In this Broadcast Award-winning, BAFTA and Emmy Award-nominated entertainment show, Taskmaster tyrant Greg Davies (Man Down, Cuckoo), with the help of his loyal assistant Alex Horne (The Horne Section and the show’s creator), sets out to test the wiles, wit and wisdom of five hyper-competitive comedians.
Comedians that have risked life, limb, and dignity in the hope of making the Taskmaster proud so far include: Frank Skinner (The Frank Skinner Show), Mel Giedroyc (The Great British Bake Off), Romesh Ranganathan (Asian Provocateur), Hugh Dennis (Outnumbered), Sally Phillips (Bridget Jones’ Diary), Rose Matafeo (Edinburgh Comedy Award Winner 2018), and Russell Howard (The Russell Howard Hour). Unaware of what awaits them in each wax-sealed envelope, only one competitor can become the victorious owner of His Royal Task-ness’ golden head and be crowned the next Taskmaster Champion.
Alex engaging with Nell in exactly the same way he engages with contestants is the highlight of the entire show for me
I argue that he treats contestants the way he treats toddlers...
"ah yes, the ecosystem is deteriorating"
False, never seen Alex give a little puppet show for a contestant 😔
For real though Alex was so funny interacting with a toddler
@@DeathnoteBB Hopefully many more series to go.
“Shall I go?”
In one task Nell said hello to Alex more times than James Acaster did in an entire series
Once?
@@atallguynh none
@@ليليدون how can none be more than none though? 🙂
@@atallguynh Obviously they were referring to James Acaster who said hello 0 times, because nell said hello several times in the task
@@imperatacylindrica8993 Yes, of course. My point was that Nell could have said it just once and that still would be enough to be more than James for the entire series.
Paul to Iain "Not all of us are as dysfunctionally competitive as you mate"
Probably the most potent and true of insults between contestants
Paul won me forever with that comment. I increasingly can't stand Iain because he is never not bitching when he doesn't win a task. I don't care if it's his schtick, it's annoying.
@@rockyoumonkeys I honestly think you can watch Iain actively become a better person over the course of the series. You can tell he's embarrassed by how he behaved during the team tasks. But yeah, at this point in the series, absolute tosser. (Did I use that right? I'm American. So I'll just go ahead and believe I used it right, even if ever faced with an abundance of evidence to the contrary.)
I don't think I've ever enjoyed watching someone getting the piss taken out of them more.
@@lashier13 I think he openly talks about it making him uncomfortable to watch himself acting that way. He (hopefully) has the second most personal growth over the series (after Angella Dravid of NZ Taskmaster), in my opinion. Not leaps and bounds, but you can definitely see a change between the start and the end.
I'd be fine with Iain being a whiny child if he was also funny.
"Bicycle My Xcellentbicycle" is right up there with "Bastard's cryin' innit" and "There's strength in arches" in the canon of this show.
Without moving the fishbowls...
“bosh”
“There was no box, mate.”
Don't forget "Friendship is truth."
Not in the same vein but... Bamboo time
"Not everyone is as dysfunctionaly competitive as you Iain."
Probably one of the most eloquent burns I've ever heard.
Love Joe Thomas and his work, but he didn't seem to enjoy himself at all in the episode. What was wrong?
@@steffenbretzke7111 He never seems to enjoy himself, but I think he does. He's just very quiet :)
@@steffenbretzke7111 Joe's just constantly awkward, that's his normal self.
Greg Davies, Jessica Knappet and Joe Thomas were all in The Inbetweeners and their characters in that show are very similar to their real life personas. In fact the same goes for just about anyone in The Inbetweeners so I think the cast was picked for their comedy style. So yeah, Joe Thomas is really just Simon in real life, but quicker witted.
Yeah Ian seemed very much like a man child.
Making something for a toddler seemed to be the only moment that didn't infuse pure confusion into Joe.
Which is adorable
I thought for sure Nell would be upset when she spilled the water from the duck tray on herself but she does seem like a very happy child.
She scurried away from the soapy floor right quick. But yes, she rebounded just as quick.
@@lnfreeman she might have expected the adults present to make a fuss about it and so when they didn't care that much she just went about her day lol
Yeah I think Alex handled that like a champ honestly. Didn't make a fuss, echoed her concerns and then asked if she wanted to put them back, which was an excellent and tactile suggestion bound to appeal to a kid her age. Not that I suspect he put quite that much thought into it, but it worked really well.
@@somethingelse9176 The last thing he is going to do is scold her and make her upset.
that depends much on how the adult in the room responds. Alex didn't give a hoot and just pointed on how the eco system was ruined. then presented her with a task ;)
I suppose her parents are relaxed too (though she did say it got 'messy' and distanced herself from said mess).
"I've often seen you during this series look like there's nothing to live for."
I'm so happy he picked up on that just as well as we all did.
hey, that's the look I'm going for as well!
Joe is adorable.
He's the contestant I think I can relate to the most
I ♥️ Joe!!

Nell was an excellent Engagement Tester. So adorable.
Whenever Greg calls out Joe’s name, the look of subtle confusion in his face like “what does he need ME for?” Is just hilarious.

It paid off, all right; it wa a Great Taskmaster Moment.
My mind went to Joe Wilkinson's potato toss, minus the heartbreaking disqualification.

@@Butterratbeeis that you Iain??
Watching a toddler run into a room, say “Hi Alex” and play with the contestants toys was the most wholesome thing ever on this show, but then it was immediately followed up with Lou goading the child into smacking a duck in the head with a hammer, which was incredibly disturbing
And then the child hugged the duck at the end and I didn’t know how to feel at all

she juuuuust nudges Rosalind The Fucking Nightmare and Swedish Guy into second and third place spots. Stiff competition, love it
@@finmiles965 I saw these comments before I knew who Nell was and I felt slightly defensive about Rosalind but once I saw Nell I knew she had to be the best guest.
True. The Mayor of Chesham wasn't bad either :-P.
When she ran back and forth when They showed Joe’s Dough it was so adorable!! We need Nell back!! 😂🥺
I think I could watch Nell and Alex interact for eight episodes straight.
I think Sian and Joe might be one of my favorite all-time teams on this show. There's just something about her we got this attitude clashing with his I wish I could just die right now demeanor that melds so perfectly together. I immediately root for them everytime a team task arises.
This is where Iain starts to learn if you get too competitive Greg is bound to fuck with you, "just to put petrol on the fire, I'm gonna put both in last!"
Poor Ian he put So much thought into the prize task 🤣
@@MS-ic3rd His heart also grew three sizes this day.
I think Greg Davies was an excellent choice for the role of Taskmaster because he dgaf.
Greg is great at being Taskmasker. On one hand he listens and changes his mind when good points are made but on the other hand when someone is actively making the show less enjoyable by being petulant and overlycompetitive, he will openly admit to bias against them so they do it less in the future.
Not a good way to run a government, but perfect for a show that's supposed to be funny more than competitive, where the prize doesn't really matter and the real victory for contestants is probably good PR.
@@danceswithdirt7197 his background as a teacher helps a lot. The way he took James to the side last season was also epic.
Basically this is still just a teacher, rating performances. Only now there is no scienctific goal, or placement in a social-economic environment - you just compete to win Greg's favor ;)
He likes competitive people, but he also likes to frustrate people at times. Competitive people are very easy to mess with, since winning means so much to them. Greg punishes big egos - like a good teacher should.
I'm gunna out myself and admit that the way Iain is aggressively competitive and lowkey starts crying when he reflects on that behaviour or when he's angry is SO relatable.
agree, like as hard as that hammock task was to watch, ians reaction to his behaviour redeems him to me quite a bit
the fact that he apologised to lou during the show says something
as someone with adhd who can be impulsive and irritable and sometimes act out of character when i get emotional, i get it
that dosent make excuses for the behavior but i dont think hes the antichrist like everyone paints him out to be
@@RoLaarr yeah, i agree. He was a bit of a dick in some moments, but I can see how he could get so riled up. I'm a crazy competitive person and can get a bit too heated and have said and done things I regret. His personal growth and recognition of his bad behavior makes me forgive him. Im glad he was a big enough to apologize.
Watching him made me so mad, but mostly because I can be like that too, and no one wants to see their worst traits on TV.
@@RoLaarr He didn't apologize to Lou though, he just stated that it upset him to see how he treated her. Go ahead and watch the video, there was no "I'm sorry" or "I apologize" out of his mouth. That's not an apology.

On toddlers:
-Q: "Do they want a pretty princess with freckles, dancing, or do they want the existential terror of a shark attack?"
-A: yes
I work at a daycare, and honestly I talk with the toddlers the same way Alex talks to Nell. They’re surprisingly into it.
This resonates with me. I don’t “like kids” (depends on the kid) but they seem to like me as I talk to them like people.

That's not necessarily *sneakily* weighing them. In your option it would still be blatantly obvious to them, it would just be a task. A sneaky weigh would be putting a scale under a doormat or something (and tare it) and then give them the task of standing on said object.

Nah, Paul's the Barrel Dad in my eyes, Lou and Iain the bickering siblings!
I genuinely think the toddler task is one of if not the best tasks I've seen on this show so far.
Obviously Nell was going to love Paul‘s toy. I‘ve never met a toddler, including myself, who could resist water. Not sure what Greg found so surprising about that.
For Iain’s the puppet, toddlers also love trash! No idea why, but they do

Five points go to Alex for keeping the toddler fully engaged.
Iain is experiencing a severe process of ego death after watching that team task 😂😂 You can literally see his entire life is flashing before his eyes for the rest of the episode....incredible.
tbh i have the same feeling watching any video of myself
The best part is Lou was 100% correct, if just 2 of them had gotten in the hammock they would have had the best possible chance, it was simple and the most effective possible strategy and Iain just completely ignored her
According to Wikipedia, after the death of ego comes absolute freedom. So he’s got that going for him.
@@kazikian It's nice he gets the chance to develop an alter ego. Not many people dare to watch themselves in the mirror - I suppose Ian never did so before and now he had to. He's still not my cup of tea, but he had an arch during the season. Crappy dude humbled.
@@crispindry2815 Exactly, it pissed me off so much. Especially since Lou's plan made the most sense and would be most effective, but because she's a female, she can't be right. I liked Iain up to this point, but that task was really frustrating. There aren't many comments about it here, but on the video of the individual task, many people pointed out Iain's rubbish behaviour.
Nell nailed the timing on the "hit the ducky" song
I feel bad Alex inadvertently cut the engagement short! Poor Nell deserved those sweets!

That toddler is so well spoken and adooooorable, oh my god. By far the cutest task of all time! And Paul doing all this with one arm really makes it all the more impressive that he manages to do okay considering. I really like this series so far.
Watching Iain get teary eyed over how he was acting in the group task broke my heart. I think he learned something about himself
Judging by how his behavior dramtically shifts over the rest of the series, especially in studio, I would say he was able to make some positive and permanent life changes.
What a legend.
I watched the team challenge and thought 'I genuinely dislike this man' but the post-task breakdown was very positive to see
Iain was the first to help Paul in the sleeping bag live task. So he really seems like a kind person who wants to help but has finally realized how toxicly competitive he can also be and he felt regret very deeply. Because he's probably a really good guy! It was cool to see.
Lou was just as obnoxious as him, made me cringe at how much I probably used to be like that
@@just-tess Honestly Lou was just as grating as Iain, but Iain reflected and mellowed out whereas Lou just remained hyper competitive and annoying.

Paul Sinha said it best when he said Iain was,” dysfunctionally competitive “.
Honestly this made me realise how polite english people are. This did not seem that rude to me. He was frustrated and he did let it out on the others, but that was nothing that bad. I would have ignored him and done my thing. I am from one of the bilingual regions of Switzerland though, we suffer from french rudness mixed with german honesty here.
Yes looking back this was an honest but harsh comment and I regret it a bit (which is why I've come back to this video only to realise it's now received replies).
Overall I think Greg always makes his difficult job look easy.
@@trekadouble757 Honestly same. I'm from Germany and I didn't think he was being that bad. Seeing the comments I expected much worse 😂
30:07 So much respect for Lou keeping her composure. Not many people would have been able to sacrifice themselve for their team that way.
I am fascinated honestly by the difference in mentality. I am from Switzerland, one of the bilingual german-french regions and a rural area. I live in a city but it is a very small city and it is the "capital" of the region. We are quite honest, direct and a bit rough in the way we talk. The way he behaved was not nice but he didn't tell any insult so this would have not been a big deal at all here. When we have to play with someone who behaves like that, what we do is ignore that person and do our thing until that person calms down. And if that person's behaviour is preventing us from winning, no big deal, we loose and that teaches that person a lesson. The way we see it here, there are situations where it's not worth losing energy with someone else's shit, so if nothing important is at stake just let it flow. It's also usual to put people in their place by using dry humour and irony, that can work on some people. My family on my mother's side is particularly good at this. It is often impossible to know if my mom is being serious or not because she is able to speak with irony for several minutes while keeping a straight face and using a perfectly normal tone.
She was literally the only one not keeping her composure and freaking out from the beginning, and also caused them to lose in the end, and basically was dishonest instead of coming clean about dropping the book which she carelessly threw in after being the only one to really panic. Instead she projected and said she didn't want anyone to panic.
@@rewardilicious Exactly! Though I do respect that she's apologized at one point during the task.
@@rewardilicious from where im sitting she wanted them to make a game plan instead of running around like headless chickens. and the constant passive aggressive comments iaian threw at her was certainly not helpful

34:40 You can see Ian Sterling trying his best to not erupt as he was already embarrassed by his behavior in that same task few minutes ago. I think this is the moment he becomes calmer and less reactive instead of being an absolute twat, like he was in the previous episodes. Good for him.
I think what we've learnt from this episode is that Alex could easily do a CBBC or CBeebies version of Taskmaster where he's getting bossed around by a small child.
Nell is sincerely one of the most sane and mature people to yet appear on the show.
So clearly, at some time during the production of this series, Alex or a senior member of the production team recieved a phone call from a relative saying "I'm going to be out of the country in a few weeks, could you please look after my daughter".
I thought she was Alex’s daughter cuz she says “bye daddy”?

I found the interaction between Iain and Lou a hard watch first time around. For anyone wondering, Iain and Lou are still friends in real life, and they don't hold that task or each other behaviour against each other and Iain did genuinely feel really bad about it.

I grew up watching The Daily Show, where comedians were often sent into potentially dangerous places or faced off against hostile interviewees. It literally never occurred to me until watching this series just how much comedic talent it actually takes to be able to read a situation and decide whether you can keep pushing or if you need to diffuse tension to avoid making a problem worse.
Are you referring to the Daily Show with Jon Stewart..?
I can't recall a single occasion when any comedian on that show was sent into a potentially dangerous situation.
@@ao1778 It doesn't happen often, but Jordan Klepper was at the Capitol on January 6th. Stephen Colbert has told the story a few times about the time he (while he was still at the Daily Show) and his crew had to run from the Klan.

The biggest laughs I get in any episode are always Alex being a weirdo
Agreed
I still laugh thibking about last season in the prize task of best things starting with G. When Alex says that his his favourite is Greg's special spot hahah.

i feel like this series really nailed the casting in that they're almost perfectly embodying a family of sorts? paul and sian as bumbling but sweet mum and dad, joe as awkward older brother, lou and iain as competitive rowdy twins
Considering I began series 8 sympathizing with and rooting for Iain Stirling, in this episode it’s amazing how quickly he persuaded me, between 28:45 and 30:49, into instead wanting to physically assault him.
Tbh I've been there - acting overly competitive, being ashamed for my behaviour and getting over it. Although I was 16 at that time, but better late than never, right!

Props to Lou for apologizing during the task and Iain afterwards. He looked genuinely put off by his own behaviour and was really humble about it.
The hammock task was maybe the most stressful thing I've ever watched. The passive aggressive arguing was a lot.
What I've learned from this episode is that I would absolutely listen to Greg Davies and Alex Horne co-host/announce for the Olympics.
At the 2032 olympics there will be a whole generation of pan hoopers who point back to this moment in time as the reason they got into this most beautiful sport.
I've seen it before and Nell again makes me smile in the happiest way possible. She is beyond adorable.
Iain immediately apologizing to Lou after seeing the group task clip warmed my heart a lot
Paul with the perfect "Indian Uncle" shirt
Joe’s in good form this episode. Everything he says cracks me up.
"You want to stay here forever with the ducks and the threshing shark?
Shall I go?"
"yeah..."
You've never too young to disrespect Alex Horne
12:22 Alex looks like a supportive, but concerned farther. Especially when he lifts Sian off the barrel
Just love watching and hearing a Alex laugh. He’s my favourite part of the show. The awkward, sincere, straight, self-effacing humour is so up my alley. And I’m enchanted by the gap-toothed smile especially when it’s unexpected.
Joe’s little smile at making his shot through the toilet seat
Thank you for putting these on RUclips for us Americans. Hated the American attempt because it could never do this justice. Also Greg is my dream man.
Yeah, the American version didn’t really have the magic chemistry imho
….I was so much happier before I learned that there was a US version.
28:22 Sian: "Shall we discuss it before we say 'Your time starts now'?"
Alex: "Oh, you've just say 'Your time starts now'."
I was so, SO relieved when the toddler ended up being an actual child and not just Alex in a diaper…
That groan from Alex 😂😂😂
I found it funnier with the fact that he wasn’t on screen for it making it seem unplanned
@@Orangecatinahoodie Greg's slightly disturbed shock is what really sells it hahah
I think I missed it, what’s the time stamp?

Feel like someone should make a notification sound out of it. hahaha
I love Joe Thomas way too much, such an awkward but deadpan and sincere dude
When you want a toddler to be engaged, give them water and floaty things. Works everytime. But you need to watch for the mess.
Point indeed proven, will remember for when the time comes!!
I prefer a trash puppet with bubble wrap
Loving the 'tosser in a bathrobe-pjs' looks more and more as the series go by
That little girl is the best thing in this show yet. She is so sweet! :)
“It’s where you go to different pubs and drink until… you are sad!”
What an uncomfortably real description of every pub crawl I’ve been on.
I think he was looking for a polite way of not saying "until you throw up", but you also have a point.
Honestly, my favorite part is Alex's clinical engagement with Nell.
The tub fit perfectly and actually would have helped stabilize the hammock. At 29:06 Iain pushes down lightly on it with his hands and that alone forced the hammock to sink below the rim. If they plopped a barrel or anything of significant weight on it that wouldn't fit in the tub, it would have created a pouch for them to fill that wouldn't flip over.
That said Lou was totally right to tell him to slow the fuck down and think for a minute, cause that was madness.
