Adam, I've used Color Tune for years--it is a wonderful device. Many people do not know of it's existence--now they do thanks to you. Well done, Adam! Chris/Colorado Springs, Colorado/USA
I’ve just used one for the first time and I can’t believe how easy it was to use and how effective it was in setting up the mixture on my carbs. It is also a great diagnostic tool for finding other issues with the engine and carbs.
Nice instructions, I've been using this tool since the early 80's when I was introduced to it by an aircraft mechanic who owned a Mini just like mine. I still have the same Color Tune that I purchased all those years ago.. Great tool..!!!
Great video. But just one thing; I hope you don't mind me saying but it looked like you may have used a little bit too much force to tighten the plug. You'd be surprised if you've ever used a torque wrench to tighten plugs to maufacurers spec, but it's just a little bit past finger tight. The reason for this is that a regular spark (and the Colortune) are made of an outer metal shell and an inner core. If you over tighten a plug you run the risk of breaking the seal between the inner core and the outer shell. In a regular spark plug, this can cause a vaccum/ compression leak between the steel collar the the ceramic insulator (I've done this myself). In a Colortune, it can cause the glass viewing insulator to separate from the steel collar and shoot out like a bullet (I've heard of this happening).
I've been using the 'Color Tune' since it first came out in the mid 60's. I've progressed through all the models produced I'm not keen on the present 'small' model. I've got a set of six 507916 Color Tunes which are the original 'large' models.
Very helpful video! I just switched from a single HIF-44 on my classic Mini to twin HS4 carbs. I have an air fuel gauge and O2 sensor which works great on a single carb because it fuels all cylinders evenly (as evenly as the manifold can distribute the mix). I thought I had the twin carbs tuned correctly based on the AF gauge, but when I removed the plugs, the two on the drivers side carb were normal to lean, and the two on the passenger side carb were full of carbon. The AF sensor saw the mix between the two and showed within spec. I just ordered a Colortune after seeing your video, and it certainly seems like a must-have for more than one carburetor especially.
Great video. I appreciate that you showed the 3 possible cases in real-time. I have a Colotune but didn't use it yet, I guess time to break the box open. Thanks for posting and sharing.
That is not really tuning is it, its running idle with the Idle AFR setting. Tuning has to happen under wo and load conditions at different rev's. But besides that its a reasonable good tool and cheap to set your idle mixture.. I have one and have it compared with an AFR dial... That shows that the color tune is not all that precise and leaves a lot of room for error , its a rough estimation... but better then nothing...
my colourtune proved the mechanic, has installed too small jet, I cannot get orange at all, on 2 of my wedding cars, WTF, both engine ran hot, thank you colour tune- you proved me right
Adam, I have 5 cars with SU,s on them. Adds up to 12 single carbs. All of your posts talk about a fuel mixture screw which I have none. All of mine are adjusted through the dashpot. Is your type or mine uncommon? No one ever responds to my comments so will see? I guess you click the bell top right. Cheers, Randy
Are they long reach plug has I can't see in your video the reason why iam asking is because I have one myself which looks to be a short reach and my plug in my bike is a long reach

Thank you Chris! It really is a very useful device

Most of m cars are well over 100 years old. I have made adapters for them and the Colortune works just fine. Great video too.
That’s great! You must have some interesting cars
remember using these in the 70s for tuning my l/rovers.bought from halfords, great gadget,
Very informative, thank you.

Never heard of it, many thanks for bringing this to my attention
Gick in och beställde direkt! Vilken fantastisk grej 😄👍🏁
Ja den är kanon!
Very good Adam. I learn something new and interesting every day! Thanks!
I'm glad! Thanks for watching Stig

I had never heard of it...thanks for the heads up and great video.
It's a neat product. Thanks for watching Jeff!

Is it! counter clock wise for too rich? and anti clock wise for leaner?
I found it useful. I use two on my Austin Healey so I can compare the front and back carb.
Good idea to use two of them!
Hi Adam, have heard of it but never used it. Certainly does seem useful and easy to use. Will definitely consider investing in one!
They are a great extra tool to have when trying to solve a tuning problem. Thanks for watching!
@@LivingWithAClassic I've now bought one!!
If it's to rich or to lean at higher revs
Does my weber need jetting to fix?
thanks for the information
AWESOME thanks for sharing

Are you sure they are SU? Some Strombergs are adjusted through the dash pot

You can order the kit with different plugs and different parts to help with different engines.
I use one its great takes the guesswork out of tuning the carb.
It really does! A good visual aid.
Do you know where ro pirchase this? Im from spain looking online and seems like rhere is no stock, any idea? Thanks
They're often on ebay and amazon too
Might be good to pass ULEZ by richening the mixture.
Skip RUclips ads go to the end of any vid then restart
tried to use it my TR7 can't get the angle to see even with the mirror on
That's too bad. Maybe with a mechanics mirror or film with your phone?
yellow / orange is lean . purple is rich . turn screw out to enrich and turn in to lean out
Not on an SU carb, in is richer and out is leaner just like I said in the video
Yellow or orange is rich!!!
Cool!
It's even cooler if you put them in at night!
Hi its Jan here I don't know if you received my email on the xjs v12
No good ☹️ engine needs to be under load.
I humbly disagree. X rpm is still x rpm when under load
Cheers mate, great video.😊
Thanks for watching
