Found out Anno 1800 actually added a first person camera, allowing you to walk the streets of your city. Not just the low to the ground postcard mode, actual first person, footsteps included lol.

Thanks for the informative review. For most of it I'm thinking "This is just a rehashed Anno 1404, except prettier". And I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER. I love that game so much and did not care for the futuristic water one. Then you delve into some cool new feature, so it's not just rehashed. It's like 1404 plus more, which makes me happy. I guess it's 396 more to be exact! Looks lovely and I will buy it off the back of this review, which has restored my faith that they're back to their winning ways.

I'm really happy to see that they added sandbox mode back into the game. It looks like they've added a lot of fun mechanics as well which I hope will help keep the game interesting. As with all Anno games, it looks gorgeous but I was really hoping they'd add a better snapping/grid system (think Cities Skylines style) to give you more creativity in road and building/city layout. Another thing is combat, it's never been the strong point but even a simple ground based combat even as an option would be a great addition but I understand that has never really been a big selling point of their games. Also, mod support, even in a basic fashion would inject so much replay-ability and longevity into the game. Great review as always PE, much appreciated.

1701 was my first experience with this series and I've always liked it since (except 2205, which could have been good but tried to change too much imo). It's such a unique game, half city builder, half factory game with the production chains.
EDIT: Also Party, 1701 and 2070 (not sure about 2205) had the same Warehouse system where all Warehouses essentially provide "access" to every item in Warehouse storage, no matter which Warehouse the items were physically moved to.

A few games surpass being "just a game" and make their way into some kind of art form, and Anno is one of them. It's like the difference between a paperback novel and that 300 year old first edition leather bound book that's worth more than your car. The Anno franchise is an amazing thing, and Anno 1800 is doubtless the crowning achievement of them all. It is rare for a sequel - much less a 7th Iteration - to surpass its predecessors, but years later, this game takes me to a different place and time, and that's amazing.

The product teleportation between warehouses isn't a new feature. Thats a basic mechanic tha was always present in the series. Wahats new is the fact that all warehouses need to be connected to the port, the fact that buildable area isn't restricted by an "influence area" and the whole mechanics about workforce. If you want to see how old Anno's work will still enjoying a great game, try Anno 1404, its considered the best in the series (at least it was prior to this release), its graphics have aged surprisingly well and its music is even better.
I missed some information in the review regarding to more advanced tier mechanics. For example, when you say its necessary to "start over" for every island, it would be nice if you mentioned that tier 4 onwards, its possible to build special ports that allow to share workforce between island, so you can have one large residential island supplied by production only islands. Another thing I think should be mentioned is that its possible to configure the campaign and sanbox to play without competitors. This is a feature present in the saga since Anno 1701 and I think its important to know as some of us do prefer to play the city/producion building part without worrying about combat nor territorial grabbing.

Oh no, I hope the yapping from characters isn't more than in 1404, where it's... fine, but can get a bit much when they automatically trade with you and things like that. - Also, the way you described the newspaper-bit reminds me of the mini-quests you get from the AI-player, when you have to deliver goods, or find some people and bring them to the characters, and those also become repetitive and indeed start to feel like chores after a while. - I think those can be ignored, though, without any negative side-effects other than not gaining rewards. But I'm not sure about ignoring the newspapers and if you even can. - I haven't played 1800 yet. - I've been playing 1404 for the first time (in April 2023) and I did purchase the Complete Edition of 1800 at a discount because of it (although I was interested in the latter first). But it sounds good, especially with all the extra content that came out over the last 4 years.

Anno series on the whole is a very solid franchise monetarily that has been iterated on over the decades with tweaks and additions to its core mechanics, it's generally quite pretty graphically and the music is always 10/10 in my view.
However my personal view regarding it's longevity is that it's time to wrap up the Anno line as it is just more of the same now after 7 titles. As someone who has played each Anno since 1602, they quickly become stale as the game play loop is for the most part a copy and paste exercise that doesn't bring much innovation to them after decades of design to then only attach a few bells and whistles for the player to keep their attention.
Add to that each title requiring an almost triple A cost of purchase at launch for what is essentially the same game, same play style just a different time period (unless you wait a few years for it to get to bargain basement pricing), I'll be doing my usual and playing older yet similar Anno titles when the urge takes me till this one gets to sell at around £10-£15 and leave those with money to burn to buy it at it's ridiculous £50 price tag.

Second: I wouldn't call Anno a city builder. I would put it into two genres: In German we call the first one: Aufbaustrategie= Construction strategy?/ compisiton strategy?(strategy is ment in a military way as far as I know) The second one is economy simulation.
Third: Anno is about being the most efficient you can be and trains you to be a perfectionist. Also the warehouse system is very very old and I am really happy they returned to it.

    • @gralfighter

well it is an anno after all, however there is a ton of new additions. Electricity and train tracks (not shown in the review) add a lot of complexity to the game, in how to place your production, how to build your city etc, it certainly made me rework my city when i first got to it.
instead of simply upgrading your houses you need to make sure that you have enough of the working class below to produce all the requiered items.
influence also plays a big strategic role. In the review it was badly shown, however these newspapers can have major impact on your production chains or war power, and the more you modify them the more they cost influence, you however also need influence to build ships and to expand. If you are in the middle of a war and then get a -15% production and 15% increased product needs and dont have the influence to change that, that has a really high impact.
the maps are bigger, since the far away land are on a completely other map rather than being on the same which is great however that enormously increases the amount of goods you need to send in order to fulfill the needs.
All in all, this is an anno game, but it is the best anno in almost every aspect. The ambience is right, the productions are much more complex ( there is now a 5th level of citizens and there needs are truly hard to fulfill). I found it was also much harder compared to the other anno games (which tbf isnt a high bar to pass):

so..... the game mechanics are for the most part, especially concerning the core mechanics, nearly identical to the last 3 installments of the anno series. I wonder if you have ever played any of them before? You mentioned that 1800 is the first one that you got to immerse yourself into, does that mean that it actually is the first one you played, or have they just not worked for you, immersion-wise? Because I find that quite strange. The whole concept was basically the same, and from 1404 on, as I said, the core gameplay has changed little to none. Also... yes, warehouses have always been sharing goods across an island. Since 1602 already...
That all said, i like your review, although it doesn't sound as if you've played any of the installments before this.

I don't wanna be negative. But as someone who played allot of the anno games. You seem to not have played any of the first 5 games i would say based on your comment on how resources are shared on all markets. Next to that all the gameplay i see is from the same save. Can you even call this a review? it feels more like a first impression of playing a scenario.
As much as i enjoy listening to someone praising a game. The whole point of a review is to play a game allot, till the point you can turn it inside out for people. Maybe for someone who never played an anno game this review is a nice salespitch. But for someone who has played allot of the anno games like myself. This review is useless. it does not give any insight to weather the AI is any good, If the combat is balanced, If the economy is fun to play with, If the world its scope is big enough to build crazy cities, If the mechanics allow you more or less freedom in creative expression then other parts of the anno series. How do i know from this review if this game is any better or worse then the previous games ? Because if it is a worse version of something that already exists then why would i wanna buy this?
The game is not even out yet and people are writing "reviews" of a demo version of the game. Just so they can get to the review party first. But can you call it a review if you have not played the entire game.. which in the case of anno would take probably weeks of playing trough all the different settings, comparing all island templates, thoroughly test all the game mechanics and push the AI to its knies to see how good it is.
