Beaver teeth and playtime with the babies

  • Edit to add: no I have never been bitten but I don’t ever give them a reason to either. When they play wrestle with each other they take great care to not bite into each other. They nip each other sometimes but nothing like a wild adult aggressive beaver would do when fighting for real. They will open their mouth in an attempt to play or nip my clothes but I don’t let it persist. I redirect the attention to something else.
    Beavers have orange front teeth because of a layer of iron in the enamel. This makes them super strong and allows them to chop down trees. They have 20 teeth in total. #beavers #cuteanimals #funnyanimals #beaverdam #wildliferescue #wildliferehab #beaverteeth

    • @terredee

      I think the classification of beavers will change - and soon - based on the species’ unique characteristics, such as their specialized tails and their capacity to create habitat for hundreds of other species.
      Right now beavers are lumped into a category established in the 1700s. Modern methods of species classification include DNA analysis and a much more refined recognition of physical characteristics that distinguish one species from others.
      Rodentia is a huge order - almost half of all mammals are considered rodents, simply because they have a pair of continuously growing incisors in the upper and lower jaws.
      That’s true of beavers, but it’s also true of rabbits, whose classification was changed from Rodentia to Lagomorpha because they have tiny, secondary teeth behind the main gnawing teeth.
      People have only become aware of how important beavers are to ecosystems, and our own interests as well. Some are still ignorant of these facts, despite water scarcity brought on by prolonged droughts and massive overuse. Some of the beavers shown here were orphaned when some idiot blew up their dam, or shot or trapped their parents to take their skins and other body parts.
      Even in drought-ravaged California, where millions of native trees have died in the past few years, and in 2022 the Governor created new Warden-level positions in the Fish & Wildlife department specifically to protect beavers and their habitats, beavers can still be hunted for fun or profit (!) That has to change, and soon.

    First saw Beaver and their work Michigan, they were very very skittish and not easy to observe. Met beavers North in Ontario Canada and they were calm and unbothered to be observed, they were amazing there and I never saw any so calm and natural. There are Beaver here in Missouri plentiful and I see them often but they are shy too, but with patience they do their thing and are a joy to hang out with while they work. Very nice of you to care for the babies and share the experience. Mostly I was shown the example of them being pests and a nuisance and knew of them being treated as such, but I never saw them that way and found them fascinating! Nice to learn the way of the Beaver with you 👍😎

    • @terredee
      @terredee Год назад +2

      I think the difference in beaver behaviors you’ve observed comes down to human overpopulation and irresponsible hunting laws in the US.
      Beavers are a ‘keystone species’ because they create and maintain ecosystems for hundreds of other species. We are foolish to allow the killing of beavers and the destruction of the their habitats.

    • @parryyotter
      @parryyotter Год назад

      I love how you’re correcting the professional scientist. Takes a lot of idiocy since that’s not what she said and she even says in the video AND the description that they have iron in their enamel.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 Год назад

      @@parryyotter 0:49 "they lay down a layer of iron in their enamel, which essentially means they have metal teeth"
      OK, we can take "a layer of iron" as an informal way of saying "a layer of iron-containing minerals". But beavers do not "have metal teeth", just as the calcium-containing minerals in our teeth don't mean that we have metal teeth. There is no metallic iron in the teeth; only iron-based minerals. Minerals are not metals; being made of minerals does not make somethign "metal".
      And, thank you, but I do not need to be lectured about my supposed character flaws by somebody who resorts to insults as soon as they disagree with somebody.

    • @isaacbruner65
      @isaacbruner65 Год назад

      @@beeble2003 mineral and metal are not mutually exclusive terms... The minerals in beaver teeth contain metallic iron compounds. She may have been a little loose with her language but it was clear what she meant.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 Год назад

      @@isaacbruner65 The only metallic minerals are things like gold and silver that occur naturally as an element. What iron compound is metallic? Metals are, roughly speaking, a lattice of positive ions held together by a gas of delocalized electrons; most non-elemental minerals are a lattice of positive and negative ions held together by opposites attracting.
      And I don't think it was clear what she meant in that specific case. People know intuitively what a metal is: it's something like steel. Saying that beavers' teeth are metal makes it sound like they are fundamentally different from other animals' teeth. They're not. They're like stone, just like other animals' teeth. But they're a harder kind of stone because they contain iron compounds. Saying that beaver teeth "contain iron" is a little loose with language; saying that they "are metal" is just wrong.
