    Actually it wasn't even a bait. It is simply true that 8 month old devices are not supported as far as this most important feature set is concerned. This is a fact, no matter what the reason for it is ... they are simply not supported. I love the 24 GB RAM example of OnePlus.❤ Another aspect: Apple and the sheeps repeat that Apple has been working on AI features for years, and that they are not following others such as Samsung. But this leaves us with two options only: either Apple is lying (which is the actual option), or Apple did equip the devices with less memory intentionally to milk their buyers even more (which would be even the worse option).

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  3 месяца назад +2

      It's like folks need to believe that Apple just came up with this AI idea in the last six months, and they aren't working a timeline 2-3 years out.
      But also, the DOJ case against Apple DIRECTLY references Apple executive messages about how they're deliberately trying to slow improvements on their products. Gotta force those trade in deals somehow...

      Or just choose the reality.. A16 is almost a 2 year old chip, which means designed nearly 3 years ago.. so way before the AI crap.. and if you add that their on device AI use 4,2GB memory, and they already stopped support the 2GB models (iPhone 8) with their newest iOS.. so if the OS minimum requirements is 4GB, and you add 4GB for AI model, you get the min requirements of 8GB.. if you can run the 4GB on device AI model on 6GB device, that means without the 4GB AI model the OS capable to run on 2GB RAM too.. and no, it's not running on 2-3GB (iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus) models..
      But this suden RAM requirements jump is a rare case.. they also gived upgrades for their 2GB models for 8 years (2015 iPhone 6s still got the iOS 15.8 what released with the iOS 17.1, and the diff between 2015 Sept and 2023 Oct is more than 8 years.. you still get the OS update, it's only one part of that won't work.. btw half of the users asking how they can turn off the AI, so not everyone will be unhappy if they don't get the AI..)

    Definitely agree that there is massive double standards in the tech press. And ironically Google is rolling out Gemini to everyone at the same time that Apple is limiting it to select devices.
    Is it a RAM issue or genuinely the fact that the current chips don’t have the necessary LLM cores required? Or both. Either way they could give everyone OpenAI at least. But I think they’ll take it slow instead because it’s a privacy minefield.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  3 месяца назад +4

      As far as I can tell, unpacking a model like Gemini on ONLY 8GB of RAM can cause issues supporting the OS and UI.
      Someone more knowledgeable than I will have to confirm that, but I don't believe there are significant NPU differences between the 8 and 8 Pro.

    • @LivingLinux
      @LivingLinux 3 месяца назад +4

      When you are concerned about privacy, you shouldn't use OpenAI in the cloud, period. Apple is just talking BS about protecting your privacy. Did you know that those "suggestions" in the App Store, are probably mostly personalised adds? And a company pretending to protect your privacy, should never analyse your pictures or sell personalised adds.

    • @xmlthegreat

      @@LivingLinuxthank you for sharing this. I've been thinking, if they have an LLM, either they bought it from Facebook or OpenAI or whatever, or they trained it on their own dataset. If the former, then definitely the datasets contain lots of private and copyrighted data. If Apple trained the LLM, then what is Apple's dataset, one wonders...

      Not a great argument. I will hand it to you that when most of my family have problems with their iPhones, they come to me even though I primarily use android, but they reason why they came to be is because I am the tech guy in the family and they have a tech problem. What you are saying is akin to saying people who eat McDonald's and love McDonald's are not "food" people, they are definitely eating food, aren't they?
      I'm so tired of gate keepers making it a us versus them thing. Who cares if I use a galaxy s24 ultra and my mom uses a older iPhone 12 pro max. You don't need an NPU for AI, but you do need it to run AI tasks fast, within a limited power budget. I mean, you can generate images with Stable Diffusion XL (without being limited to certain styles) on something as limited as a Raspberry Pi Zero 2. You just need to wait several hours. When memory is limited, use smaller LLMs. The answers will also be shorter, but I have seen them run on 4GB devices.

    Google did create tensor chips claiming better support and features to bepassed down. But ive seen over time that even simplest features like pro mode when they introduced it, were not given to older and non pro models which makes no sense. Ofc they took a lot of time to introduce such a simple feature available in almost any other android phone camera. But when they had it out they had to limit it like that ? Made no sense. Its not just about this. Google has been software locking features a lot more these days. Other companies do that too. But even with the tensor trade off, youd expect such features to also come through better than before.

    • @TamasKiss-yk4st

      They used the bare minimum RAM because it's constantly drain your battery.. you can never turn off the RAM, or it will wipe the content.. and because of that, it's stupid to stack the RAM more like needed, doubling the RAM also means doubling the power consumption in idle/standby too.. so do you want to sacrifice 1-2 hours of battery time for more RAM? Or do you want even heavier phones because 20% bigger battery is also extra weight on the phone..

    Ram is certainty an important hardware aspect that should be noted when speaking about, and this part is key, "on device llms." Many operations Google currently offers are not completely "on device". This is why in order to operate features such as Magic Editor, you have to have an internet connection. Hell, you can't even use Gemini without an internet connection. So if Apple is being honest with Apple Intelligence and most of their operations will function directly on device without needing cloud service, then yes, ram is a more important aspect. Just throwing this out there, leaks have suggested that Google is touting 16gb of ram in their next Pixel devices. So hopefully as Google Gemini continues to mature we'll see a Gemini Nano being more on device capable and not just relying on cloud based architecture.

This results in a chorus of Apple loyalists, including tech reviewers on RUclips, defending their chosen brand. Your review, which questioned Apple's AI prowess, seems to have sparked a change in their thinking. Honestly, from using Androids with NPUs since the early Huawei experiments, there's a LOT of cool stuff we can do with that compute power. For the heavier models though, the issue is always going to be RAM. I think the 15Pro will be "good", but if we get a RAM bump in the 16Pro, we'll know Apple is turning the screws on planned obsolescence. If the 16Pro has the same amount of RAM, then I think we can believe they really are crafting an experience with longer expectations of support.

      It's the same deal with Windows Recall right? You can now find CRAZY good deals on AMD and Intel machines BECAUSE they aren't going to have all the AI bells and whistles. But if you dont want windows recall...

    Juan, I have recently bought the 14 Pro and it's obviously disappointing to be left out of Apples AI with this device, but hey, whether it's Apple, Samsung or Google, you pay for what you get. I wouldn't want AI in my device if it didn't perform up to scratch, so I'll just have to fork out and get the 15 Pro if I want the AI when it comes out in September.

    I have no idea what AI is. Is that deep fakes or people talking to imaginary friends? All I know is iPhones can play resident evil for PS4 and they will replace your battery for $69. Samsung and Google won't do that

    This is much like Microsoft lurking on your AI computer, doing stuff on machine and if need be using OpenAI.
    But when Apple does it's less creepy because they've already manipulated and restricted the life out of you it's "innovation" 🤣🤦‍♂️

      Well, a bit more structural differences going from Tensor 2 to 3, but it's still kind of annoying that Google sold us on the idea of their own chip "doing AI" (they literally called it a TENSOR), but they fell behind MediaTek and Qualcomm NPU performance pretty fast...

    Crazy part is, I think this highlights the question of what is consistent of an OS update when key selling points and features are excluded? It's harder to frame that for myself b/c there are real hardware limitations that justify the end of the support unless we reel back expectations.
