The water is warm because it's mineral water spring, it comes from deep underground and comes out hot. If geothermal hot water spring - the water has a lot of dissolved minerals and is supposed to be very good for your health, but it has a strong taste. Bulgaria has the second most hot mineral water springs in the world, only after Iceland.

@@wattstraveling People collect the water in jugs, the water loses its smell after a few days. It smells because it contains a small amount of Sulphur, which is completely natural for hot spring water... once the smell is gone, then the sulphar has evaporated away. Did you know that for the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great, the city of Serdica, today Sofia, was his favorite city? He often said: "Serdica is my Rome!"

The big market you were in is called Hali. "The construction of the building , which spreads over 3,200 m², began in 1909 after the design of architect Naum Torbov was selected in 1907, and took two years to complete." Wikipedia Prices of real estate in Sofia have gone crazy despite the fact how many new buildings are being built.Hopefully there is a good real estate agent, here they all seem like they don't care if they are going to loose a client or not. In general you will hardly find the same professional service as in Canada. There are sites where homes or apartments are being sold by owner, but they will be in Cyrillic. There are not many canned soups, because you can get a soup for about 5 levs at any restaurant in the center and it doesn't seem to have a need. The mineral water where you were has been running like this for as long as I remember and even before my 50+. Great walk you had, always wishing you the best.

@@wattstravelingfun but true fact from the 70s from my parents careless happy childhoods full with joy & freedoms in happy communist BG - a Bulgarian made kid's toothpaste called "Mecho Puh" (Winnie the Pooh) eating friendly was produced by the Bulgarian pharmaceutical industry to encourage the kids, to build the habit, alone to brush their teeth, it was eating friendly, milk sweetener like testing, so the kids back then were loving to brush their teeth not allowing their moms to brush them anymore. Because of this our national tradition alot of the sweet stuff are still manufactured in toothpaste like squeezable tubes to bring & establish memories. Only the great Bulgarian pharmaceutical industry & the chemical one (the 3rd & the 4th largest in the world by numbers of products & volumes, working with Bulgarian made machineries) are missing, till today when even USA in some numbers to be in front of us, even USA, & Bulgarian youth to be like US Americans what a fail, BG is a failed project, a lost cause, no need of such BG!

@@wattstravelingin the 90s when still the great collective village's owned farming coops were existing, before the restitution of the land, BG was still 10mln ppl population, the villages were not abandoned like today but full with ppl & youth still, every village had its own school with teachers from that village, shools had free cantinas, all day kinder garden, fully open 7 days functioning church with preast living in the village, food clothing hardware & construction stores, gas station & auto shop, community services (technicians, tailor, dentist, doctor, birth clinic etc the medical stuff were completely free, the technical services affordable to all) & bakery, so when the kids were going to buy bread this hot & smelling only villages tipe of Bulgarian bread kids were buying 1 extra so they can eat it on the way home. Bulgaria has great selections of dough products called "breakfast" in Bulgarian folk tradition "nobody's bigger than The Bread"! But all these were no good stuff now we have freedom with all her beauties at high speeds!

@@wattstravelingBulgaria & Iceland are the richest places on Earth of hotsprings, Icelanders just use theirs even in an industrial way & central heatings we are "smarter" & waste ours! As we say - BG is rich here will be always something, we'll figure out, if not we'll invent it"!

    • @udififkfkfck
      @udififkfkfck 4 дня назад +1

@@wattstravelingso for the central heatings system (all 28 Bulgarian district cities have those coal diesel & gas power plants (some belong to the old big factories) that manufacture electricity & heat water) instead of using these hotsprings, BG "wisely" depends on Rossia to import fuels to keep these plants spinning. On the other hand if we use them the nation will say to government "we want free heating & electricity we The People went (our Grannies did) to 5 wars, (1885, 1912-1913, 1915-1918, 1941-1945), we took out all these Brits French Italians Rossians Germans Romanians Turks Greeks Serbs out of service, we deserve free stuff", then in the Spirit of the good old South European Tradition, the government (Families & Friends too) won't be able to steal enough just by building & maintaining such plants, so that's why some projects are "no good for the public good" (traditional old Bulgarian government's explaining short accurate excuse)!

A big home-depot type of store in Sofia is Praktiker. It has from lights and other furniture/gadgets stuff to soil, pots, and plant sections. By the way, for any foreigner reading this comment and considering visiting our country, tap water in most parts of Bulgaria is absolutely safe for drinking (Sofia included).

@@wattstraveling The one in the video is safe for drinking as well. It's a natural hot spring water (that's why it is warm). Many of the locals like drinking it, and thus, they go and fill in their plastic containers to bring home. You can drink it as is, or if you don't like drinking warm water (like me, for example), you can cool it down first. We actually have plenty of hot springs scattered throughout the country, thus such a sight isn't a rarity. Depending on the properties and the composition of their water some are ok to drink and some are mostly used for bathing and other physiotherapeutic purposes.

    • @yaonyaon9460

As for markets and stores. I mostly shop in food markets like Kaufland, Lidl, or Fantastico, or the small local stores and minimarts. I'm not a huge Billa fan and have never visited Pepco, but it seems like a nice store from what I've seen in your video. Metro is a nice large shopping center as well. You probably know, but you can buy lots of stuff there, including plenty of non-food items. Other large and popular stores are the Praktiker I already mentioned or Ikea.
As we are on the subject of food, you should try our pastries. Plenty of small bakeries are lurking just by the corner while you are strolling the streets. Most of the time the smaller and unassuming the bakery the better pastries they make, lol.

@@wattstravelingThat's nice! I am glad that you had a pleasant baked goods experience.
If you are curious, I can elaborate a bit about my experience with the baked goods and the cooked food sections in the large supermarkets: Kaufland, Lidl, and Fantastico.
      1. Freshly cooked meals:
Fantastico is the number one of the three. The food there is generally fresh and delicious. To my knowledge, Lidl doesn't have such a section, and I don't like most of the cooked meals sold in Kaufland.
      2. Desserts and baked goods (bread, pastries):
Lidl and Kaufland have a larger variety of breads and pastries in the according section, while Fantastico has just a few breads. All breads/buns you can buy in these markets are generally the same quality. They are rather delicious when fresh. As for pastries, I'd always recommend purchasing from a local small bakery. Be it taste or variety, they are much better than the ones you can buy in a supermarket. Last but not least the desserts. Kaufland takes the top place. The desserts you can find in their bread section or the few sold in the cooked-meal section are tasty. Lidl comes second - less variety but good taste. Last is Fantastico. It has a good variety of desserts (a whole separate section mainly for sweets like cakes and eclairs), but with some exceptions, the taste is rather lacking.

I was totally lost my first trip. I did google translate, but now learned mylako is milk, only it is written in cyrillc of course. I don't drink milk, but did find it so nice and creamy that it was great for coffee and enjoyed it with granola or museli and berries. But ya, a whole different dairy world than our own and the MASSIVE yogurt selections are overwhelming.
I learned to love instant coffee and even drink it at home now. So easy for travel. I love too that you can get sliced that is actually just a roast piece of turkey or chicken.

He was a Bulgarian writer, translator, philosopher and public figure most notable as Bulgaria's first professional literary critic. Welcome, guys and have a nice stay!
If you are looking for a Costco type warehouse grocery store, go to Metro. There are 2 stores in the city. You need to get a member card at the entrance to be able to shop. The closest one is just before the east end of the city. You can get there with the subway on the line, going to the airport. It's about 10-15 min from the centre and it's opened 24/7. Yes, halva is bulgarian, though halva is a alavic sweet food so you would probably find it in other slavic countires too. It is made from sunflower seed. The alphabet you see everywhere is called cyrillic and yes Russians do use it, but you will probably trigger a lot of Bulgarians calling it Russian, mostly because the Cyrillic alphabet actually came from Bulgaria and then got introduced to other Slavic nations like the Russians. I was also expecting for you guys to show the fountain in the middle of the shopping market in the central halls Kaufland, surprised you decided not to show it. The water you see from the fountains is mineral water and a lot belive it has also healing powers because of the minerals on it. It is warm because it is mineral water, coming from the ground. Depending on the location mineral water can be cold, warm or even scolding hot. We have a bunch of different mineral spots all across the country.

The Market hall as you called it is actually now owned by the Kaufland chain , so their prices are a little more affordable. In general Kaufland and Billa are the two chains with a bit lower prices , then Fantastico and Lidl , i don't have a favorite but i go to the one which have promotions on what i need at the moment . We have Few chains for home-depot stores - Practiker , Mr.Bricolage , and as well the IKEA - the one in the Mall of Sofia is small and have just the basic items in it, you can get to the big one pretty easy - take the subway to the "Business Park Sofia" station - same one from few the last video you just need to go out from different exit , and then from the bus stop you can use the free "Ring Mall" shuttle buss to the Ikea and Ring Mall.

The COSTCO style store exists, and it is called "METRO" - except you don't need to pay for a membership. Cyrllic alphabet is the easist alphabet to learn, easier than latin, because the sounds of the letter do not change depending on the word like in English... so the way you pronounce the letter, is always the same. Should take you a week to memorize it, then you can start pronouncing and reading anything

Cereal consumption is not widespread in Bulgaria, and perhaps not in Europe either; it's not a breakfast food that we typically enjoy. Furthermore, Europe's stricter food regulations, concerning chemicals, preservatives, and additives, mean that many products sold in N. America are unavailable here.

That's incorrect. Прясно мляко (pronounced Pryasno mlyako) is simply milk or whole milk.
On the other hand, Кисело мляко (pronounced kiselo mlyako) is a traditional Bulgarian yogurt that we as a nation are very proud of. It's unique because of the bacteria in it that's only found in Bulgaria. Unlike the Greek yogurt and what I would typically assume you'd refer to as yogurt, it has a prominent sour taste.
Whereas Айрян (pronounced i-re-an) is a yogurt-based beverage. It's usually made of yogurt and water (so technically it's diluted yogurt). The commercially available ones usually put salt in it too.

Hello, to choose milk or yoghurt it's good to have a look the percentage - the milk мляко, - can be 1.5%, or 3.5 % . The yoghurt can go up to 10%, so depends how thick you want to be the yoghurt. Same is with the milk.
      Enjoy 🎉

Hinging up in the historical part of the city witch is propebly 1/50 of the entire territory will show one side as.the side of a tourist.Capitalism in EU is not different from the capitalism in Canada and USA.Most of the Sofia s plazas are copped from USA and made like in the USA witch made them different from the one in western Europe. The are many in Sofia 100st of them all kind of different for everything...And yes the country is poor ,poorest in EU but not so bad compering worldwide. For example a cashier working in Sofia in a non stop 24/7 store for alcohol and cigarettes night shift is making like 120 in USD per night which is not so bad 5 days or $600 per week when a pack of Marlboro cost you $3.5 and here in USA cost $18.one think for sure, having a Canadian Income and living in Bulgaria is best choice in world.
