A few things to note regarding the controversy: 1. This is the first time a standard gauge steam locomotive has operated in Mexico since 1968 or so, and undoubtedly the first steam excursion in the country during the modern era, so people’s excitement clearly got the better of them. 2. Mexico has never had a dedicated government-sponsored rail safety initiative (like Operation Lifesaver in the U.S. and Canada, or events like Rail Safety Week in the UK), so people in the country likely don’t have as good an understanding of railroad safety as other countries. 3. The Mexican government only began taking action to improve the country’s rail infrastructure within the past year or 2, and their methods have been controversial to say the least. They include seizing rail lines from private companies through the use of armed marines, announcing a controversial tourist operation called Tren Maya, and supposedly “repossessing” several Union Pacific diesel locomotives for their own use. In short, I applaud the CP Steam Team for trying, but it ended up being a swing and a miss.
doesn't matter common sense is in every country way to ruin your chances Mexico. you'll never see a steam engine again because of this the government has nothing to do with this.
It's so sad that modern steam excursion stars have accidents like this. First 844, now 2816. My heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones in both incidents.
I've seen a lot of train videos over the years. I grew up watching Pentrex VHS tapes with my dad in the '90s, visited countless steam operations, hell I commute on the Long Island Railroad daily. When I heard about the final spike tour going to Mexico I figured some crazy stuff was going to happen but I was not expecting to see a video of someone getting killed by a steam engine. Right in front of her little son nonetheless. Very dark stuff.
Is it inappropriate for me to say that Canadian Pacific steam engines keep getting the short end of the stick in preservation? 1286 dented its cowcatcher, 1278’s firebox blew up, 2317 killed two boys and later derailed, but I think what happened here trumps everything else as the worst instance of all.
It's genuinely sad to see stuff like this happening, I don't know what CPKC was even thinking. I'm praying that something like this will never happen again
I agree with you, Jim. Running 2816 down to Mexico was a bad idea. It’s probably for the best that 2816 doesn’t go back down there for the rest of eternity.

Good reasons to give 2816 a permanent, non-negotiable ban from running into Mexico.
The second reason is probably the explanation for the sheer discourse that happened.

There's education on railroad safety, and then there's basic common sense - both lacking here.
It’s actually worth noting that 2816 in the US was very successful
There’s one time when someone tried to sabotage 2816 on the return trip to canada. Luckily, he got caught from the police and now behind in bars.
Kind of a shame people cannot restrain themselves and be cautious around trains, the poor little boy is probably going to have ptsd from this.

not gonna lie this is like when flying scottman went to america. Im glad she went back to canada mexico isnt the place for 2816.
It’s worse enough after minutes of the death recorded and posted, someone already a meme about it, which is horrible
Poor 2816 :(
Honestly, this was a good idea when it started, but once it reached Mexico, it ended up becoming a mistake

May god forgive her

yeah i no bad idea
This went from a great idea in concept to a huge mistake in hindsight; I've never seen such abhorrent behavior from railfans ever in all my life.
It was a bad idea sending 2816 to Mexico from the start
That's what happens when you allow a foamer magnet in town
It was a bad idea in the beginning

You mean doesn't?
