  • I was so nervous to have the hysterosalpingogram done (HSG) because of the worry for pain but also the results. We thought my fallopian tubes may be blocked from my many surgeries. I got very emotional during the test as well as after, so I share what happened in this video!

I have been down this journey and can completely relate. My husband and I didn’t go through with ivf because it just wasn’t something we wanted. We did do serafine for four years then 2 rounds of iui with serafine and trigger injection but all were unsuccessful. The best advice I can give is find joy daily because dealing with the possibility of being childless is very taxing on a persons mental health. I found myself in a horrible state of depression and anger. My aunt who also dealt with infertility and is childless said to me one day you will be able to accept the path you are in and be happy again. At that time i couldn’t understand how on earth I could feel whole, it took a while but finally I was able to accept my life. I hope that you have a little one in the near future but if not I hope for you happiness in what ever life has in store for you. I wish you both success and all the best. Sending you much support 😊

Very happy you recieved good news 😀 i went through years of infertility had ivf and when it failed we were devastated of course but i couldn't go through that again so my husband and i made a prayer of agreement and asked the lord to bless us with a child and i stood in faith in god and his word, never spoke negative and even through 2 miscarriages i never waived in my faith and 6 months after my 2nd miscarriage i found out i was pregnant again at 44 years old . .i overcame a couple of hiccups during my pregnancy but my baby boy was born healthy he is 10 today and he is a miracle from God . Pray and trust in him and will answer your prayers. Godless

I've participated in over 100 HSGs as an x-ray student this past practicum term* (Sept - now...the last day of my entire program is December 8th, and then I can graduate and write the national exam!!!), and everyone comes in super-worried, but most of them are surprised with how quick and relatively painless it is. But I have learned that some gynecologists (that's who conduct HSGs in my province, not radiologists or NPs) are more skilled than others - a few I've worked with go through about 2X the amount of contrast that their peers do, because they're just jetting it in there super-fast, and it doesn't have time to work its way into the fallopian tubes (it's super rare for them to open up right away - it usually takes 30-60 seconds before both tubes show up, and sometimes longer), so they're causing unnecessary pain to the woman, as well as wasting contrast. The best doctors take their time, and they all immediately show their patient the images that were taken, explaining what they see so that she doesn't have to wait for the radiologist's report (gynos do the exam - rads are in charge of the "official" interpretation) to be sent to their doctor to get answers. *I've also been told that it's super-common for the procedure itself to relieve whatever stricture or blockage of the tube that was there, allowing the woman to get pregnant literally the next time she has an encounter with sperm.* But that could be due to the timing too - women usually have their HSGs scheduled within ~5 days of the final day of their menses, and so ovulation will happen pretty soon after the procedure, so the chances of a person who is doing their best to get pregnant actually having success in the endeavor is greatest at that time anyway.
Anyway, glad to hear that your procedure went well, and that they found no issues with your "plumbing." It's always nice to get good health news!
*My clinical site does an average of 24 of them every week - we see mostly young women who want to get pregnant, but also a few who are receiving the procedure because some other test prompted this follow-up (I've seen fibroids, and even a suspicious-looking uterine lining that could turn out to be cancerous, so the procedure is super-useful for other reasons than just assessing patency of the tubes).

I was in so much pain I had to stop the procedure. I insisted that my husband was there because I have had a lot of painful procedures and my pain was ignored. I hit through the fired tube, I don’t know how. I told the radiographer to stop. He tried emotional blacks to let him do side two. My husband did his job and very quietly and calmly insisted that the procedure was ended. Ihad it done under GA two weeks later. My tubes were completely open and no reason was ever found for my secondary infertility.

I am so happy for you.
I don't have the same medical issues you have but I've gone through a lot.
I had 7 miscarriages before I had my baby. I have a odd disorder where my body attacks the baby like a bad virus. My pregnancy experience has been tough. I had to take 4 shots a day in my tummy. (Blood thinners)
vaginally insert progesterone and take a painful progesterone shot every week in the tush.
I almost lost my miracle baby at 11 weeks. I spent 4 months of my pregnancy in the hospital on a baby ❤ monitor so they could make sure my little cub was OK. I will say this...
My gosh it's so worth it.
    Everything was so worth it.
You can never give up hope. Pray to God and keep your faith strong.
    You will be a mama.
You and your hubby will have a baby.
And when the day comes, all of the hurt and pain you've known won't even be a thought in your mind.
    It's all worth it honey.
    God Bless you.
    Love & Light
    Hugs from
    Omaha, Nebraska.

That is wonderful news! I wish you so much success in your journey. The IUI is a piece of cake, if you should get to that point. For IVF I found an amazing dr in NJ who did a modified protocol with less meds.. This was over 20 years ago, although I see he is still in practice. He had an office near Philly so it wasn’t too bad to travel except for the actual procedure. My miracle (non-IVF!) just turned 19 ❤

Oh Maggie! I wish I could give you a hug! I felt your reaction to "normal" sooooo much! That's all I kept saying as I kept getting my results back on our TTC testing. Not what us chronic illness folk are used to hearing!
We also got a "normal" HSG a few months back and it totally surprised me... and this weekend I take a pregnancy test to see if the natural cycle IUI we did a week and a half ago worked!
I'm in a weirdly similar boat to you, but you're normally the one doing things before me! Lol your surgery video and talks about pelvic floor therapy were so helpful in prepping me 🩷
Don't get discouraged if the HSG doesn't give you heightened fertility. It didn't work for us. But fingers crossed the natural cycle IUI did the trick! Thinking of you both! 💕

Wishing for the best, as always.

I am absolutely delighted you got this result! Not having blocked tubes opens up SO many more possible avenues for a pregnancy than if they were otherwise. When I was going through this (my tubes were totally blocked), in looking at the option of ivf, the fertility docs wanted me to have the tubes removed. I never did any of those procedures (for a variety of reasons that felt right for me) but if I had, tube removal would have been one more step along the way.
So glad you had minimal pain (I think it's really only very painful if you are blocked) and a result of clear! ❤❤❤

I was just going to like & not comment 😂 but Maggie I’ve got to tell you… I knew from a young age that I didn’t want to have children. As much as my family thought I’d change my mind when I got older, it didn’t. And here I am in my 50’s and thankfully I don’t regret it, it just wasn’t for me. That being said, I was crying watching how moved and overwhelmed with joy you were talking about your results. I might not know that feeling, my sister described it as unrelenting, that you just want to be a Mom more than anything. But I’m so thrilled that you and Zak got some great news!! Super excited for you guys 😊💃

Hi there. I want to start by thanking you and your husband from the bottom of my heart for your willingness to share your experiences. Your openness and honesty is both refreshing and enlightening. I'm a new subscriber to your channel, and I will tell you why in a moment, but my youngest daughter is not new to it. You have helped her considerably in her struggles with fertility and I will leave it at that as it's not my story to share. That said, she just sent me a link to your channel as my wife of 42 years just underwent an APR and, as you probably know, now has an ostomy bag.
Our experience thus far, which is only a few days, has not been a smooth one. The hospital we had the surgery done at seems to be in a staffing crisis. Both my wife and I contracted Covid-19 while we were there. We received mixed messages from various nurses (even as to what procedure my wife had undergone - colonoscopy vs ileostomy) and she was discharged without anyone examining the ostomy or other incisions. We were given a pack of very limited supplies but no real training on how to use anything. Home care was not scheduled to begin for five days following arrival at home. We felt a bit left on our own to figure things out.
The appliances the hospital had applied were leaking and we tried to replace them ourselves using one of the three they sent us home with. Twice we thought we had it and twice the ring adhesive failed to hold against her skin. We were even treated to the dreaded "volcano" - baptism by smelly fire 😁.
While preparing to put on the second ring I noticed that two of the stitches on the stoma were not attached to anything. My wife is now back in the hospital in covid isolation as they are experiencing an outbreak. I am not allowed to visit since I caught covid there during her first stay following surgery.
All this is just a long-winded way to let you know that you have helped my daughter and her husband (who now have a new little one) as well as my wife and I. Your empathy is as clear as your bravery to act on it. Thank you so much.

We live in Virginia and we live at the beach, Virginia Beach, which has four seasons so at Christmas time we drive out to a Christmas tree farm and they take us out in a tractor pull cart. My kids picked out a tree and the man, " Farmer Bill, { think Farmer Zak }, cut the tree down and he pulled it back with the tractor cart. We payed a fair price and it was just fantastic. We now go every year and it is so fun. His farm looks like yours . Also your wedding venue idea is fabulous. I love when your dogs get in the videos and watch like when they watched Zac changing your bag. We were screaming at her. You have to laugh on this journey. My husband has had Crohn's and U/C at least sixteen years or more. Blessings to your lovely family.

Congratulations on a great outcome of your test. If waiting ‘til you ovulate does get you pregnant that IUI procedure seems like the best way to guarantee conception without going the IVF route.

I’m so happy for you!!! That’s so very exciting and wonderful news. Good much in the continuation of this journey. May you both be blessed in this and may you have the best outcome that can come. I found your channel because I have been exploring all the stuff about gut issues and I’m now starting all kinds of testing to see what maybe wrong. So in the last few months that I have been watching you I’ve really enjoyed the videos and how open you are about sharing your life and your medical issues. Thank you for doing this and helping bringing awareness to all this.

When I had IUI the hardest thing on recollection was the routine of the nasal spray to stop my own hormone production. And the timing of the injection before the insemination. I can’t recall exactly how many hours before the procedure it was but I’m one cycle I had to give myself the injection car!! Thankfully not wrongfully arrested for drug use!! Hope all goes well :0)

I believe in the UK this is a hysteroscopy. My daughter has had several with polyp removal and the most recent opted to have it without a GA.She was much better after that than after the one with a general

I'm so happy for you! I've just got to the bit where you say "they're open!" and now I have a proper smile on my face ♥ Edit: So I have family and friends in the fertility field. I think that even if your hormone levels are normal, they can still put you on medicines because they want to make you 'extra' fertile rather than just normal levels, my Mum used this (my basic knowledge!). So you can have medicines that boost your normal cycle. Or if you have actual IVF then they use drugs differently and your normal cycle is irrelevant because they use medications to give you an 'artificial' cycle (a cycle determined by drugs only not what your body would do without them). Given the mental stress of their field, they may not always seem crazy enthusiastic/ emotionally involved because if they got too emotionally involved in each case then it would be too overwhelming for them in their career. But please know that they do really care! I know from one of my best friends that she loves her job and working as an embryologist means the world to her. She isn't a Mum herself technically, but she is like a Mum to the 100s of babies that she has helped to bring into the world. x
