As a Tabla player myself, he and his father are the gold standard for us. It does not hurt our fingers because we are not using the nails to play, and the "hits" are extremely light but need to be made with just the right amount of power to produce the sound.
The thing about sh. Zakir Hussain saahab is that he is the best living tabla player on the planet hands down. The facial expressions you witness during the video are proof of the level of mastery he has achieved, the ease with which he is playing those notes and variations clearly shows that he's not even thinking about it while playing the piece. Hats off.
In Classical Indian Musical Instruments learning there are 7 exams/7 years, which gives you like a basic diploma in that instrument. But like any other skill or trade, it takes life time of a practice to become Master of Skill/Trade. He has been playing Tabla since his childhood and has decades of practice. Which is why he Grand Master of Tabla, his father held same title too !! :-)

Yes, fingers do hurt at initial phase of the practice...but you get used to it by the time. Fun fact the center part (black circle) is made of Led - so will hurt 😅 but it's fun when you get used to it. By the way Ustad Zakir Husain is maistreo ! Best in the world ❤️

Music in India is not about money or fame, it is an art and a passion. Nobody seeks the fame, but to gain the ability to adore the sounds, and enthrall the audience however large or small. Like you would go to school, these musicians, and singers practically start from birth. It is like the social culture of India to understand your trade or art. This unfortunately was misrepresented as a class system, or caste as the British called it. However this was not hereditary, you chose you path in life to create the best of life using the skills and passion that were within you. Indian culture is mch more intense than people realise, and this was something that happened for thousands of years.

We Indians call him Ustaad Zakir Hussain. And while taking his name we hold our ears in respect, as if we're being sorry for taking his name. That's how much respect we have for our guru-jans. It'd be great if you pay him respect while naming him by touching your ears too. And I used to play tabla when I was young, still got the rhythm now. No the hands and fingers don't hurt cuz after practicing for 6 hours, your palm becomes so hard that if a tabla player slaps someone, he goes straight to ICU.
