I love his design, the eyes jump out at me because they're closer to a realistic lion than a stylized one we usually see in the series. Since he is from the first guard so far in the past, it clues us in that lions used to be feral and possibly way more primal, and the first kingdom was the first step was to building a more civilized world a la the Pride Lands.
