  • A vacuum cleaner. A urinal. Three basketballs floating in water? In 1993, Morley Safer took a critical look at the contemporary art world, where household items like these are sold as high-priced art. In this much talked about piece, Safer skewered the artists, dealers and critics of the 90s with gusto.

There there were a few light bulbs hanging from the ceiling and a mattress talked in a corner which was his bed. He then turned on another switch and behold before me for several Hoover vacuums enclosed in plastic see through displays and Jeff probably said this is an example of some of my artwork. I said Jeff amazing because I do need a vacuum cleaner for my apartment and I think that everything is going to be closed so can I buy one of yours. He smiled and said I would love to give you one but these are much more expensive than you would pay for in a store. I asked him how much? He smiled and said this one is $7,000 and the one next to it is $8,500 and the third one is

He told me he had so many ideas of what he would be creating in the future and that he would be leaving the commodities world as soon as he would have success with his creations. When I left the loft I was sold, I knew that Jeff was passionate about his work and that it was just a question of when he would be successful because his talent and his voice and the words behind them belonged to a true artist and the next morning I rushed to the hardware store and bought a Hoover vacuum but it was not in case in plastic it was given to me in a box which one I brought it back to the apartment I gave to my cleaning person and she was able to do the work. When Jeff left his position I missed his demeanor and
the inspiration that he espoused with his gentle but inspirational voice and when I left his loft that night I thanked him and said to myself I think I might have been one of the first people who got to see his creations in his studio loft and I knew that with the talents he just played at work every day that they could and would result in him achieving his goals of being recognized for his creations. I remember sitting in the balcony at 54 and next to me was Andy Warhol who would sit and observe sometimes of a long periods and nobody bothered him but everybody knew that he was a very successful or genius. He sadly died from a misdiagnosed virus in his heart in San Francisco and it wasn't that much later that Jeff Koons made a major mark in the art world. He married the first woman elected to the Italian parliament, they had a kid and a very stormy marriage. However, Jeff would overcome it and he became the darling of the art world and his creations which in his words were symbols that were part of our everyday lives and encasing them was one way to display and share their purpose with whoever viewed them. I know that there are many that question his greatness but that did never stop Jeff from continuing to create and become acknowledged as one of the great artists of our time. I admire Jeff and proudly remember when he gave me a special viewing and it's something that I will never forget and I wish Jeff continue his pathway to greatness!

At least, more so than the rustic interviewer conducting this clip.

I worked with Jeff koons when he was a commodities broker in the world trade center. He was a phenomenal broker who's elegant words were warm and sincere and
Who's talent was unquestionably the best that I had ever heard. I remember he had one client that he had an amazing relationship with, a gentleman who was elderly but as much a friend of Jeff's as a client. Sometimes the conversation would be about shoveling snow and Jeff sincerely spoke to his client to be careful and not to over exert himself and then told him that he thought that cotton would be a good acquisition because of indications in the market that it was about to have a significant upturn. Floyd, the client bought the position and every day Jeff would speak with him and tell him exactly what was happening and

There's nothing to understand lady, that's why most people are correct in their assessment that they dont understand it, and if all art is purely 'subjective' then the person who thinks its a piece of dog shit is just as correct as the person who thinks it is the greatest piece of art ever made, they are both correct. THAT is the beauty of no objective standards in art and THAT is how one can use the 'pull the wool over the eyes, BS tactics' like the vacuum guy. Insanity.

He studied art in college, studied with Ed Paschke, moved to NYC in his 20s and tried to get his first works off the ground. He did do commodities for a short time to fund his art projects. But Morley was rephrasing the narrative with that limited description of his past.

Anybody seems to undestand why that kind of modern art is bad. It's bad because it sais the same thing over and over again. It's not that it sais nothing. A blanck canvas is questioning our value system and asking: why do you like that and not this? It's saying that our taste doesnt mean anything greater, that there is no common sense and that whatever we do is worthless because it's attached with mortality. The problem with that is that it has been said so many times it's not at all groundbreaking, and francly it wasn't even profound at the time but that doesnt mean it's not art, it means it's bad art because it did have a meaning, an overtly simplistic and beaten up meaning, but meaning. The price goes separate, why would you care if someone pays a lot of money for a vaccum cleaner? why do you care? Oh poor lil rich guy payed more money than I do for the same thing! It's not like they force you buy it.

    • @adriansuchomusic

And honestly the same happens with millions of paintings of landscapes. You tell me what meaning you see in a sunset! It depends on who are you are asking some might even say it has non. Does that mean it has no meaning at all casue some people say it doesn't? Or are landscapes good because there is technique involved? The technique doesn't make it profound or meaningful. Is selling not clearly deep art morally wrong? Who are you to say so? Does the technique make it beautiful? Is a perfect hand-drawn circle beautiful? it requires technique.

It commemorates the death of Mr. Gonzalez-Torres's partner, Ross, from AIDS. As each viewer takes a piece of candy they are asked to reflect on the value of Ross's life & their complacency in the AIDS crisis. It's really a moving piece. This absolutely should not be in the same category as Koons's bullshitted hype man faked kitsch. Even though it is all modern art, a viewer is capable of thinking, absorbing and deciding what is good outside of the hype. Don't let Koons poison your brain!

It’s art but is it worth that much? I think not!

Let me save you 12 minutes. It's only art if Fortune 500 companies compete to buy it for millions of dollars. Everything else overpriced bathroom tissue.

R all these ppl in the comment n the host rele that dumb? R ppl seriously struggling to understand what ABSTRACT means? Do ppl rele not understand how value is precieved?? A value of an object does NOT derive from its utility nor complexity nor innovation. A value of an object is derived from its collective precieved value that a group of people is willing to put on it. If I throw up on a piece of paper and put that paper in a museum, I am making a statement that I dare to be different. If others want to join in on the statement they too put their money on it. The thing then gets value. Its that simple u don't need 2 hour documentary to explain how art works jeeeeez

I Love modern art but to hear that he commissions craftsmen to create his pieces is fucking stupid, art should be by the artist or at least transformed by the artist. By claiming that he made art by taking it from another craftsman is like wives calling a handmaids baby theirs in the Handmaids tale, fucking ridiculous.

So you wouldnt consider michelangelos paintings as art? because he had assistants too. I wouldnt limitate art to the personal skill of the artist or the effort it took to get it done.

If you were able to show a Vermeer to a bunch of cavemen, they would probably laugh at it, stone it, pee on it, or perhaps eat it (and then beat you up). But they would definitely not "understand" it. They wouldn't have to, also, because it would be way ahead of their actual cultural/intellectual reach. Same happens to this: the reporter, who seems to be highly defensive and somehow petulant, is just not initiated in the language of contemporary art. No one is guilty about that: not him, not the artists, not the art system. Although perhaps a higher emphasis on art education is needed in the world, yes.
