@@TheManBehindTheMask1_really? I kind of thought so but wasnt sure
The early MK games were all live recorded animations, they actually filmed real people and used the footage to make the sprites for the game. Because of this every character needed to be humanoid and simple enough to be a costume that an actor would wear countless times throughout production, hence all the color swaps and simple designs of the early games. This is why raiden was designed as a regular looking human, because it is literally footage of a regular human in every animation, I guess it stuck and they felt no need to change him once it was technically possible to create more complex characters

"Change his name for no reason"
Nah it has a very good reason, no one would be able to pronounce the name of the guy he's bases on

@@alexavalos5437 its just easier to change the name for a wider audience

@@HexManiac-nf1yg it's easier to say because first of all, it's widely known how to pronounce because people had to, and listen to this part here , LEARNED how to say it. Something with tachovsky. No one wants to learn to say an indigenous name and that's fine, but changing it to something else for your convenience is lazy and a slap to the face.
@@alexavalos5437 first off, most people can't say tchaikovsky's name, you couldn't even write it correctly. Man I am so old. When the first Mortal Kombat came out, they used live action humans/actors for the game, that’s probably the reason why. It was new tech at the time, and it blew our freaking minds!
The lore is that humans had always expressed fear over the knowledge of other realms and Earthrealms protectors kept actual knowledge to a minimum and Liu Kang continues that trend, with Shao Kahn criticizing him about Earthrealms ignorance. That is most likely why they are not actual representations of mythological figures from mankind’s perspective in the MK universe.
I’m pretty sure Raidan’s design is inspired by the character Lightning from Big Trouble in Little China since he also wore a wide conical hat that obscured his face most of the time.
I didn't know they looked like that actually but I'm gonna be honest I love how Fujins face looks in mk11 and his voice fits pretty well definitely wana see him in upcoming games

I would guess that changing his name would make it easier to pronounce and/or spell. What did they change it to?
Kotal Kahn (Kahn is his tittle)
Kotal Khan, Khan being passed down as a title from Shao Khan and other prior Khans that rule over outworld.
See his official name in the fighter select screen is Kotal Kahn(kahn is his title as others have explained) but in the story mode people have called him Koatal (pronounced Koh-uh-tal instead of Coat-ull) and idk why but it confuses me bc i dont think it was ever explained why hes referred to as that
@@gh0style239 Because all the names we read are based on Earth Realmers pronunciation while the outworlder cast refers to him properly. In my headcannon the cast calls him different names corresponding to their knowledge of the realm and level of respect for Kotal.
Kotal Kahn
You practiced that pronunciation for at least 2 days straight. 😂
My understanding was they used the Buddhist thunder deity, Vajrapani, in his Chinese form as the basis for Raiden in Mortal Kombat. Vajrapani is also the protector deity of Shaolin Temple, so Raiden's affinity with Shaolin in the series is appropriate
big trouble in little china is the inspiration for raiden. the character named "Lightning" is the direct inspiration
Except for the first 30 years Raiden was portrayed as a white man in all MK media. 😂
@@majorlazor5058 Do I have some amazing things to tell you about the Universal Door Chapter of the Lotus Sutra regarding the infinite forms Avalokitesvara can take (including the form of Vajrapani, which is why painted Shaolin iconography of Vajrapani often has a little Guanyin above his head)
They where based on and reference to "Big trouble in Little China"
Last one, "Also let's make him a jobber."
Its just so hard to say, nobody is gonna remember the guys name if its not iconic.
At least for Raiden, they probably just based them on the lightning guy from Big Trouble in Little China, I doubt Ed Boon and the gang had an extensive knowledge of Japanese mythology.
I also thought the same thing and it also includs the inspiration for Shang Tsunh's creepy old man form from the first game
Certainly it didn't look like it to me...but I'm hardly the expert...it's just that I've never even noticed the supposed connections until I've heard of them recently,
until now I was always assiming they were meant to be original creations with no ties or inspiration based in real myths
Wondering why more people havent pointed this out, thought this fact was more well known
Yeah, Tobias based the design off of Lightning. It's been a well known fact for ages.
I mean Tobias did know a little bit about mythologies, but it wasn't really integral to his story.
I was wondering when you'd make a sketch about Mortal Kombat! I noticed that MK shirt in several of your other videos.
Mortal Kombat was a child smashing his random action figures together. Now it looks like a 90210 reboot.
I actually love how inclusive MK is of real life cultures and implements them in game but as a more exaggerated fictional take to fit the games universe, does it all respectfully and badass imo
If your familiar with how terrifying Raiden and Fujin are during battle you’ll see that they certainly didn’t lose all of their demonic traits.
Thanks for telling us you don't understand the history of MK or how to market a character.
I KNEW as soon as the Aztec God was shown, he was about to talk about my boy Kotal!
"Let's change his name for no reason."
Me: right, because that name is easy to say in passing conversation.
When I first started playing Mortal Kombat I immediately compared Kotal Kahn to the Aztec God ( can pronounce it, cannot spell it ) since I learnt so much about the Aztecs and then was told he was based off of him. Also compared Fujin and Raiden… but I still love Fujin, specifically his hair
Huitzilopochtli (wichilopostli) it's a pretty easy name to pronounce once you've done it a few times, or maybe it's just because I'm Mexican but actually I think it's the first
I mean, yes, huitz is not Even the hardest name; Chalchiuhtlicue and Macuilcozcacuauhtli on the other hand...

Macuilcozcacuauhtli is of the Macuiltonaleque, also known as the Ahuiateteoh, the deities of Vice.
Is the Deity of Gluttony, and the oposite of Apiztetl, the Deity of Famine.
His partner is Maculxóchitl, the Deity of Bets (like, betting games)
@Tido totter Chalchiuhtlicue, on the other hand, is the Deity of Water, makes, Rivers and ponds, his Husband Tlaloc is the Deity of Rain.
She also was one of the Temporal Suns (the fourth sun), during the Fifth Sun Myth, just before Huitzilopochtli.
This is just to Say, Mexica God names are wild xD
TBF, the second one is a good idea
"My favorite character is Huitzi....Huit....Hut...the green guy"
They might still look like that. Remember, Raidens appearance is merely a disguise he uses when he steps foot in Outworld

To be fair tho , human fujin looks awesome
"Oh who's that?“
"That is the God of War"
"Cool! Let's put it in the Mortal Kombat games"
"Sure, I'm sure people will love it"
"Yeah but let's use Santa Monica's depiction of the God of War"
The fact that Fujin looks like Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) does give his case some legitimacy 😂
And while I like the characters as they are I wouldn’t mind some kinda form where they look more accurate to the lure… or maybe they have halfling kids that look mutated kinda like in Beowulf
I like Okamiden's version of thunder onis. They play rock music really loud to make thunder and lightning and wear tiger skin and have jam sessions with Ami.
With how far mods have come I'm surprised they didn't make a mod for the first two to look more accurate.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Maybe due to hitboxes there are no mods of that, it would be extremly unfair havoing a hitbox that is much smaller than the character you see.
@@AugustoEL that's why I hate fast characters in games. Their hit box is either smaller than what you see. Or they out run their hit box.
