Hey Justin, I have a Samsung TV that has a received which everything is plugged into it (AppleTV, Xbox, Cable box) which we are able to use that one remote control for it all. Then there is one wire that connects the receiver to the TV. Will the Philips Hue Sync Box work that way? Do you know how does it get connected? Thank you
Yes. You will want to have the tv output audio using an optical out cable. Then have the receiver plug to HDMI sync box then to TV. You’ll still be able to use receiver for everything and HDMI sync box will stay on that one input always.
Very nice for those with HDMI devices, doesn't work with the single TV. It only works with external HDMI devices to connect but in 2020, when TVs have everything integrated (Prime Video, Netflix, etc etc) I think it's not worth the price.
Am I able to use my lights on the TV without having the Sync Box or a bridge ? For example, if I hook up the lights to my tv and then plug in the lights, am I able to use the app to control the light color. I understand the point of the sync box is for the lights to be in sync with the game system/movie I’m on, but if I just want to be able to control the color of the light on my TV (like putting one solid color) will I be able to ?
I bought Philips Ambilight TV and I couldn't be happier! However I would like to fill the entire room with these lights when having a truly cinematic experience. Is the Hue Bridge enough to sync Hue bulbs with the ambilight TV (it should all be connected via WiFi)? Or I actually need the Play HDMI Box? Or I need both of these?
This is a good product but like most have stated the price is not right. If I connect my XBOX One Or PS4 to this device and I was to play a video from Netflix would this still work?
I have a question. I have some external TV speakers that connect with HDMI to my TV. So I have my Apple TV Connected to the TV at HDMI port 2 and my speakers to HDMI port 1 using ARC. Would this the Philips Hue Play work with my current setup?
Just found your videos and love them! I love seeing how to make the most of my hue lights. I’ve had them for years and love seeing how to make the most of them!!
For anyone looking for the answer... It does NOT work with any Dynamic Meta Data (HDR10+ or DOLBY Vision)... it WILL pass through meaning you will still get the image of from these formats, but you will NOT get any light syncing. It WILL work with Static Meta Data (HDR), the sound formats like Dolby Atmos will work as this had no impact on the lighting. Imo a big oversight from Philips not supporting two of the biggest up and coming visual formats on the market, especially considering the cost of the sync box, it’s literally out of date as soon as you purchase it.

Randy Augustus The issue you have is, the market the Sync Box is aimed at, are tech geeks, who will already have higher end TV’s that support these video formats. I design and install home cinema for a living, most clients would have no idea what this even is unless I brought it to there attention. Philips Hue is a great product, I use it throughout my own home and provides a solution for what I need. However if they are going to charge £229 for a sync light box that’s missing more than half of the variations of HDR, they either need to offer a solution for those or drop the price of the box.
Does it work if you put a single strip all the way around the tv? - as in can a single light strip have ..for example.. a red in the top left and blue in the bottom right?
I have a question in order to use the sync box with your devices during the daytime is there a way to turn off the lights and keep them off and the daylight or would you have to implement something such as a smart plug to connect your lights to so you could keep the lights off during the daytime and still be able to use the Philips sync box...... and one more additional question is there a way to have it automatically come on or get it to work with a smart assistant searches Alexa so you wouldn't have to pick up the app all the time when you wanted to turn the box on?
Hi, Justin. A quick question: does it work (just lights, no music) watching videos from a hard disk connected to the tv through hdmi? Or must I connect the hard disk to the Hue Box first? Thanx in advance!
Hey! All devices need to go through the sync box first. if you still have questions or want a better answer - Philips Hue customer support is happy to help on Twitter and Facebook :)
I’m guessing you’re watching movies on a usb hard drive? If so, that plays locally on your tv, and skips the input of the sync device. So, no it wouldn’t work in that situation. We use a raspberry pi with OSMC running Kodi to access our hard drives. The Pi can be plugged into the sync. This should allow it to work properly. Plus with the pi, once you setup Kodi, you will have a nice menu system to quickly access all your content.
I was able to get the sync box set up and working with the hue gradient lights. My problem is the lights will not sync unless I start the sync app on my phone. So if I am not home the lights do not sync with the tv. What am I doing wrong?
If you are using a receiver that is then plugged into the sync box, yes. If not, no, BUT the sync box will switch to which ever device gets turned on. So however you turn those devices on, it will switch over.
@@Justin_tech but I always have a long hdmi connected to my pc and a box from my TV provider.. So when I turn my pc on while my GF is watching, we use our smartphone to switch it back then?

Hello, does the app switch from device to device or do you have to use multiple remotes to go from DirecTV to AppleTV. I currently run all my devices through Caavo. Does this replace Caavo as the hub or are they compatible some how linked together ? Thanks
If you activate a device, the sync box will automatically switch to that device. More often than not it works well. Occasionally I’ll accidentally switch to the wrong device.
I setup ambient lighting strip with a raspberry pi 6 years ago on our tv that does this. Total cost including the pie, $110. I’m sure philips could match this price with their device.
Hello. I live stream my tv while I teach. Its smart touch screen tv on which I write while teaching .Do you think Philips Hue will improv the contrast and sharpness of the colour
There are settings on the app which allow you to control brightness. There's also the new Gradient lightstrip by Hue which I reviewed - you should check it out!
This definitely looks like an awesome device. But if you are somebody who is an audiophile like myself, You are going to have equipment that will decode Dolby Atmos and not have to worry or not this Sync be compatible or not. Listen to what to said where you use this as the last link in your video chain to your TV, and honestly if that is the case, then why have 4 HDMI inputs where you only need one and it is just to pass video to your TV or projector. I have seen this device in various other media sources and was wondering what it is capable of doing and your video explains it perfectly. I have been looking a way to do this with my Hue lights in my home theater without having to stream everything through my laptop which can be a pain....This will bridge the gap on using my lights to enhance the viewing experience in my theater and give me that added WOW factor my guests will have on my movie nights. Would really love a location for troubleshooting. My sync box won't turn on and off using Apple TV4. It used to do it, now all of a sudden it stopped working. If I want to turn off the lights, I have to unplug them. Everything else works fine.
What about HDMI-CEC? Will it pass through control commands? For example, Today I can use Google Assistant voice commands to turn my TV on and off using Chromecast. Will I still be able to do so with the sync box in the way?
How do you switch between inputs on this? For instance if I’m playing my Switch, and want to watch a movie on my Apple TV, how do I go from one to the other?
It will automatically switch inputs when it senses a new device turned on (you can turn this feature off) you can also use your voice assistant to switch inputs OR program a controller using IR commands. Happy to make a video on the letter features if that’s of interest!
Justin_tech I really would love to see a video on this topic as literally none exist and I know there’s definitely got to be more people like me super curious
Is this the same idea as the Ambilight TV's? You can sync Hue lights to the content on the TV I think, having the colours change all around the room if you have Hue bulbs, strip lights etc.
Hi all just got the sync box. Question. I can't get the sync box to auto switch inputs when I turn on my ps5 or Xbox or Telstra tv. I'm waiting on the hub to get delivered. Would this be why it won't switch?
Thanks for your video. I have had my sync box for a couple months now an use it mainly for my PlayStation however just purchased a 4K firestick. I have visual but my lights won’t sync with my tv. Any advice?
You mention that the box needs to be placed between the reciever and the TV (and not as I would have thought before the reciever). Then how do get both the surround sound from a second device though the reciever (e.g. a game setup) and the "swich" funktionality you mention in the video?
Hey Justin, question: how do you change the inputs on the sync box other than by powering the devices on and off? I use my Bose universal remote from my soundbar to control my TV and everything else, and don't want to lose that functionality.
As of now, you can also use the app. SOON with an upcoming update you’ll be able to program it with IR, so you’ll be able to use your universal remote. You’ll also be able to use voice commands. No word on when the update is coming, but should be soon....check out my video show this off: ruclips.net/video/XYacflEdEN4/видео.html
Can you have more than one entertainment area? For example a TV and Projector? When using the projector only the lights in the corner of the room should be utilised and not the ones behind/around the TV.
How about a video that goes into the settings such as CEC, etc.? Can you go into that? Sometimes difficult to understand how we should have it set up and my instructions didn't go over those settings.
Considering I have the Razer Chroma app are my Xbox. Do I need this to have the lights match my Xbox? If so, does it also work if I played music on my Xbox?
evergreenpenguin can you tell me where? I can’t see any mention of cash back on the Philips site which as far as I know is the only way to purchase it atm in the UK.
I have the hue sync app on my computer which is linked to tv via hdmi. Netflix, youtube, and music works with out that expensive box. Am I missing something?
I just recently got it for a gift. To much for my blood though. But my question is this is it possible to hook it up to my sound bar. Because so far no go. Cuz I have sound bar I want to use it with it. Would love some feedback. Thanks
Ok so some questions about the automatic source switching: Does it detect if a new device turns on even when the device it's set on is still on? And also what remotes are supported by the IR reciever? I have a Logitech Harmony Hub that controls every single piece of equipment in my setup. Is there any way to have the Harmony Hub control the source selection on the Sync Box? The inability to do that might almost be a deal breaker for me. That or I'll have to use an HDMI selector that is compatible with Harmony then use the out from that into the Hue Sync Box, then into the TV but I wanted to eliminate that kind of complexity.
I have the harmony hub as well and use it to turn on all my devices. Yes, the sync box will switch to a new device that is turned on even if the current one is still on. You can also switch inputs on the app, but I have never had to do it manually. The harmony remote can turn on your devices the way it does currently, once they turn on, the sync box will sense it. If you are using a receiver/that’s where your devices are plugged in, you just plug the receiver into the sync box. Does that answer all your questions?
@Aidan Bazan I didnt have issues withe devices on.... Ask Philips Hue's customer support team on Facebook or Twitter - they will happily answer this for you!
Regarding not being able to light up Smart TV apps, I was wondering, could you run a HDMI cable from the TV *out*, into the Philips Hue Sync Box and not bother with the output of the Sync Box? Does that work?
Which hdmi input on the TV should u put the box into? Or doesn't it matter? Sometime the screen goes out and snow/static comes on then I need to unplug the hdmi on the ps4 to get picture on again what could be the issue here?
Im not sure what the issue is. It doesnt matter which input the box connects to on the tv. I'd say contact Philips Hue support on Twitter or Facebook...but this could be an issue with your TV?
Can you use the TV HDMI OUT and plug into the Sync Box ? When only using apps from tv..and no play external play boxes... Ah u answer that at 2:06 ... They havnt changed this by any chance?
At the moment, you can only do this through the app (unfortunately), BUT an update coming this spring will allow for remotes and voice assistants to do it. Check out my video update here: ruclips.net/video/XYacflEdEN4/видео.html

No offense but that speaks volumes for "Customer support"
What about HDMI-CEC? Will it pass through control commands?
For example, Today I can use Google Assistant voice commands to turn my TV on and off using Chromecast.
Will I still be able to do so with the sync box in the way?
Ask Philips hue support on twitter or Facebook
How do you switch between inputs on this? For instance if I’m playing my Switch, and want to watch a movie on my Apple TV, how do I go from one to the other?
It will automatically switch inputs when it senses a new device turned on (you can turn this feature off) you can also use your voice assistant to switch inputs OR program a controller using IR commands. Happy to make a video on the letter features if that’s of interest!
Justin_tech I really would love to see a video on this topic as literally none exist and I know there’s definitely got to be more people like me super curious
I just bought a sync box and 2 bars do I need a bridge also? Trying to get the adaptive light to work with my tv
Yes you need a bridge
Is this the same idea as the Ambilight TV's? You can sync Hue lights to the content on the TV I think, having the colours change all around the room if you have Hue bulbs, strip lights etc.
yea pretty much. Love that I can have lights all over my house that are connected to the tv/music!
Any advice?
Make sure the stick is plugged into either port 2 or 4 for 4K contrnt
Quick question. Can multiple color appear on one light/bulb? Or can different color appear on one (I have a 80” strip light attached behind my tv)?
No unfortunately :/
You mention that the box needs to be placed between the reciever and the TV (and not as I would have thought before the reciever). Then how do get both the surround sound from a second device though the reciever (e.g. a game setup) and the "swich" funktionality you mention in the video?
Use an optical cable from the tv to receiver.
Sir you killed it!! Love your video
Thank you very much! 😄
Can you have more than one entertainment area? For example a TV and Projector? When using the projector only the lights in the corner of the room should be utilised and not the ones behind/around the TV.
Yes you can. On the Philips hue app you can create multiple entertainment areas
How about a video that goes into the settings such as CEC, etc.? Can you go into that? Sometimes difficult to understand how we should have it set up and my instructions didn't go over those settings.
So I don’t have Apple TV or Roku or Firestick but I do have a Amazon Fire T.V. you think it would work on this?
Absolutely
Quick question does hdmi 2.1 affect anything?
Considering I have the Razer Chroma app are my Xbox. Do I need this to have the lights match my Xbox? If so, does it also work if I played music on my Xbox?
Fantastic video, very informative. Can’t wait until this is released in the UK next year.
Just seen it pop up on the App. £230 from Philips direct. Bit of a rip off price is you ask me. £99 yet but £230 is taking the mick
Simon Mallinson thanks for the update. I’d read it’d be about £200 but £230 is a little on the steep side!
evergreenpenguin can you tell me where? I can’t see any mention of cash back on the Philips site which as far as I know is the only way to purchase it atm in the UK.
I have the hue sync app on my computer which is linked to tv via hdmi. Netflix, youtube, and music works with out that expensive box. Am I missing something?
It’s for people who don’t want a computer hooked up
I just recently got it for a gift. To much for my blood though. But my question is this is it possible to hook it up to my sound bar. Because so far no go. Cuz I have sound bar I want to use it with it. Would love some feedback. Thanks
Would love to see a video on that if Possible
Ben Daniel don’t think so
I can’t find the light you have on the floor to the left of the tv (looks like a black can light)
Where did you get that?
The black fan is separate from the light. The canister is linked in the description of this video. I’ve placed a hue bulb inside it.
Awesome! Found it! I have two extra bulbs and going to put them into a canister like you did!
Thanks!!
Can I use the box with any other smart strip light?
Anything Philips Hue
Has this system been updated to support Dolby atoms??
Will this work with the original bridge?
what does it mean its not support dolby atmos? it means that if ill run dolby atmos, ill get only 7.1 or something? or the lights will not work?
Are the ports on the Hue Sync Box HDMI 2.1?
Does this just do the same thing the computer app can do I'm confused is it just a better sync
Can you use the TV HDMI OUT and plug into the Sync Box ? When only using apps from tv..and no play external play boxes...
Ah u answer that at 2:06 ... They havnt changed this by any chance?
Unfortunately, no.
Dolby atmos is working!!!
Markus S. Dont need that sound is not effecting the hue show!
That is bad ass! Great vid man, and super cool setup. Will be getting this soon. Sub'd
Your 720p video looks clearer than some 4k videos I’ve seen from other youtubers
Hahaha love it.
is there anyway to sync it with smart tv only ?
Unfortunately, no. Need an external media device.
How do you switch inputs once all the devices are connected or simply want to go back to something that's already on?
At the moment, you can only do this through the app (unfortunately), BUT an update coming this spring will allow for remotes and voice assistants to do it. Check out my video update here: ruclips.net/video/XYacflEdEN4/видео.html
Hi Justin great videos and great help, just ordered the Gradient Light through the help of watching your videos, so i have bought the HDMI sync box ready, so i want to try it out with my 2m lighstrip and 2 play bars, but I have a Samsung Smart TV (55') and of course it uses the Samsung one connect, could you please help or direct me on how to connect the Sync Box with my one connect, very frustrating atm
Did you ever run into constant disconnection issues? I bought one and was super hyped to use it, but then ran into issues. It would connect and run fine for a couple of minutes, and then out of the blue, it would stop.
I haven’t had any issues like that. I say restart the sync box and your hue bridge. Also make sure it’s updated to latest firmware. If you’re still having issues contact Hue support on Twitter/FB they respond in under 24 hours
Hey Justin, I really love the light canister you have. The link you have in the description is not the same canister. Are they no longer available?
Yea haven’t been able to find them....so I replaced with that link
Justin_tech wow that stinks. Yours are way better
Hi Justin!
I live in the uk and my brother is currently in America on vacation and could bring me back one. With a travel plug do you think the play sync box will work with uk hdmi TVs?
