I went the other way. I deleted facebook. Much nicer experience overall.
Same here ... Although just be wary, I sought legal advice about that last year as I deleted my facebook profile more than 8 years ago, One of my older devices I still own, I'd put a new battery in to archive the data on it and it automatically signed in to Facebook.
ALL OF MY data was still there, even after ticking the box to remove all data after confirmation of account closure.
You need to check it's actually been deleted, because they don't always promise that either.

I think this is bigger. Two people go into a restaurant. Both put their phones (1 apple / 1 google phone) on the table without using it throughout the evening. Next day the two people go on the internet, even with other devices and get advertisement that matches their conversation from last evening. True story.

it would be interesting if that could be tested in a more scientific level rather than being only at a level of anecdotal evidence combined with cherry picking of big numbers. Probably the same effect that coincides with it can be obtained more "cheaply" from other digital trail of the individuals plus other coincidences, rather than a more fine-tuned hyper-targeted thing with literal audio-spying, that has probably has a comparably low return on investment, given its higher costs. Maybe if it is also selective in who it is spying, it can reduce its costs, though.
More scientific testing and/or insider whistle-blowing would be interesting, though.

It’s the same story with nearly everything we use online. You suggest deleting one app and replacing it with another that promises a different approach but in the end, the core issue remains. As long as you're connected to the internet, true privacy is elusive. If you genuinely value privacy and want to live organically, the most effective solution might be to disconnect entirely.

Don't want to be a Party Pooper, but surveillance is easy on them too since you need to send SMS, which aren't even encrypted. But I get the idea. There aren't thousand apps tracking every single thing you do on an old phone.

I used another US app and I had used it happily, without issue for over 12 years, all of a sudden I was blocked, no reason given except I had 'violated the conditions' which? they wouldn't tell me, why? I got no reply except my account could be re-activated (even though they said my account was deleted) but, I had to do a video selfie and give a phone number - well, absolutely no way. I keep getting "We miss you emails" they go straight in the junk mail

The only thing people can do if they are "worried" about all of this is to throw away their iPhones, Androids, Google phones, smart watch, tablets, laptops, etc. As long as a person has a phone and interacts with an app, they are already being tracked.
It is possible to minimize the risk. For example, use Signal instead of WhatsApp.
You are being tracked whether you have a device or not. It's called facial recognition and license plate readers, at the very least.

My guess is you are a US IPhone user, where Apple rules the roost. In the rest of the world Apple is a much smaller part of the market. Staying in your velvet prison in the US is easy. Chances are people you communicate with are also using IPhones. Android + IPhones can't text message to each other as easily (That's changing though) and Face Time video is a IPhone exclusive. Whatsapp handles that for everyone. Your "neither is needed" is ignorant and condescending.

How come I've never seen an ad on WhatsApp
Tried leaving WhatsApp years ago but my social circle wouldn't follow. So now the only way I communicate with anyone is WhatsApp. I literally think about it most days.
I did the same yeeeears ago & moved over to Telegram, only 1 friend & 1 family member followed, couldn't care less, still deleted WhatsApp. Years later I see a lot more people from my contacts popping up on Telegram. Unfortunately now that Telegram is so big I no longer like that platform either 😭😂 time to just ditch the phones I think
That was my wife too when she left. Be brave, and try again. You don't have to jump all at once, you can keep a foot in both camps, so have Signal and WhatsCrapp.
Remember to explain to people why you need to leave. Those conversations were much more difficult in the past, but with the dystopic rise of surveillance and poisonous politics at the moment, people really do seem to understand that it's more a little bit important.

I tried multiple times but I finally did it I forced my mum and dad to and that was theaij thing then I sent a message to friends saying I'm deleting WhatsApp. That they can never text me again if they don't switch. And I left it as that and they all came bouncing messages (iMessages, Google messages, U know) I prefer that because its easier for me

This is not surprising at all. If you want to participate in modern life, you are basically forced to deal with the mega corporations, which will harvest your data, if you want or not. Your only way out would be to not participate. Not use a smartphone, and only use the internet in general for as few things as possible. But if you do, there is barely a way around all this. At least not, if you want to keep using those or similar services.

Very important fact. All data encryption on WhatsApp used double keys, which means, the recepient of your message can decode it using key1, another person can open that using key2. Your messages are not safe.
It's worse, by having the contact lists he can map out your entire social circle. Incredibly powerful information that can be used to manipulate, influence and gaslight specific groups of people. Used effectively it has the ability to reshape your opinions, change your beliefs and have you marching to what they want.
They have the ability to slowly reprogram your mind without you even being aware of it. It's like a Manchurian candidate only slightly modified with a far greater reach.

Leaving whatsapp is not so easy in Europe, everyone uses it here. My entire family is on it, all my friends and colleagues. I have had jobs where joining the whatsapp group is mandatory. Leaving whatsapp here just means isolating yourself.

Had the same problem and had to keep it or isolate myself, this is unfortunately what we have turned the world in to.

What's the point, everything else we use in life is also designed for surveillance and control, you can't escape it without getting rid of EVERYTHING.

i instaleled signal on my parents' phone in 2014 and they hate that i am their only contact on there ha ha ha. but they use whatsapp for everyone else.

Unfortunately, my daughter is a deep user on WhatsApp and won't move to Signal.. There's a massive part of me unhappy in modern society.

Oh and don't stop there. Truth social is by far the worst of them all. It is a pigsty, all respect for pigs. Get of your phone and all other screens. Start using them like you would a landline phone. That's the way to true freedom and life. Without social media, your social life will flourish.
Some countries intentionally block competing apps, and ISPs will push you into using just one or two, usually with WhatsApp at the top of the list.
In south Africa Businesses even education departments relies heavily on WhatsApp. To delete what's app you would be isolating yourself no one uses signal here
At the end of the day ! This guy is destroying humanity ! Killing our children and destroying homes ! And not holding accountability for this !
