This song is about a girl that bob weir knew in Prauge named Gadec minor. The keys in the song go from G to A to D to E to C minor. The soviets took over in the 60s and he had to leave the country and her as a result. The line, "I still sing you love songs, written in the letters of your name." That's a direct refference to her name being spelled by the keys. Knowing this made this sad song all the more sadder.

You don't have to like her, but if you can't respect her and her contributions to a band that often appeared to have no idea how to utilize her many talents, than I totally agree -- you can't respect the Dead. She persevered, always doing her best and never complaining, right up to her last day in the band. The band never addressed her problems hearing herself onstage, and did precious little with the songs she wrote, which were damned good. "Rain," possibly the best of the lot, never got played once, and that would have been the shit to hear live. She was given no possible pathway to success by the band, which is deeply disappointing. Vince Welnick was treated similarly, but that's another story.

The comments about Donna are baseless since she had to contend with the wall of sound and this was not studio work. Donna and bob and Jerome and billy and Phil and pigpen and Brent and Mickey et Al are Gods children doing their best at entertaining us dead in songs that enrich our souls long after we all pass on. Donna did her best or bob would not have kept her after her husband Keith died in that traffic accident. Bob Weir was the glue that held the Dead together for us as long as it lasted. Donna is still singing in Alabama. Jerry and Brent are nodding and winking to each other in heaven, especially when they surprise each other that they played in sync or it just sounded good. Don’t complain, find the good in the music and keep the songs in your head, then and only then, will the music never die. Hey now.

Keith and DJ sounded INCREDIBLE in 77-78
Donna Jean sounds like crap when she gets all Yoko Ono screamy and Jerry wasn't so keen on her but this performance is an example of how great she actually could be.

I'm getting really tired of people trashing Donna. There are shows where each and every member of the Dead have had off nights, flat, not holding notes etc. Where are those criticisms? If you think that Donna is off on this song you are utterly tone deaf, and really should not be publicly evaluating these posts. You make yourself sound musically illiterate. If you don't like the arrangement, that is purely taste, but don't say she is off key. Lastly always remember these mixes aren't prof qualit

....word has it, Donna had trouble at concerts hearing the rest of the band and sometimes got off key...I'll tell ya, in those days it was a real problem. In her studio performances, she was good...The band wouldn't have kept her around if she was always discordant.

The reason why Keith and Donna were asked to leave is Jerome wanted more production from Keith, and it was not there
Yes, Keith had an exceptionally smooth touch to the piano and yes. Keith did well on the studio production of wake of the flood - but more was needed.
