Definitely to do with that pub landlord. He might not have pulled the trigger but he’s definitely linked to the killing. And moving over to Canada makes it all the more suspicious.
I live in the north east of Scotland and everyone knows this terrible story well. Looks like another case of the police knowing motive and likely perpetrator but lack evidence. Everyone with knowledge of rural life and what young men are capable of through allegiance can now see this scenario play out like a Shakespearean tragedy. Happens in cities too but rural life is harsher. That part of Scotland had three infamous unsolved murders but in two the police got their suspects into court to let a jury decide on all the evidence. Guilty verdicts were delivered. There is still hope the same will happen here but I feel one witness has to break rank.
Sad and very mysterious story. I moved up to the area from England the following summer and know it well. I've had a pint or two in The Havelock and once saw his widow Veronica out shopping in Nairn. I really hope they finally manage to crack this crime and give some closure to his poor family but time's getting on a bit now I guess.
Imho the paramilitary part of that story was either started by the killer, or someone close to him as a misdirection, very convenient it was paramilitary, y would a paramilitary be operating in Scotland at that specific time, I know Scotlands has close ties to Ireland but thats just too convenient

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Police have never released detail of what or wasn't in that envelope! And btw when they reported that they may have found the murder weapon in a drain? A 9mm? Possibly a Browning? I thought no way..!
@williamrae9954 .25 ACP William or other? (Approx 6mm). It might be likely to be able to slip a model 1910 Browning through the gap, but it was explicitly reported that they'd 'possibly' found the murder weapon and that it was a 9mm. The narrative was soon retracted I understand.
A very unusual gun, 0.25 calibre (6.35mm) Model I Haenel Schmeisser not meant for export from Germany. I wonder where they got it from, stolen from a collection perhaps?
