Damn be tough, but dont put your team on the penalty kill for 7 minutes LOL
to be fair avs needed this kind of spark they were sleeping last week or so lol
Avs were winning... and he goes and does that... idiot.
But they ended up getting a shorty. Devils just can't have the lead ever can they
He probably saw what Marchand did to Liljegren and said why not?
Damn I wonder how the NHL is gonna punish Ottawa for this one
Kadri is suspended for 10 games.
First overall pick awarded to the Chicago Blackhawks
I think they just had to forfeit Tkachuk to the team who would have picked 6th after this one
@@nicolasdaoust28 Nah to the Oilers, they need it more.
They don't call anything consistently
I was at this game. now i get the 7 min call. I didn't know the major was for the cross check after! I thought it was for the boarding. live i didn't see the cross check. I thought he just punched that guy. Good call! Go Avs
I think if there was no video review it's likely it would've been a double major, but on review you see Hughes turn away just before the hit is thrown. If they had the same positioning of when the hit is thrown for the entire sequence, then he gets tossed for the boarding.
Girard reaction after the crosscheck lmao 😂
The problem with the hit was where it happened. If he's right against the boards its one thing, but it was just far enough out from the boards to make it dangerous.
This. Most people think boarding only involves the hit, but in reality it depends on the force of impact to the boards.
The dipshit turned his back when he realized contact was going to happen. Poor rookie.😢
@@mason.11 it shouldnt because thats subjective
@@Spetsnaztyyou might have a point there about force being subjective, but this is still just a completely unacceptable hit. Does it not remind you of what happened to Makar literally last week?
If you hit a player before they reach the boards at high speed, they don't have an opportunity to slow down and reduce their momentum. At the same time it increases the chances that their neck, limbs and back get caught in awkward positions and injured. This has no place in the game. You can make big hits against the boards when players can brace but not while they're already flying at the boards with no way to stop themselves.
6 game suspension should be MANDATORY.... Unless they wanna cry about 6.... Then it's 8.... I'm 52 a former player & someone living with MS, & Dementia already confirmed PCS, CTE, & Pink Brain Syndrome (Only diagnosed VIA postmortem dissection of The Brain) with concussions as the cause. Dayuumm that was some good old hockey
my man Ross lost his mind for about 10 seconds
I think the refs got it 100% correct on this call. Well done.
they didn't get anything right on this play.
I see maybe an interference penalty as he didn't have possession of the puck but otherwise it looked fairly clean. Oh wait, I forgot that this is the pussy NHL, not the real man's NHL.
I think the board looks worse than it is. How is Colton supposed to give up on the play because Hughes goes reaching for the puck? Personal opinion is that Hughes put himself in a vulnerable position and Colton repositioned as well as he could to make sure he wasn't hitting the numbers without giving up on the play.
@@chanses7576
I agree somewhat which is why I think the 2 minutes is appropriate. Colton didn't need to put such force into Hughes at that distance. The cross check to the face is completely unjustified.
@@timchumichuck306
Good analysis. Must have used up all your computing power to process that one.
Man after seeing it i think hughes knew there was gonna be contavt and didnt even protect himself ? Brace for impact buddy
Its like hughes is OBLIVIOUS like what are you doing brace for impact?? You're a 100% right
I think those were good calls. 2 for boarding and thr crosscheck was just stupid.
it wasn't boarding, it's shades of 2010+ where the players are turning their back to the play and drawing calls
@@timchumichuck306 Can't run into a dude who doesn't have possession of the puck for 3 seconds.
@@timchumichuck306Colton saw Hughes numbers the whole time. Hughes never turned and never had the puck
@@timchumichuck306 you are braindead AF if you dont think thats boarding LOL
@@timchumichuck306You could not be more wrong, Hughes does not make any sudden moves prior to the hit. Colton saw his numbers and decided to barrel him into the boards face-first.
I could watch this all day
Calls correct but jeez these young guys don’t protect themselves. Games getting chippy and Hughes looks like he doesn’t think he’ll get hit!
Was thinking the same. It's like walking in front of a speeding car in a crosswalk. Sure, it's the driver's fault, but you're still the one paying the price.
there is nothing Hughes could've done there. He went to the puck as he should. The issue is Colton hit him in the numbers, early, and far from the wall. Hughes isn't prepared for the impact of the early hit, so he was compeltely defenseless. It's a dangeroud and reckless hit that deserved more than a $5k fine
@@peterazarian5001 you just reiterated my point... “Hughes isn’t prepared for the early hit”. I agree it’s dirty but my point is that a lot of these young guys don’t recognize when something dirty is coming. You can either slow up, make contact earlier and ride into the boards with Colton, or bail spin when you see him commit to the dirty hit. The last thing you do is coast in with straight legs like it’s a summer skate scrimmage.
It’s very odd Hughes turned right when the pucks going left. It’s a hockey hit that didn’t look dirty. A minor penalty imo too.
Exactly. Why is Hughes not expecting the shoulder hit from Colton? 99 out of 100 times a player in Hughes' position should be expecting contact there. I know Hughes doesn't touch the puck, but the puck is within reach of both players. Colton simply does what most players would do in that situation and Hughes is inexplicably unprepared for it.
It's the foot that changes it for me
Came back to this clip after Luke got absolutely smoked tonight on a very similar play. The kid just does not seem to understand that he needs to protect himself in these moments, and the NHL is doing him, all the players, and all the fans a huge disservice by attempting to police "dangerous contact" like this out of the game. Truly sad for those of us who actually enjoy the sport of hockey, to see it cannibalized by a bunch of suits trying to fundamentally change it into something it isn't, so they can sell it to a different crowd of ppl who do not care about it at all.
@@xRawPower agreed, well said.
I just got home from this game. There were several hits like this that led the Avs to a 7 minute penalty. The Avs in the first period played like shit, but they killed it in the second and especially the third. Lots of Devil’s fans there.
This hot def sparked the avalanche and woke them up. They were actually skating well in the second and third. it felt like a playoff game.
@@willster7851 I told my buddy after the first that they were going to get reamed in the locker room and come back skating and playing like an NHL team. He started laughing and said I think they got reamed. It was a good game after that.
They’re all running away from a place they’re so loud and proud of. Ain’t no green pastures here! 🤦♂️
Never seen a penalty stack like that to 7 minutes....so like if they score within 2 of those 7 does it drop to 5 or does it stay
I could be wrong but I think it would be washed out if they scored before the first 2 mins. For the 5 min penalty they could score as many as they want within the 5 mins and it won’t be washed out
it stays so basically 7 min major, but the last 2 min of the penalty are normal
@@yakimeshi2268 ref called it minor boarding call so technically 2 different penalties, was a 5 for the cross check on meier
When a major and a minor are assessed to the same player at the same stoppage, and they are the only penalties assessed at that stoppage, the major is always served first.
@@BigC144 yea ik but i was saying it was basiclly a 7 min major even tho it’s not technically

Good call by the ref. Usually I'm poed with their game management calls to balance out the penalty stats.

Can we get the end of game shenanigans from Flyers vs Sharks? I think there was 4 misconducts in the final 5 seconds.
Nearly the same hit on Makar the other night that was a no call
Yup exactly. Think back against Seattle in the playoffs too when eberle hot cogliano head first into the boards anD cogs left w a neck injury. No call in that one either.
@@willster7851and that was garbage. Officiating in the NHL has been awful for a while. No consistency. I also think the injury angle is a bad way for the league to look at things. Not getting a serious injury could be because of a matter of centimeters. The hit, if it's illegal, should be dealt with the same whether the player breaks their neck or doesn't miss a shift.
As a life long avs fan: I think the calls were correct, Colton got a little out of control for sure. Boarding is what it is, mainly say that cause this game was already aggressive, but the cross check was just so uncalled for. Just didn't need to do that at all for any reason, especially when we are down and now have 7 min of penitently killing to do. Overall, great game to watch!!
Avs weren't down, they were up 2 to 1 when this happened
This is why i don't watch much hockey anymore. It's turned into "I can just turn my back to someone and they can't hit me without getting a penalty. So I'm going to turn my back to everyone, all the time." It's lame.
Problem is they don't call this consistently. Makar was boarded far more obviously than this hit with officials literally standing by him earlier this season and no call whatsoever
Yeah but Hughes is one of the leagues golden boys, he gets special treatment
Makar lost an edge before Okposo even touched him and the touching part is debatable because you really can't tell from the replays.
Are you saying Makar isn't one of the league's golden boys?@@kevinrasmussen1319
And in the playoffs the boys in stripes would say play on...
100% boarding but Hughes puts himself in that position too. if you watch him skate. first he gets slower and in the last second turns his feet to block out Colton with his hip. thats why he is so light on his feet. if he didnt turn his feet both would have crashed into the boards shoulder on shoulder. i think its a short suspension.
The last second "turn" literally has no impact. It happened less than 0.5 sec before the hits. Wouldn't have changed the outcome if he didn't
He saw hughes number and still went for a big hit. What do you think is going to happen. Penalty 100% of the time.
Can't excuse the cross-check, but what is Hughes doing? Daydreaming and not even going for the puck? Protect yourself young man.
It feels weird victim blaming but for reals WTF was Hughes doing there? He didn't deserve that dirtiness but, like, he barely even checks if someone is close and doesn't really play the puck?
Protect yourself? The guy hit his legs first, it's just dangerous and away from the puck.
@@SuperHeadwound Hughes is clueless. If he's not going for the puck, what is he doing exactly?
@@jangles7906 He was going for the puck before he got hit. Didn't you watch the clip?
May have not been boarding to some but a definite slew foot on the initial hit and the hit to Timo was just stupid. Thank god colorado survived that game cause Ross Colton could've screwed them
Funny... girard got smoked way worse in 2022 playoffs nearly same play with no call... what's absurd here though is that a min before this the Avs got called for to many men?.. when clearly it wasn't... do think Toronto asked about that when the refs where on the phone with them...lol
Incredibly dangerous hit, so so so dirty.
Nah. Hughes was daydreaming there. If he protected himself like 99% of players would have, that hit would have been nothing. The cross check was uncalled for though.
Hughes is an idiot! Just asking for the boarding call by positioning himself like that. Could have ended his own career! But Colton’s crosscheck was just reckless. I know he was anticipating the obligatory teammate retaliation, but you don’t crosscheck a guy to the face.
Lack of ethics and dirty play, an Avs tradition since 1995. Nice to see them finally getting punished for it.
“Shoulder to shoulder”
Hits him between the numbers
Yeah, that should have been 5 for attempt to injure for kicking Hughes foot during the hit and 5 for the cross-check, definitely not the worst calls in November
Hughes took that hit really well
Lol
Am I the only to think that it looks like Hughes haven't played in this league before?
Hughes forgot he wasn't playing in a no-check league for a second there.
This isn't the first time that Hughes has been unable to prepare himself for body contact. This isn't Junior A, this is the NHL.
Devils need another Crash Line...
Fuck yes. Think of what would’ve happened to him with McKay and Peluso on the ice
Now review the hit on Makar in the previous game
The one where Makar's left skate lost an edge before Okposo even touched him, if he did touch him.
devils might need to add a goon to the roster
Colton went full on spazz mode on that shift. What a dork.
Lol compared to the hit on Makar this really doesn't look like anything
Imagine these 2 in the finals???
This League is bush. Back in the day, a star like Hughes would have been protected! Someone would lose teeth for a disrespectful hit like that! This kid is one of the premiere players in the league! Protect him!
Good call...this hit reminds me of a hockey joke...why cant Jesus play hockey? He keeps getting nailed into the boards...Hope Hughes is ok.
Seems appropriate.
Clearly there was intent to injure on both the hit snd the cross check. A suspension should be handed out.
Avs fans sorry as hell for booing these calls. So many rich folk who don’t know hockey at these games now
Correct me if im wrong, but why doesnt anyone discuss interference with this hit?? Colton had the inside and could have easily picked up that puck, but decided to slam Hughes WELL after he last touched the puck
For sure a shoulder on shoulder check followed by defending yourself when when someone comes after you for it should be punished with a game misconduct, SEVEN MINUTES shorthanded and what the hell let's give him the death penalty.
Cross checking someone in the face is defending yourself😂
I feel the boarding should've been 5 and the crosscheck 5 imo
If I was on the ice there would be a fight win or lose.
And nobody on the Devils goes after him?
As much as I agree with you, they've officiated that out of today's game
Hughes is built like just Bieber he ain't ever seen a hit like that
Puss move by Colton. Not even going for puck. When are teams going to realize when a teammate does this type or sht that it's only going to escalate and stop giving slaps on wrist.
Even in the older days that would be a boarding or at least interference, the cross check to the face probably nothing
I think Ross needs to be self-policed. People continue to say that enforcers and fighting aren't needed any more, but here is yet another example of why they are.
Nah they got the penalty. If you don't get one, you self police
I agree, because these dumb people are at least a fan of Gary Bettman. And that’s why the enforcers are no longer fighting with each other in defense of superstars who are constantly hurt
@pagejames8754 agreed, but what Meier would have been injured? RC has to be ready to answer the bell when it dings, or learn another way....
Meier is completely fine. Dude didn't even get cut lmao
who won?
I get the call but when did NHL players go into the boards and not expect to get hit?
So McDavid crosschecked JT Miller in the face. Didn't recieve a major for that. So what constitutes a major now?
miller hit him back instantly is probly the difference
He didnt board
With Bettman, it all depends on who you are.
Mcdavid punched him while holding his stick. He didn't crosscheck his head. I'm not an oilers fan

How are Av’s fans going to justify this one?
They aren't from what I've seen. You have to call that boarding even if it was a shoulder hit. Then the cross check was just plain stupid. Pretty bad sequence for Colton that could have cost his team the game. If the Devils had any defense at all they could have won. Gave up like 10 odd man rushes. You can't cut Colorado's forwards loose like that 10 times and expect to win anything.
Colton was fined the max of $5000 for the cross check to Meier. No mention of sitting some games out.
Claude Lemieux Jr.
The guy out for blood
Hughes got Fd up

When the ref is shaking his head before he announces your penalty, you should know you f'd up. I'm surprised the board was only 2. That was a super dangerous play. I woulda called 5 and 5.
It was a clean hit and wouldn't have been called five years ago.
@@franklee6301 Definitely was not a clean hit. Pretty clear boarding penalty, especially by the way the rule is written, but also how it's been called since a lot longer than 5 years ago. And they're hopefully going to crack down on plays like this at some point. Similar thing happened to Makar a few games ago, and I thought that was super dangerous too.
Guys are moving too fast nowadays for plays like this to be ok. Tie him up and ride him into the boards, sure, but don't hit a guy at high speed in a race like that.
Devils need enforcers urgently, but it looks like Gary Bettman’s entertainment is for superstars to protect players, so the enforcers era is pretty seedy
