Old Capacitor in the audio circuit would be my first guess. Check mic wiring first.

I picked up a box at a yard sale for 20 bucks it has 3 mobile roadtalker 40s and the roadtalker 40 basestation as well.. do you think these would make a good set up for someone trying to get into cb without spending much cash? I want to set up radios in our tractors and trucks on the farm since cell service is hit or miss. The base station is pretty neat looking and feels pretty heavy! and It would be great having a base station in the barn! ........Anyways I have a few questions..... What kind of antenna + mount would you run on a pickup truck/tractors for one of these mobile roadtalkers? Any suggestions for a base antenna? and do you think Any amplifiers will be necessary? ...... any help or tips would be appreciated LOL I know just enough 2 be DANGEROUS!

Wow , awesome find . Yes the road talker 40 is a great radio for Moble or base applications . The best antenna for Moble is Wilson or tram magnet mounted the longer the whip the better, solercon A99 102 inch vertical or the tram big stick are standard for base stations. hope this helps , any questions are always welcome. Thanks for watching. 73s 406 caveman.

the A99 is simply a vertical dipole. Will work decent, but there are much better choices. @@mancavestudiosnc We can build a vertical dipole for about $10 these days.
