An antique store I have been in a few times, had a box of misc. tubes and I asked what she wanted for the tubes. She immediately grabbed her phone and started looking up each tube on Ebay! I said her to: "Stop right there. Those are used tubes, untested, you have no way to test them so why are you even attempting to put a value on them using Ebay? That is not fair to me or any customer that comes in here. You know what you paid for them you should add a markup % and sell them as is". I turned around and walked out of the store.
I gave you a thumbs up. However, there was a chance to discuss and educate her at least to your perspective and level of knowledge. These estate sellers and thrift store owners are trying to eek out a living just like the rest of us. I don't think most of them make too much money. In speaking politely you might make a good connection that will ask your advice and likely unload slow moving or unrelated items at a great price to you and maybe give you first dibs on something hot knowing you'll check it out and buy it with no remorse. To everyone reading this try to work every encounter to your advantage. It is not always a successful venture, but it will work out positively plenty often. And again at times we'll be very disappointed with how some will regard and handle vintage items we vintage electronics folks respect and cherish. God Bless!
@johnnytacokleinschmidt515 I can agree with that. Taking that stance has worked out in my favor on more than one occasion. Although sometimes it can be hard to do.
@@0tt0zI had the same experience with probably the same woman or at least the same machine model! Nowadays antique dealers don’t just want the $10.00 markup to help pay the bills but rather they want to over squeeze every drop of cash out of rusty goodies that they want all of!
Perhaps I should have also added that this is a boutique type antique store. They have given my name to customers who wish to have an old radio repaired. I live in a touristy area, and know many of the antique store owners, consigners, etc. And usually get great deals. That time it pissed me off and I let her know how I felt!
American Pickers ruined the chance to get older stuff at a reasonable price in my town. Everybody bases the "value" of what they are selling on what they see on TV.
Hey Mate. Thanks for the rant. We needed that and those flippers sure is the perfect topic. Let's all agree on kicking the next one we come across in the nuts. Stay cool.
Gets me what they want for vintage electronics that don't even work. Almost like it's gonna cost you nothing to fix it but your time, but even your time is worth something right? Bottom line is something that don't function is a piece of junk and should be sold at the junk price. Great video!!! Cheers! 🍻 from Thomasville, NC! -Al
Everyone seems to think that anything built pre-1990 and in some cases even after that is worth a small fortune now, even if it's a worn out POS and it doesn't only take a lot of time, not too seldom there's faulty unobtainium parts and you will get stuck fixing it unless you wait for years for the part to appear and pay an excessive amount for that aswell. I just wonder, does anyone actually buy these ridiculously overpriced items, or do they just drive the prices up and up and people see that and try to sell their identical model for the same price, without anyone actually buying?
At Dixi Gas show in Sevierville Tennessee the vendors will be packing up the mourning. the show started until the promoters made rules. No trailer doors open until 7 AM starting day of show.
I've also run into that with people at estate sales where you get there at the listed time, and the stuff is clearly picked over, or they think every common rock LP is worth a fortune , and the records are priced above the prices on Discogs. Of course the same goes for most thrift stores. I have gotten so discouraged, that I don't go to these places any more. There are people who have booths at antique malls, that are all records. They are priced the same way, but these dealers do a brisk business, because where I live records are so popular, and hard to find. I will admit to doing a lot of flipping on ebay, but it is either records I already have a copy of, or other things not related to records or electronics. I know enough about antiques and collectibles, that I have a good idea what things are worth without looking at my phone. That Roy Rogers looks like an album from the 1940s, that people could fill up with a random selection of Roy Rogers 78s. I have a similar album for Eddy Arnold. To be honest I wasn't aware people were paying that kind of money for CRT televisions from the 1990s and 2000s, other than the obvious Sony Trinitrons, which were so expensive when they were new, not a lot of people bought them. I can't drive either. I know just what you mean.
In my state , your not allowed to put CRT tv sets in the trash. You have to PAY $25.00 and UP depending on size to have it recycled ! EVEN WORKING SETS !!!! That kills me.
Ive come across people that are reasonable but there have been some that have the American Pickers Syndrome. They think they struck it rich on a beat up vintage radio.
When I’m at estate sales looking at electronics I generally have my phone in had, but that’s only to make sure I’m not paying too much. If they’re asking $50 and I can get it online somewhere for $40 that’s good info to have. I’m sure people see me as a flipper.
Reminds me of some old fishing reels I was selling the family had various models , over the years, many of them, along with a fruit cake can of parts and a guy came over to see them, and I didn’t know the value but I said 50 bucks advertised, he offered me 3 bucks and said if I went to the fishing marine type flea markets I could do better. I said no thanks and took the pile to the local town recycle center, and in the metal dumpster it went, after I crushed every one with a 3 lb mallet. My sister did good going to estate sales for furniture, everything was tagged but you had to get there early on line as she didn’t work, husband did, so got Ethan Allen used real wood furniture for my mother, at a fraction of the cost new, but was not beat up. Before flippers. Like a hobby to her, but she bought broken appliances and the like and expected me to fix them, like a tree branch trimmer with a busted switch, for 3 bucks, then expect me to fix it, for her use. Had enough of that. And dealing with the others who don’t want to pay a fair price but instead want it for nothing. Rarely someone sees a very good deal and off they go with it. I’m not trying to make money off it. Even the professional type garage sale neighbor down the block, he buys the stuff, prior, and it all goes out in the driveway - he operates with a big wade of cash bills in his hand, counting it continuously. What a character. Just had to mention it. I just moved and had to get rid of a full garage been living there for close to 40 yrs and I’m a DIYer and my late father was a mechanic. I destroyed it all or cut it up before hauling off to the town transfer station, even there I’m attacked get no offers to me by others there - of some cash but they think it’s good, looks good. But busted, is all I say, then they look closer. Busted, by me. If you were my neighbor it would all be free, what you wanted, even had an old Simpson 260 perfect, my portable cassette players from years past, high quality tools, a variable speed 10k btu inverter type window ac one year old, etc. and take your time, no hurry. The rest I would destroy and in my suv off to the town facility it would go. And plenty of marine and fishing equipment - no junk. I remember my Dad would open the back of the TV and find the dead tube or two and replace it, no calls out to the service guy as we were poor, and Ed Sullivan on Sunday evening. That’s it. Waited all week for the show, on black and white. Scary back there when he opened the TV while energized, I just peaked around. Peace.
I have to say I am curious about that possibly early 80s Zenith console stereo. That's pretty late in the game for a console stereo and you usually never see repair videos on them so looking forward to that one.
Flippers have ruined so many of my hobbies thanks to eBay! Everything I like to tinker with is now extremely overpriced. As for CRT TVs, if I were to drive around on trash day I’m sure I would find one if not more. I’ve picked up a few CRT TVs off the side of the road and most have nothing wrong with them.
Thinking about TVs My grandma and had her old quasar from when I was like 5 years old and 1975 up until she died in 2000. You know they just kept it. I've seen other people they just keep the TV. They didn't care about anything like other input jacks or output jacks. See these young people don't get that about televisions. I actually have a friend of mine that I used to work with and he's 30 years old and he wants one of those old TVs. He thinks it's neat and I've seen a couple of other younger people who want those old TVs.
RUclips has a translate option under your comment. It takes "bed wetters" and translates to "bed waters." Lol😂 I do think there are opportunities for a different frame of mind to yield different results. And where were the bed wetters? I think I missed them.... 😅😊🎉
Great series of rants Bryan. Yours never get old. LP record prices are just nutso thanks to the dang internet. It is a double edge sword if you really want what you find there. You also have great tastes in a variety of music. Nice Air King model 142 known as a Skyking. Pretty sure was identical to the design of the model 4 where you can find its schematic on line.
Yup I'm 66 years old now and have a pretty good collection of some of the things that you were showing plus a collection of phonographs no one will give a second look at. I just enjoy them while I here and don't worry about what will happen to them when I'm gone.
That would be a blast. RTPN you could do a video every month or two with nice cuts on interesting things and good interactions or occasional thumps and bumps. Just be reasonably humorous and cordial in those encounters and it will be amusing and entertaining. Somebody go and make friends with Bryan and take him on adventures.
here around here i been finding alot of PS 2 Gamesystems in the Junk, Got all but one going, seems its not much going wrong with them, just people won't fix them, All them just needed cleaning and Belts, the one thats not fixed yet needs Laser, but easy to change if i find one, But i do Collect old Game systems and Radios, those are easiest for me to work on right now. I do some TVs but not many. Just can't see why people don't want to fix their old systems when all most is belts being worn out, simple change.
If you don't enjoy flea marketing and thrifting in and of itself, you will always overspend on this kind of stuff. Probably 70% of the time, I don't find anything worth buying. But for me, I actually enjoy it. Finding a good deal on something I want is a bonus.

The Realistic radio at 8:20 is something like a 12-625. They are great radios in that they are very reliable. Volume controls will likely need to be cleaned. What I like the most is the only integrated circuit IC is a C1212 audio output. Everything else is discreet. I have an HP low distortion audio oscillator rack mount style that goes perfectly with my 331 distortion analyzer. The old stuff is great. At least for me. And I have newer stuff as well. *** I've been thinking how I could add an RF stage to the AM section of that Realistic radio. 23:15 find a small or medium sized powered sub-woofer and install inside or outside if it causes acoustic feedback to the record changer. It will completely improve the experience and satisfaction when using that console. I do it with compact systems and small consoles. I like that old radio. Really nice! 47:30 our WATR 1320 seems to do that frequently, but not at the top of the hour. I'm suspicious about this practice. I don't want the AM to go away. I do DX from time to time and it is simply an amazing technology.
Goodwill already cherry picks out the "good" LPs and puts them on eBay or their own website. All they put out in the stores are junk nobody wants, like Lawrence Welk and Sing Along with Mitch. Then they raised the price from 99 cents to $1.99.
Yeah I've seen those flea market flippers. I've seen people and some of them are these younger 20 something and 30 something. And they act just like that where everything is something for them to just buy and flip buy and flip.
