  • He defied the Soviets, and his superiors, with sweets. In 1948, the USSR had cut off Berlin from Western Europe. So a US pilot came up with an ingenious idea to help feed the people of Berlin. Gail Hoverton, then a 27-year-old lieutenant, flew daily missions to drop food and other supplies as part of Operation Vittles. But Hoverton, who'd already started handing out candy and gum to children he could reach on the ground, added handkerchief parachutes delivering candy to his airdrops. He soon became known as the "Candy Bomber".

Fine old gentleman - his candy bombs must have caused real excitement among the children of Berlin in those extremely tough times, which they probably remember fondly to this day.

It was only 2 pieces of gum that he gave to the kids the first time cause that was all he had on him at the time plus he was in a rush, the chocolate came the next day like he told the kids they knew it was him because he wiggled his wings like he said he would giving him the fond nickname Uncle Wiggly Wings. While he did run the chance of disciplinary action his Commanding officer told him to not stop what he was doing he also had some of his fellow pilots help him to do the candy deliveries & everyone got involved with it on the homefront

When a bomber drops candy instead of bombs you know he was smiling as he flew over Berlin.

Starvation is worse then bullying so I don’t care if he bullies as long as he drops candy.

his name is "Gail Seymour „Hal“ Halvorsen" and not "Gaile Hoverton " for christ´s sake.
