opening day ever!
What a great way to star a new year!!!!! Really an inspiration for everyone who works in a school. I can't stop watching it over and over.
I don't ever post comments, but I'm making the exception here. This was PHENOMINAL. As a former teacher, I especially appreciated it. As a huge fan of Les Mis, I ADORED it. Well done! Those teachers can SING! That was so frickin' cool. Love it!! I hope these educators inspire their students as well as they sing!
Teacher in green had beautiful voice. How fun.
+littleblondemop A lot of talent there, but I agree. Hers was the best voice of all.
+Steven Anacker I think she is the choir teacher.
Thank you so much! I hadn’t even looked at all of these comments until someone mentioned the flash mob in our PLC meeting today!
I
This is The.Greatest. Thing.Ever.!!!
Bravo!!! So proud of these music educators and their cohorts...and so glad my kids have them as teachers!!

Once again the power of music shines.
That is absolutely fantastic! What a way to rev up teachers for another year!!! Congrats West Des Moines.

The guy singing the "Enjolras" part can SING. Damn.
Great job WDMCS! What a wonderful job - a true example of team collaboration!
Those are my teachers, this is so great
This one brought unexpected tears of pride. Sometimes I forget, what a wonderful world.
Okay. I am moving to Iowa. I am extremely jealous of those who have them as their teachers!
I'm so glad I got to this school. I didn't know this happened
Bravo! Wonderful! What voices, musicality, and creativity! As a retired teacher (33 years experience), I wish I could have been part of such a production when I was still in the profession. As a Theater Director with 4 international Les Miserables productions, i can say, this one is epic !
This made me laugh and cry and feel in awe of these teachers. Voluntarily coming in to rehearse in the summer? Well that shows amazing teacher commitment. How inspiring! Thank you and have a great year!
This was amazing! They have GREAT voices! This should go viral!
Brilliant.
Now my wife wants to teach in this district!

We're glad you liked it...the teachers of West Des Moines thank you! If you click on the CC button, you'll have closed captioning for the video.
THANK YOU! I did not know youtube had that CC feature.
THIS is how you do a flash mob. Love the lyrics and you have a lot of vocal talent in your district.
I want you to know that this video inspired me to organize a flash mob for the last day of our school year. oh i loved this! great great work!! greetings from New York!
As a (now retired) UK teacher, I'd have loved this before the start to a new school term - it would have perked me right up!
4 years later and still cool.
October, 2018
I cried with tears of joy....The energy, the effort put into thois production !!
Like others that posted, I do hope that the students appreciate their Staff.
What an inventive way to start the year !!
that was awesome....what a way to start a school year! lol
Well done from the UK. There is nothing pupils like to see than teachers performing even if they don't admit it at the time. We need a lot more singing in schools in the US and UK. it is good for everyone.
You were great! For a moment (or even more) I wished I was still a member of the Valley faculty. This is the best start to a school year I have seen!
WOW!! This was a wonderful performance! Kudos to everyone that was involved. Such wonderful voices and energy!
+Megan Smetzer Just click on the CC button right under the video and you'll have it!
Really? Thank you Paula Underwood !
+Megan Smetzer: Greetings from Iowa. I never went to West Des Moines (though after watching this, I wish I'd been able to!), but yeah, speaking as an Iowa girl, I'm glad you enjoyed WDM's awesomeness. :) I applaud all teachers and the sacrifices you make for the kids you teach. He is the sort of guy who went as far as he could, even just when substituting, to make sure the kids he taught had a healthy learning environment. He's retired now, due to health issues, but he tries to keep up with those who have graduated. I don't think his "teacher button" has an "off" switch. But when you're called, you're called. It's not something you can just switch off at night after the last bell rings.
I watch this video every time it pops up for me. It brightens the deadened corners of my heart. Amazing.
I never get tired of this! 💕
This is what RUclips was made for!
LOVE THIS! What a fantastic group of teachers... so creative! This was great...if they're did this as a "pre-show" for the year ahead, I can only imagine the great things they've got planned for their students. Have a great year!!
This burst of enthusiasm is just what we all need to kick off the new semester! Thank you all for your creativity and for sharing it. Just fabulous!
I just stumbled across this gem! I would have killed to have teachers like that ;-) Bravo!!! and a big hug from Berlin.
Good Job Wdmcs makes me proud!
The superintendent waving the flag at the end is so cute!
That's so cool that they have so many teachers that are so talented at singing!
Mr. Hudson! You (and Valley HS) went viral! I love this :D Stupendous. So many good teachers here.
Lindsey Kramer
FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m so sorry I missed this 8 years ago. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is absolutely amazing!!! Talent and creativity at its BEST!! BRAVO!!! Wishing you all a wonderful school year!!
THIS MADE ME CRY! HOW BEAUTIFUL! CAN I GO TO THIS SCHOOL?
Its a bunch of teachers from all the schools in west des Moines this one was just at the high school i go to the freshman school and a couple of my teachers were in it this is pretty cool cause you don't really see stuff like this from Iowa😂😂
+Operasingerxo open enrollment is a thing. see if you can get in that way
It was nice to see the people of Iowa pull the stick out of their ass for a brief moment and have a good time......Lol
+Fodley Codot: Some of my fellow Iowans *do* have sticks up their rear ends. I oughta know. I've met plenty of 'em as a preacher's kid. But it's clear that West Des Moines school teachers know what's what when it comes to fun. REAL teachers, for sure!
How could anybody dislike this
Sounds like school is getting better & better! The bar has been raised!
Talented and creative teachers!
As long as there are educators like this out there, I don't fear so much for the future!
I'M LEAVING CAMBRIDGE TO WORK HERE! WOW! WHAT FUN AND WONDERFUL COLLEGIALITY!!
