Originally recorded with Bobby Orlando in 1983, a new version of the song was recorded in 1985 and released as PSB’s first Parlophone single. Producer Stephen Hague remixed it with additional production and it finally became an hit in 1986.
This track is included in SMASH - The Singles 1985 - 2020. The complete collection of Pet Shop Boys singles in chronological order. “SMASH" will be released on Parlophone on June 16th in a variety of formats including 3CD box set, 6LP vinyl box set and digitally, as well as two special limited edition formats available exclusively via the Pet Shop Boys store - 6LP white vinyl box set and 3-cassette box set. A 3CD/2Blu-ray edition will also be released which includes the complete video collection of the singles plus extras.

...this was the 're-do' Music Video, that was done for the USA audiences; certain stations had a problem with Neil 'disintegrating' at the end of the UK version, So, a cheery, 'glossy' version was done, with some hi-tech tricks (for the time)....a fun watch....peaked at #10 Pop / #3 Dance, July 1986.....

I love this song, great melody, deep meaning. The music video is one of the best I've ever seen. No idea how you could do that back in the day😅 my fav part is when Neil pours red paint in Chris' Helmet, but Chris gets revenge with the dynamite in Neils hat. Hilarious.

He was honored in 1983 for the film "Tango" with the American Film Academy Award - the Oscar in the category of Best Animated Short Film, awarded for 1982. It was, worth noting, the first Oscar for a Pole and a Polish film production. An interesting fact is that the dvd POP ART publishing house incorrectly stated that the director was another famous Pole, Zbigniew... Brzeziński. In fact, in the years 1977-1981, he was a security adviser to US President Jimmy Carter.

Along with Oliver Stone's "Wall Street", probably nothing comes closer than this song to capturing the whole "greed is good" zeitgeist of the mid-1980s.
Was this inspiration for New Order's True Faith, would be interesting to find out - could be as songs give some similar vibes. However, these bands interacted and collaborated later, so they were influencing each others, despite PSB being later act. Just timeless and always as fresh as the first day.
