    I was born in one of the Pacific islands. On Sundays everything closed including shops except the bread shops. No one allows to work on Sunday except the doctors and nurses.. because Sundays are preserves only for God. Everyone go to church. Us catholic we go to the mass in the morning. Sunday school for children(study the catechism) choir practice for adults. 5pm Adoration in the church. At home family rosary before bed, Although we pray the rosary every evening before bed time.

      I was born in Minnesota pre-Mall era. There was no place to shop on Sundays- everything closed. It was a more peaceful time. Being with family and time at “the lake.”

      It was the same for me on Sundays in Seattle. It was wonderful. Bakeries were closed on both Sunday and Monday. Most people in my neighborhood were Irish Catholic families of seven or more.

    My husband worked rotating shifts until his retirement. The mill was open 24/7. Technically he had 2 Sundays off a month. But one of them he was coming off a 12 hour night shift. I am glad he is retired, however there are still many who support their family with these types of jobs.

    This is a great topic. Part of the problem I find is flying to return home on Sundays with the airlines, sports events and restaurants as another person mentioned below. I try to fly back on Saturdays or Mondays but it’s not just that easy. The other issue is when one of the spouses tries to be practical and do all the grocery/misc. shopping on evenings and Saturdays and just can’t do it because of other reasons. It’s frustrating.

    Why did Catholics move the Sabbath to Sunday? The 7th day of the week is Saturday.

      SSPX just released a sermon on Sunday’s. In it they say if what you’re buying will be consumed on Sunday (I.e. getting a coffee after mass), then it’s fine to do. Do with that what you will…

    As a first responder it’s a challenge, on Sundays and holy days we should our best to avoid work (take off work on holy days) and try not do your job on Sunday

      Luke 6:9 Then Jesus said to them, 'I put it to you: is it permitted on the Sabbath to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to destroy it?' As a first responder, nurse, doctor’s fireman, and police officers are essential. Even the priest work on Sunday and Holy days, the point is there are exceptions. And you my friend are saving life, you are doing Gods work. Go to Saturday vigil are late Sunday when possible.

    Friday sundown to Saturday sundown is the Sabbath, rest during this time. Saturday vigil to Sunday sundown is the Lord’s day, celebrate and work joyfully during this time.

    Sunday is the first day of the week. Saturday is the seventh day and it is the day God says it is the SABBATH. The Bible says we ought to OBEY GOD rather than man.

    My late wife used to forbid me to mow the lawn on Sunday because our neighbors across the street were Christians. I believe she felt that they might be scandalized. Plus, if you don't work on Sunday, you may need to castigate yourself for the superiority you may feel about your pagan neighbors who do. You may feel humility on this account!

    How about church musicians? Many are practically abused with many Masses and long days to offer music for worship? Priests will often require that directors lead four or more Masses on Sundays.

      Easy solution......the TLM has low masses and high masses. High mass has music, low mass doesn't.

      The music glorifies God. That is not work in the sense of distracting themselves away from God

      This is why Gregorian Chant has pride of place in the Mass. No cantor. No musical director. No organist.

      Thankfully I'm at a parish where there are only two Masses on Sunday, but for many years I had three. 14 years ago, I was at a church (university parish) where the schedule was 10a, 5p, and 9p.
      But the hard thing for me as a church musician with a family is finding enough time to spend with them, keep the house in order, and fulfill the precept of rest. We sometimes have Saturday morning to early afternoon together prior to the evening Mass, but if there is a funeral, a wedding, that wipes time together out and leaves only Sunday afternoon.

      @cameratamusic6705 This is a good question. As a professional musician for over 20 years, I had to discern this myself. I personally could not separate my professional focus from simply being a musician glorifying the Mass. My mind would ultimately be less focused on Mass and more on music so I had to decline performing at Mass. With that said, this has been spoken of frequently within the Church's history and is justifiable, even if done for remuneration, within the charitable context of glorifying the Mass.
      Regarding the general situation that you are mentioning. It would be on the priest and director to discern that for each parish. Each musician should prayerfully discern this for themselves. Thanks for watching and joining - John

    I just go by what God's word, the ultimate authority, says, "The seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God." Exodus 20:10. “We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday.” (A Doctrinal Catechism, Peter Geiermann, CSSR, 1957 edition, page 50).

    • @joyousb3404
      @joyousb3404 Месяц назад

      By what authority did this transfer take place? You need to ask yourself?

    • @hudiburgh
      @hudiburgh Месяц назад

      @@joyousb3404 The papacy changed the Sabbath to Sunday to win more converts from the pagans in Rome who worshiped their sun god on Sunday. When the early church became corrupted by departing from the simplicity of the gospel and accepting heathen rites and customs, she lost the Spirit and power of God; and in order to control the consciences of the people, she sought the support of the secular power. The result was the papacy, a church that controlled the power of the state and employed it to further her own ends, especially for the punishment of “heresy.” They admit they had absolutely no Scriptural authority from God to do so.
      “Perhaps the boldest thing, the most revolutionary change the church ever did, happened in the first century. The holy day, the Sabbath, was changed from Saturday to Sunday. ‘The day of the Lord’ (Dies Dominica) was chosen, not from any directions noted in the Scriptures, but from the church’s sense of its own power…. People who think that the Scriptures should be the sole authority should logically become 7th Day Adventists, and keep Saturday holy” (Saint Catherine Catholic Sentinel, May 21, 1995).
      “Sunday is a Catholic Institution, and its claims to observance can be defended only on Catholic principles…From beginning to end of Scripture there is not a single passage that warrants the transfer of weekly public worship from the last day of the week to the first.” (The Catholic Press, Sydney, Australia, August 1900).
      "Reason and common sense demand the acceptance of One of the other of these alternatives: either Protestantism and the keeping holy of Saturday, or Catholicity and the keeping holy of Sunday. Compromise is impossible." --The Catholic Mirror, December 23, 1893.
      “If Protestants would follow the Bible, they should worship God on the Sabbath-day. In keeping the Sunday, they are following a law of the Catholic Church.” (Albert Smith, Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, replying for the Cardinal, in a letter, February 10, 1920).

      @michaelmcguirk396 I'm just a curious person that enjoys seeing how people tick, especially on how religion impacts their thinking and interactions, I'll quite possibly watch how a Hindu is influenced or controlled by they're religious thoughts. I often watch christian ones as being from that culture it's more understandable, the different christian denominations and the vast differences in social behaviour between them is to me fascinating to observe, part of my journey through life I guess.
