      @theeman7309what exactly about saying “their body” when referring to a living person or warning that you are about to see and hear about people dying is an “engagement thing”?

    • @theeman7309

      @dysfunctionalaf because it makes people want to comment and talk about it more, which gains the video traction in the algorithm.

    • @jayesimond9301
      @jayesimond9301 Year ago +123

      @joselinee8597 He was likely in a daze from the sheer force that devastated his body in mere seconds, unable to comprehend what just happened to him, and passing out from rapid blood loss. He would have never survived any surgery. The type of surgery he needed to save him is so rare that even nowadays, let alone back then, it is hardly ever completed successfully in time. That procedure was to amputate his body at the waist line, removing legs, pelvic & hips bones.

    • @TheEmpressEmbodied

    • @texasred2702
      @texasred2702 4 months ago +32

      I doubt he was conscious for long or comprehended the gravity of his injuries. He was in a highly disorienting spin, then slid for about 5 seconds. If you've seen the unedited video, he sat up briefly--probably the last of his adrenaline--when he came to a stop and then promptly passed out. With that much blood loss from the iliac and femoral arteries, I'm surprised he lived long enough to be transported to the helicopter.

    13:44 the fact that Gernot survived long enough to make it to a hospital with both of his femoral arteries shredded and his legs essentially detached and THEN to survive several hours long surgeries and blood transfusions before his body FINALLY had enough, is really a testament to his incredible athleticism. That kid was a warrior and his body must've been in peak performance condition and he must have worked harder than we can imagine to get to that point. He would've ruled the ski world and been a legend, I truly believe that.

    The worst part of Gernots injuries is he was concious long enough to realize he's badly injured. His pelvis wasnt only broken, both his legs were basically twisted and torn from it, tearing both femoral arteries. His suit was really the only thing keeping them attached

      @Jekama51 he didn't pass out until he came to a stop though. He was trying to stop himself from moving with his hands at the end. He was likely awake during the whole actual accident. It wasn't long, but I'm sure he felt something and knew something was wrong.

    for those morbidly curious about Gernot's accident, its....not pretty. (TRIGGER WARNING: DESCRIPTION OF HIS WOUNDS FROM THE RECORDING) He literally left a trail of blood. you can see exactly where his leg was pracically torn off his body, only being held on by his ski suit. its bewildering he was able to even sit himself up after, even thought it was just for a second. his right leg is clearly gone, its limp, clearly broken and only moves as he slumps back down. after 6 surgeries he passed, and the management for the race ( i think) refused to pay for his bils. only giving in and paying when the literal government pressured them to.

      Maybe they think if they are careful enough they won‘t get hurt again? I loved skiing ever since I was 5 and never went a winter without it. I can confidently say that i was a good skier. One day I made the mistake of going skiing on a slope that had way too many (inexperienced) people on it (eff overtourism) and a guy just fully slammed into me from behind. I fell and it seemed as if I had just slightly injured myself but actually I can still feel the pain sometimes, 3 years later. In haven‘t been back. I used to love skiing so much, but I am so afraid of going back now. I know that the same thing could happen again and there is absolutely nothing i can do about it. I wish slopes were only open to people who have learned basic skiing and the rules for slopes. My guess is that these athletes are convinced they just need to get even better and nothing will happen (I don‘t agree though). o maybe they just love the sport too much

      Drug addicts do it all the time. Accidentally overdose, and go right back to drugs when they get out of the hospital. Even when told they won't live another year if they don't quit, they keep on doing drugs until their death. Very dedicated to their extreme activities.

      He never felt any pain, he didn’t even properly realise what happened to him and he never did because the last time he lived was before he took that turn, he was in too much shock and adrenaline and never regained consciousness which is relieving but more sad because he will never know what happened to him, he just took a turn, hit the safety net and that’s all he knew, he was too young to die

    Noticing a pattern with the safety nets and fatalities for Nick Zoricic and Gernot Reinstadler. Combing that with the steel support beam that took out Nodar Kumaritashvili, it’s *VERY* clear that padded surfaces are the way to go for safety in extreme winter sports like this. The nets requiring metal poles is just too dangerous

    • @gr3yh4wk1
      @gr3yh4wk1 Year ago +186

      I think even hitting a padded steel pole at 90mph would have made literally no difference. The track should have been extended so the poles were not exposed at any point

      Any physical sport has dangers. When you participate in these sports at such a competitive level, you know, understand, and accept that this may be the last time. But the passion, determination, and desire to be the best pushes through all fear and makes you push yourself. Not everyone will understand why people risk their life intentionally to break a record or to be the best at a sport. And that's ok, there will always be people that have the passion, and talent to want to go further.

    I would easily say Gernot's death had to be the worst. I have seen the full video and it is quite graphic. He is literally conscious up until you can see him fall backward and just lie there motionless. I cannot imagine the absolute agony, and terror that was coursing through his body in those moments.
    Hitting the barrier at full speed would have been bad enough, but one of this stupid skies got caught on the fencing just long enough that the pure force of him impacting the fence then basically being thrown, cause .. momentum. Was enough to basically rip him in half from below.
    He slides and drags along the snow leaving just the biggest trail of blood and what I assume to be either parts of what used to be his private area or potentially even intestines just smeared along the trail. He tries to lift himself up, only to find he is doing the full on splits, he cannot move his lower half at all and then he just collapses backwards and that's the last you see him move for the rest of the video.
    The trauma his body sustained was just way too severe to survive. He lost way way too much blood, way too quickly. Even if the surgeons happened to save his life, he would have been no doubt permanently disabled if not also disfigured down there. The only thing I could hope for when I was watching the video was "I really hope shock took over instantly so he at least didn't feel everything that had happened to him." . . ." I hope he was jarred enough by the impact he wasn't actually aware how horrifically injured he was before passing out." . . . which doesn't sound very good, but considering what had happened to him, and knowing he had died. At that point, as painless as possible is the most you can hope for.

    23:41 I remember hearing about that. People were angry at us Canadians for changing the safety standards, but that's just the Canadian response to accidents. If you run a stop sign and get into an accident, Canadian officials will put up a bigger stop sign. If you run it and crash again, they will put up an equally large sign on the other side of the road. If you run it and crash again, they will put up a sign warning you there are stop signs again and put up a red flashing light over the intersection. It's just what we do.

      @lawrencescht6145 what a stooped argument. why are professional football players required to wear helmets? They're all very good at what they do! Why do race car drivers need helmets? They're also very good at what they do! They wear them because it would be stupid not to. And before you say (no They're required too) yeah, they're required to because it would be stupid not to.

      @ethanmetcalf9752 i think its stupid also, but ur comparisons dont make any sense. football players are required to wear helmets because they constantly tackle each other and hit their heads against others all the time. race car drivers wear helmets because their sport is much more dangerous than skiing and is way more unpredictable.

    The Gernot incident is truly awful amongst the awful tragedies here firstly it is believed that he remained conscious during the ordeal and I read somewhere that apparently the surgical teams had never encountered such catastrophic injuries before and didn't know where to start.....you have to feel for them facing such odds, truly terrible.

    I remember watching the skiing competition that year, and Gernot's accident was burnt in my brain forever. What an awful way to go. I was in many junior competitions at the time and hit a barrier at around 125 km/h, breaking both of my legs the next year. The first thing I thought was his accident. I remember watching my thighs folded in 2, and despite the pain, I thought "yeah it's not that bad."
    I hope he didn't suffer for too long. I never did skiing after that. 🇨🇵

    • @ryer9646

      This video and the comments just seem crazy to me. The entire thing reeks of some guy just wanting to make a scary unsettling video about people dying, without really actually giving much of a shit about doing so in any way that's passably respectful (see the various puns and whatnot... "Things went *downhill*". Shut the fuck up). On top of that, as you said, fucking silent hill music? Really?
      Its pretending to be a respectful video about the stories of the people involved in tragic accidents, but it's undercut by the reality that it's just a video about people fucking dying, with the occasional joke and horror music thrown in on top.
      And then many of the comments are praising the videos quality and sensitivity towards the subject and it's making me wonder if they saw the same video.

    • @iclynnx

      @ryer9646 Honestly, in my opinion, it's a bit of a mixed bag. Silent Hill has a nice soundtrack that is subtle and isn't, you know, the royalty free "spooky oOOoo" music the YT library provides. And background music often makes a video feel less empty than if it were just a voice. But yeah, the research could have been done better, and the tone of the video could have been less "this is scary" and more "this is tragic". I think the Silent Hill soundtrack is fine for that direction. But the red text highlighting certain words is kinda tacky. The "downhill" statement could have been unintentional, if we're willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

    Good research on each accident with enough details to be informative but not too grisly. The only thing I could suggest is to get rid of the fake scream and be more considerate with your wording in some cases. The scream is just unnecessary and seems disrespectful to the victims you're talking about. Also I noticed some insensitive wording in a few places that could be taken offensively ( 9:05 is an example ). I don't want to seem like I'm nitpicking; I genuinely enjoyed the video and think your channel looks promising. I'd be interested to hear anyone else's take on the video btw. Good job overall!

    Those "safety" nets don't seem to be very safe, since hitting them at normal racing speeds is fatal. You'd think it'd be safer to just not have nets. Obviously it would still be dangerous to fall off course, but hitting a tree or tumbling over terrain doesn't seem to be any more fatal than hitting those nets

    • @Mafiaconsi
      @Mafiaconsi 9 months ago +16
