When you were talking about the ents and you said, "maybe it could've been quicker", it made me chuckle a bit because one of the main characteristics of the ents is that they hate being "hastey". I think it was ment to drag on for that reason. Also, it made the March of the ents so much cooler because it showed you the two extremes of their personalities; either they're very passive and peaceful, or they wreck shit up.

Really the only thing about the Fellowship that would make it 8.5 is I thought it started off a little slow, but then didn't spend enought time at the Prancing Pony, which I have no idea why, but I majorly enjoyed those chapters in the book. :)

I think a good part of why the last film made you cry so much is the music; these films have some of the most insanely beautiful and emotionally-affecting music I have ever heard, let alone just film soundtracks. I could write an entire essay on just the music of these films.
I would offer my grades, but it would be kinda hard because I genuinely love the Lotr films pretty much perfectly equally, my list would probably look something like:
    6. The Hobbit the Battle of Five Armies
    - Smaug's death was a bit of a let-down (but was also in the book, imo), and it just didn't feel real in so many places, e.g. where the hell did they get the idea of those worms from? There's also quite a lot going on that just doesn't DO anything, just feels like weak universe-building. But to be fair, I really loved the portrayal of the dragon sickness, and how they dealt with that was really interesting.
    5. The Hobbit an Unexpected Journey
    - The music... bruh; the scene with the Dwarves Singing is fantastic, and the Riddles in the Dark scene was done almost perfectly. But those FUCKING RHOSGOBEL RABBITS WHAT THE FUCK JACKSON; they fucked up Radagast so completely that I am going to turn into a white girl and not even.
    4. The Hobbit the Desolation of Smaug
    - Everything with Cumbersmaug in was fucking glorious, it had a fantastic cliffhanger ending, and I quite enjoyed Bjern.
Of course all of the above includes Martin Freeman being basically the perfect hobbit.
    Now the really hard part:
    3. The Two Towers PROBABLY
    - Lowest mainly because they completely fucked up portraying Treebeard; like, they fucked up HARD. Also they made Theoden much more of a dick than in the book, and portrayed him as making poor decisions when he really wasn't. But Helm's Deep is awesome, and I just love Rohan in general. I did like how they changed Faramir however; made him quite a lot more interesting than in the book.
    2. Fellowship of the Ring PROBABLY
    - The music is iconic, possibly the best in the franchise, plus the Balrog vs Gandalf was incredible and brutal; the ending is one of my favourite scenes of the whole franchise, and the Shire is done perfectly. Boromir is great, and his death is heart-wrenching. But the way they did Lothlorien was a massive misstep in my opinion, and Moria was just so much better and more intense in the book.
    1. Return of the King PROBABLY
    - The charge of the Rohirrim is pretty much my favourite movie scene ever. The music, oh god the music... The battle of Minas Tirith (though in the extended edition the fact that the Witch King destroys Gandalf's staff is just so dumb, and a complete 180 on the books). I am actually somewhat glad they omitted the Scouring of the Shire, I think it works better without it; and the goddamned ending makes my cry every single time I watch it.
FYI I am a pretty damn hardcore Lotr fan - being basically my favourite universe and films of all time, and among my favourite books.

The Lord of the Rings original trilogy is just a perfect example of film making at its finest. The acting, the writing, the effects, the music... everything is just so spot on here. I love these movies, and always will.
So, when I watched Unexpected Journey, I loved it. It was just so amazing to go back into Jackson's Middle-Earth, and get goosebumps hearing the old music again on the big screen. It's this that makes me understand why Star Wars means so much to people. However, on refection, Unexpected Journey has it's moments, but it's very flawed, and it's two successors even more so.
It's all CGI, all plot stretching, and brilliant performances are lost in the shuffle. You are right about Movie 3: this should be Bilbo's story, it's how Tolkein wrote it after all, and it turned into a power play staring Bard, Thorin and the Elf King. Which was, unfortunately, dragged out far too much.
The Hobbit could have been brilliant if it remained 2 movies. Alas, we only have 3 average ones. Profit must come first I guess.

One thing I really liked with the two main pre-battle speeches in the return of the king (ride of the rohirrim and black gates) is that in both scenes the person delivering the speach is seated on a horse and constantly moving like a nervous person pacing. it really builds the sense of suspense and anxiety. Then when you see the characters disregard that anxiety and charge head on into a mass of enemies it just feels so much more badass.

I gotta say that 'fellowship' is by far the best to me. It's the truest to the source material of all the movies. When the film ended with Sam and Frodo in the boat the whole theatre gave a standing ovation. The audience's gratitude for such a true and faithful recreation was palpable. They knocked it out of the park with that one.

  • @Strifegar

I'm not sure what happened to Peter Jackson but I feel like he really failed with The Hobbit. It was the characters. He had three movies to let us get to know the dwarves but I couldn't tell you which is which, other than Thorin. If he had only worked harder on character developement, I would have liked them. I would give The Hobbit a 3/10 and thats only because I loved the book.

I watched a video recently that gave a really good explanation for all the endings in ROTK. The author drew the distinction between plot and story. When the ring is destroyed, that's the end of the plot. But the story is Frodo's quest to free himself from the ring's influence. He failed in that quest because he would have kept the ring if Gollum hadn't taken it from him. Because of this, even though the ring was destroyed, he hadn't lost his desire for it. He smiles when he is reunited with the fellowship, but each scene ends with a look of sadness, concern or discomfort on his face like something is still wrong or doesn't feel right. Especially the scene when Bilbo asks Frodo about "that old ring of [his]" and that he "should liked to have held it one last time". This proves to Frodo that no matter how old he gets, he'll never be free of the ring so long as he stays in Middle-Earth. It isn't until he is boarding the ship to the Grey Havens and turns back to Sam, Merry and Pippin and smiles with genuine happiness that the story finally comes to an end and Frodo is free of the ring's influence.
Sorry if that got a bit long-winded, but I really like that interpretation of the film. Even after 14 years of regular viewings of the film, its given me a new appreciation for the ending.

Just taking one small issue with something you said - The hunger games was written as a Trilogy, they didn't pull 3 movies out of one book, there were actually 3 books. And having read all three I honestly think it should have been condensed into 2, as they got worse and worse as they went on.
Other than that agree with mostly everything you said on LOTR and The Hobbit. When you think about the fact that Peter Jackson had about 3 years of pre-production for Lord Of The rings However, and was only given a month to plan/write/build The Hobbit, it's surprising its as good as it is. If it weren't for Peter Jackson being a master of his craft we'd have been delivered a shitshow.

I don't know why Peter decided to make the hobbit a 3 part series. I mean, lotr was three long books in three movies. the hobbit was one medium sized book in three movies. Lotr had a lot of stuff cut. Where as hobbit had so much fluff. It was still kinda fun though in it's own way.

He originally wanted to let someone else make it, and they were going to make a film that would have completely butchured the book, and he came in right before production and didn't want to delay it any longer because it was originally supposed to come out in 2005, so it made it into a trilogy to give him an extra 2 years to make it. As a die hard fan I would have prefered it get delayed, but I still had fun with them.

I'm not a huge fantasy fan you know like Games of Thrones and all that. Personally it's a tad bit too intense with all the uncomfortable forced sex and the cringing Homoerotism and will be a very long time to get back into it though I'm not sure if I even will. There are some exceptions mostly in movies and Lord of the Rings defiantly tops it and The Hobbit film are pretty good as well though 3 might have been stretching it a bit but I still like it in some areas and this is how I would rank them: though some changes may be required in future viewings:
    1) Return of the King
    2) Two Towers
    3) Fellowship of the Ring
    4) Desolation of Smaug
    5) An Unexpected Journey
    6) Battle of the Five Armies

also I'm kind of a fan of the cartoon version from the 70s or the 80s as far as The Hobbit I think that was more violent and told more of the story then the three films did just saying plus a lot more dwarves died in the cartoon. In the movie, only three or four? C'mon, Peter Jackson

I agree with your ranking, I also was so emotionally hit by the return of the king and it doesn't get any easier on repeat viewing. while the Hobbit is not as good as the Lord of the rings, I enjoyed it quite a lot and think they could have used some editing but they are still good, though I'm not exactly rational, I'm such a LotR fangirl I only need the theme music to love a movie..really put that music on a blank screen and I'd still watch it!

"In this scene where Faramir charges into the orcs and there's that music, it's pretty emotional"
Wow, if I hadn't watched the movie for like 1000 times already, that understatement alone could've put me off completely. This video is 2 years old and I'm sure you're writing much better now, but just for sake of it, at least give some emotional investment to make the viewers understand what you're conveying, like "Here in this scene where Faramir and his men were charging into the Orcs, into certain doom, with the beautiful, haunting song by Pippin about journeying through the shadows and night to contrast".

    My personal rating:
    1. The return of the king (epic ending and when I cry, the film is good, also good battle)
    2. The fellowship of the ring (gives the films a good base)
    3. The two towers (I loved the battle but the rest is a bit long)
    4. The second hobbit movie until the dragon dies (that's really good but should have been in the first film)
    5. The first hobbit movie (the most interesting because of new characters)
    6. The rest of the second film (I liked the greedy gold thing that was fine, but I don't remember much else)
    7. The last film (no emotional ending, I didn't care for anything and the battles were not as good balanced as in the lodr films)

I completely disagree about Smaug being "real". I felt like I was watching a cartoon. I didn't feel like they learned much since Dragonheart back in 1996. He still looked fake and plastic and utterly unbelievable.

The ghosts in the third lotr movie was a turn of. To over powered and to green. And the hobbit movies also lacked a sense of being real. With that i mean, you never feel they, the hobbits, dwarfs etc are under any real threat, they can jump down a mountain and still live. Legolas jumping around in the most unatural way, makes him look like a non mortal.

I feel in the lord of the rings especially in the second and the last one their was to many battles and to many character they try to add in. That's why I love the hobbit trilogy because it is the beginning of the the hole trilogy. The hobbit was write before the lord of the rings. So if the hobbit was made before the lord of the rings then after I may of liked the lord of the rings better and to they had some weak characters in lord of the rings like frodo all he did was Wine and not able Defend him so instead he had t ok have some one elses to defend him and I just didn't like that and poor Character develop again in the lord of the rings.

I've watched all these movies once and thats all I ever will need to watch them at least for now. They are way way too long.
Hopefully they make a sequel trilogy similar to Force Awakens, Last Jedi, Rise of Skywalker. They are doing the Prequel series on Amazon Prime so hopefully that sparks a sequel trilogy down the line…
