In his infinite wisdom he said “”pin it with balls” I remember that day on my KX80, I took that advice, needless to say I shot to the moon, and landed in the sticks 20-30 yards from the track. Lmao. Hey Ronnie, hope you see this! One thing I struggled with was the bike "bucking" a lot. For those of you that don't know, that's when the rear end bucks up and you nose dive into the landing. Finally one day at a track one of the guys who had been ripping it all day rode up to me and said "Dude, you're jumping in too low of a gear. You need to up shift and lower those RPMs before you jump". To this day that has been the best advice I have ever gotten. I was on a YZ250F and took most of my jumps in high second gear. Once I started shifting into 3rd before hitting the face of the jump and gassing it all the way through I never bucked again. Something else you can do to more safely do jumps is jump with a friend. What I mean by that is if you have a riding buddy or even someone on the track you see that has been taking all the jumps very easily, ask them for help. The riding community is extremely friendly, and almost everyone would gladly do a speed check with you. Just follow them through the jump, gauge your speed so you know you'll make the jump and most importantly follow through. The most dangerous thing you can do is slam on the breaks at the last second before you take a jump. Commit or don't try it at all!
I'm just getting back on the dirt after a 35 year break of only street riding (ZX-14R) and these are great tips for both a beginner and for someone who used to take these things for granted but hasn't for a loooong time. Great vid. (54 on a YZ250)

Love that there is good FREE training available for riders nowadays. Nothing wrong with paying for training either. Just so many weekend warriors, and even aspiring racers simply can't afford a two or three day training course with an instructor. This is absolutely crucial to grow the sport. To help lessen the danger to everyone, when there's riders on a track or trail that simply have no idea how to ride a bike properly. It's scary how many riders don't even know there is a right and wrong way! I manage a dealership, and far too often people act like they know how to ride. As soon as they sit on the bike, it's clear they don't. Technique before speed. Thank you for this! I'll be recommending your channel with the others I already recommend for now on!

I was being real critical listening because moving forward when u come up short instead of dropping back on the seat when landing short was the biggest an safest thing i learned..an once i did it i realized how elite a group of racers i had just moved into in the 90s no one had a clue about that beside mac emig windham 5 or 6 guys it wasnt many out of the top 100 national pros 90 were not doing it....right...peace very well done nice track nice dirt real dirt blackness....im from near Unadilla NY so i get excited when i see real dirt loamy stuff

I believe the fork does a better job of absorbing the initial landing thanks to the steeper angle to the ground. As long as it is properly dimensioned for rider's weight and speed. Ride safe!

Hey man my biggest issue is throttle control and controlling the bike while in the air. Sometimes if the Jump is big I get scared and lose throttle and completely case it. I’m riding everyday and really trying to master jumping. Trying to get faster while at it. I’ve been riding for 2 years now. Any advice? Your videos are very helpful btw. Thank you!!
find a nice safe jump like a table top that you can work up too. once you clear it.. keep jumping it over and over again until it's easy for you. then move up to a little bigger one.. repeat the same thing 👍🏼👍🏼

Wish I had this kind of insight 25-30 years ago. It may have saved me 2 broken wristes at same time, broken ribs, etc. I do wonder though if I switch from the 250 2-stroke to 450f if it makes the throttle control easier?? I still find myself in those oh-shit moments from just a small inconsistency in throttle. Trying to practice in-air adjustments but can't seem to master it (panic rev, brake, lean). Maybe a video on such? There isn't any out there worth while. Thx for vids!
450 can make jump easier for sure cause it has so much power. just stay stead on the gas to get started but once and once you got that you can start to roll the gas on right as you get to the tip and power all the way off the tip.. help give you the boots to get over the jump 👍🏼👍🏼
Big thing about being forward u have to be very forward when hit the gas it moves to the rear that was the one thing that made a big confidence boost was getting very forward an doing that row motion with elbows up real got me comfortable with the take a lot landing to same thing may be a little slower move...but same thanks
I have one question.... when you're in the air do you keep applying throttle or let go when you land, also do you need to shift gears in the air? I need someone to explain in detail what controls I use in a jump...please let me know, thank you!
In the air hit throttle to bring the back wheel down and to bring the back wheel up you pull in the clutch and tap the back brake. and right before you land get on the gas not for safety but to go faster (or to level your self out in the air). And let’s say you hit a jump 3 gear pinned but since you have wounded out the gear you shift up in the air (no need to pull in clutch) so you can rev the bike and keep increasing rpm to keep the back wheel down to level the bike.
The tricky thing of why its important to listen real carefull to Ron is u have a 220 pound motocycle that has a pogo stick in front an in back if u dont cover weight evenly or control one or other they will fight against u an make things really tuf...like imagine riding sitting to far back an no weight on the front it would be hard to make a turn with no weight on the front wheel jump and its even more important...flat landings are a good safe start till u learn ur bikes attitude of how it flys...patience everyone learns at different speeds dont let friends push u

Finding someone with the same cc size bike that seems experienced and ask them which gear to hit it on and ask if you can follow behind them and while they jump it you roll the jump. So now you now what gear to be in and a good idea of what speed to hit it. After that you just have to send it.

I do motocross and I normally do jumps quite well. I don’t get the chance to go very often and it’s weeks before I go from the last time so I kinda miss out on improving. Just recently tho I went to my main track I always go to after he changed the layout and I have never been so disappointed with my riding when I went Friday just gone. I was jumping over a jump and nosing it pretty much every single time where as before I used to hit it with quite some speed and take off and land smooth. Now I’m all over the shot and was getting extremely frustrated and put me off wanting to jump it after a few scary noses. I’m gonna try and practice my body stance a bit more and it hit me a lot with what you said about having the throttle on smoothly all the way through to prevent being bucked, that may of been causing it but god was scary. Wish I could go more often! That is my goal when my van is fixed to go as often as I can every weekend if possible.

You can apply throttle to the bike in midair if the rear end has bucked up too high for your liking. The increased wheel spin pulls the rear end down while you are in flight.
My first day at a track on a quad I find I keep landing in the middle is that because I’m not giving it enough? I’m close to clearing it but not really

jumping a 250 two stroke vs 450 four stroke, body position will be really similar, the power and the speed would be a little different depending on your bike.
I asked my brother this very question my ktm65.... Moments later I was hitting a single 4-5th gear almost as fast as I could. Ended up going probably 20 feet and crashed. He had to ride it home.
Someone told me to never hit the back brake while in the air, otherwise the bike will stall is that true. Also when should I start putting the throttle back on. I know riders will blip the throttle in mid air about half way should I do that then put the gas on again right before I land or just hit it right before I land I'm just worried about my bike stalling mid air or after I land. Lastly, what gear should I be in roughly second or third?
Instead of seat bouncing a jump, (which I never liked, but it does seem to get more distance when needed on a smooth track.), I use to bunny hop off the face like bunny hopping a bicycle. At first, I was sacred of the jumps as they got bigger, so I tried to clear them with the bunny hop and going slower, (not the best philosophy for racing), but as I got faster, I would be able to clear a double, (for example) from the inside line with some faster guys than me who couldn't.
When idling in the air, the engine brake decelerates the rear wheel. Especially on 4 strokes This makes the bike pivot forward, due to rotational momentum physics. This can be mostly corrected for by revving the bike during flight. A quick half throttle twist "revv" is oftentimes heard from intermediate to advanced mx riders. The opposite is also true. By tapping the rear brake during flight, you will accentuate the nose drop pivot. The effect is relative to the rolling speed of the wheel. Note that the clutch is simultaneously engaged to avoid stalling. This effect also takes place, to some extent, if you lock up your front wheel mid-air. However that dramatically increases your risk of crashing when you land. Ride safe!
yeah it could be if they hit the rear break but try not to get into that habit. rear break is for back up if the front end is to high. rotate the bike with the correct body position. but it could be a little engine break as well as Olle said above 👍🏼

Most helpful was the concept of loading the suspension with the throttle. Jolly good.

no if you coming off a jump into a corner you can just down shift in air. you don't need the clutch 👍🏼

its smoother for sure and will help keep forward momentum. if the front is high it can slam down and try to pull the bars out of your hands
I believe the fork does a better job of absorbing the initial landing thanks to the steeper angle to the ground. As long as it is properly dimensioned for rider's weight and speed.

Hey man my biggest issue is throttle control and controlling the bike while in the air. Sometimes if the Jump is big I get scared and lose throttle and completely case it. I’m riding everyday and really trying to master jumping. Trying to get faster while at it. I’ve been riding for 2 years now. Any advice? Your videos are very helpful btw. Thank you!!
find a nice safe jump like a table top
that you can work up too. once you clear it.. keep jumping it over and over again until it's easy for you. then move up to a little bigger one.. repeat the same thing 👍🏼👍🏼

Wish I had this kind of insight 25-30 years ago. It may have saved me 2 broken wristes at same time, broken ribs, etc. I do wonder though if I switch from the 250 2-stroke to 450f if it makes the throttle control easier?? I still find myself in those oh-shit moments from just a small inconsistency in throttle. Trying to practice in-air adjustments but can't seem to master it (panic rev, brake, lean). Maybe a video on such? There isn't any out there worth while. Thx for vids!
450 can make jump easier for sure cause it has so much power. just stay stead on the gas to get started but once and once you got that you can start to roll the gas on right as you get to the tip and power all the way off the tip.. help give you the boots to get over the jump 👍🏼👍🏼

Big thing about being forward u have to be very forward when hit the gas it moves to the rear that was the one thing that made a big confidence boost was getting very forward an doing that row motion with elbows up real got me comfortable with the take a lot landing to same thing may be a little slower move...but same thanks
I loved the tip with keeping the gas when hitting the jump so the suspension doesn’t buck me.
I have one question.... when you're in the air do you keep applying throttle or let go when you land, also do you need to shift gears in the air? I need someone to explain in detail what controls I use in a jump...please let me know, thank you!
In the air hit throttle to bring the back wheel down and to bring the back wheel up you pull in the clutch and tap the back brake. and right before you land get on the gas not for safety but to go faster (or to level your self out in the air). And let’s say you hit a jump 3 gear pinned but since you have wounded out the gear you shift up in the air (no need to pull in clutch) so you can rev the bike and keep increasing rpm to keep the back wheel down to level the bike.

The tricky thing of why its important to listen real carefull to Ron is u have a 220 pound motocycle that has a pogo stick in front an in back if u dont cover weight evenly or control one or other they will fight against u an make things really tuf...like imagine riding sitting to far back an no weight on the front it would be hard to make a turn with no weight on the front wheel jump and its even more important...flat landings are a good safe start till u learn ur bikes attitude of how it flys...patience everyone learns at different speeds dont let friends push u

Yeah where i been kid rock where u been thanks...i started riding in 78 an the pros werent jumping they were launching singles an landing how ever they landed there was much to learn Bob hannah was the only one to di doubles an i wasnt sure the way he rode in the late 70s if that how i wanted to jump...peace
How do you go upon attempting your first real double? What would you recommend would up my odds of successfully nailing it?
Finding someone with the same cc size bike that seems experienced and ask them which gear to hit it on and ask if you can follow behind them and while they jump it you roll the jump. So now you now what gear to be in and a good idea of what speed to hit it. After that you just have to send it.

What about using the throttle and brake mid air to rotate the bike by exchanging angular momentum between the bike and rear wheel?
To bring the the back wheel down give it gas, to bring the back wheel up in air pull in clutch tap the rear brake release clutch the land the jump
I do motocross and I normally do jumps quite well. I don’t get the chance to go very often and it’s weeks before I go from the last time so I kinda miss out on improving. Just recently tho I went to my main track I always go to after he changed the layout and I have never been so disappointed with my riding when I went Friday just gone. I was jumping over a jump and nosing it pretty much every single time where as before I used to hit it with quite some speed and take off and land smooth. Now I’m all over the shot and was getting extremely frustrated and put me off wanting to jump it after a few scary noses. I’m gonna try and practice my body stance a bit more and it hit me a lot with what you said about having the throttle on smoothly all the way through to prevent being bucked, that may of been causing it but god was scary. Wish I could go more often! That is my goal when my van is fixed to go as often as I can every weekend if possible.

You can apply throttle to the bike in midair if the rear end has bucked up too high for your liking. The increased wheel spin pulls the rear end down while you are in flight.

Get a 4 stroke
jumping a 250 two stroke vs 450 four stroke, body position will be really similar, the power and the speed would be a little different depending on your bike.
first time i did was on a cr500, almost died🤘🤣

I asked my brother this very question my ktm65.... Moments later I was hitting a single 4-5th gear almost as fast as I could. Ended up going probably 20 feet and crashed. He had to ride it home.

Someone told me to never hit the back brake while in the air, otherwise the bike will stall is that true. Also when should I start putting the throttle back on. I know riders will blip the throttle in mid air about half way should I do that then put the gas on again right before I land or just hit it right before I land I'm just worried about my bike stalling mid air or after I land. Lastly, what gear should I be in roughly second or third?
Instead of seat bouncing a jump, (which I never liked, but it does seem to get more distance when needed on a smooth track.), I use to bunny hop off the face like bunny hopping a bicycle. At first, I was sacred of the jumps as they got bigger, so I tried to clear them with the bunny hop and going slower, (not the best philosophy for racing), but as I got faster, I would be able to clear a double, (for example) from the inside line with some faster guys than me who couldn't.
My son was asking me how to jump a motorcycle and I just told him “pin it with balls”… he crashed

When idling in the air, the engine brake decelerates the rear wheel. Especially on 4 strokes
This makes the bike pivot forward, due to rotational momentum physics.
This can be mostly corrected for by revving the bike during flight. A quick half throttle twist "revv" is oftentimes heard from intermediate to advanced mx riders.
The opposite is also true. By tapping the rear brake during flight, you will accentuate the nose drop pivot. The effect is relative to the rolling speed of the wheel. Note that the clutch is simultaneously engaged to avoid stalling.
This effect also takes place, to some extent, if you lock up your front wheel mid-air. However that dramatically increases your risk of crashing when you land.

yeah it could be if they hit the rear break but try not to get into that habit. rear break is for back up if the front end is to high. rotate the bike with the correct body position. but it could be a little engine break as well as Olle said above 👍🏼
