See, but what you have to also understand is that this tragedy was huge, not only for the obvious reasons, but also because of the political fallout. The President of South Korea and many high-ranking politicians tried to cover up everything. Anybody that spoke badly about the government was blacklisted and back then, BTS was a small group that risked everything. They were speaking against their government, suicide at the time, and this was not the only song that talked about it. Am I Wrong was another song that heavily criticized the government and could have cost them their careers. Recently, a journalist did an interview with some of the families of the victims and discovered that BTS had actually gone and given their condolences in person to some of the families and also donated money to the survivors. None of us knew. They never spoke about it. But they did it because they thought it was the right thing to do. This song holds a very special place in the hearts of both BTS & ARMY, but also the country of South Korea. It just amplifies everything that BTS is and stands for, and knowing all of this just makes me prouder of being their fan.

I don't disagree at all! but i also want to point out that this tragedy happened in 2014 and this MV came out 2017, after the president had already started being impeached. The support of the families in 2014 could have hurt their career but this song was not as risky as the government scandal was mostly already very public (hence the impeachment).
I dont want to downplay anything about this song (because it is DEFINITELY commentary on the tragedy and the government at the time) but I also don't want incorrect info spreading of this huge tragedy.
Edit: reread your comment and I think you were talking about the support in 2014 being very risky. Sorry for misreading!

@@miraaranel no no thank you! I should've mentioned other songs that criticized the government from their early years to avoid the confusion. I brought up Am I Wrong since that song came out after the scandal with the Ministry of Education and like a few weeks before the JTBC report

@@breea3426 Am I Wrong is an absolute MASTERPIECE. I think Baepsae was pretty poignant too, especially with all the blaming that was getting put onto millennials at the time for the declining birth rate. I love when they come out with these unexpected political jabs (are they even jabs? they are more just telling it like it is in a way that points out the hypocrisy) in their songs - they are such intelligent and classy people.

@@miraaranel yes yes!!! Everything about Am I Wrong from the lyrics, to the message, to the choreo --even Jimin's amazing high note --makes the song such a masterpiece. Severely underappreciated in my humble opinion.

    • @gembil
      @gembil 3 года назад +6

@@miraaranel yes this particular song wasnt that risky. But the one thing they did that was very risky was the fact that by that time there was a huge blacklisting that the government did to public figures including musicians who supported the protests of the family towards the government. And bts didnt care about any of that and continued to show their support for the families by visiting the ceremony, comforted the families in person and donated 100million won for the cause (10M from each members and 30M from bang PD). And then they continued by writing the song Am I Wrong which was broadcasted on music program a few times (the lyrics and the choreography clearly showed their protest to the government) and finally by releasing spring day in 2017 even tho the president was alrdy been imprisoned, to remind everyone to always remember this tragedy and keep the victims in our hearts.

  • @gmnsai
    @gmnsai 3 года назад +403

articles just started to come out recently on how BTS actually not only donated but visited the victims families & how those families have supported them immensely since then (and praying for their success). This was incredibly brave of bts to do since at the time the government was blacklisting those who spoke out about it and since BTS’ were still only beginning, it could’ve been career suicide. Hence the meaning being hidden within Spring Day’s mv.

    they are handsome.
    their powerful vocals.
    their amazing choreo.

    work ethics
    and their personalities.
they are MORE than a "boy band"

If you’re interested in more of their politically charged songs (that are not emotionally heavy like this), you should check out “Am I Wrong,” “Baepsae,” “Anpanman,” “Not Today,” and “Fire.” The last 2 have music videos with captions, “Baepsae” has a great dance practice, and “Anpanman” has some great live performances. “Am I Wrong” has some live performances available, though many are shortened because in the wake of the Sewol tragedy, the SK government tried to silence any media about it, especially things that were critical. However, BTS performed the song anyway, risking getting blacklisted. Obviously, some channels were afraid to air it, though, or only aired some of it. It’s a really great song, and the choreo (like in “Baepsae”), is also making a strong statement. I will say also there are lots of references and stuff in these songs so Doolset will be your friend 🙂💜.

After the disaster, there were reporters and journalists going to the High School, wich students died in the ferry, and it was SUCHA awful scene at the School. There were whole class rooms with empty seats and flowers on the desks. It was basically entire high school that was on that field trip that day, and what they left behind was an empty School. Those videos from there really made you realise the scale that this happened, I mean almost 300 students and teachers.. It was heartbreaking...🥺😟💔

not just the MV but the choreo also has a meaning and pictured the story very well even tho it's simple and clean ! they released the song years after the tragedy wich really helped the survivers and the families in the time when they though that everyone has forget about them😔when the tragedy happened bts donated and even visited the victimes (media just annonce it recently after years and years)! even tho the song represent the tragedey but it's also about everyone who lost someone in his/her life 😥 RM get inspired from his own story and in suga's verse the story he talked about it's the same story as one of his songs mixtape about the lost of his friend after he took a wrong way and start using and selling drugs 😑 so basically what make this song special is not just them writing about tragedy from afar No they triend to remind us about the lost of those youngangels through their experinces of losing a proche and let everyone thinking about the victimes but at same time thinking about their own lives and the people who were their but now they aren't and that's also what gets people (splly korean citizens not Army or bts fans) stuck to it and keep it in charts every springs, winters, autumns and even summers since 2017 this song never leave the korean chart because it's legendry and as youngi (suga) said she's a ZOMBIE 💓💓💓

After watching BTS'S Spring Day music video and watching explained videos, the footage from one of the students cell phones was in my recommended. I thought it was from a survivors phone maybe showing the steps that the teachers, captain and staff were taking to ensure these kids stayed safe but no. These kids were joking and thinking help was on its way then there came a point where they realized they were abandoned and were video tapeing their goodbye to their parents. It was one of the most heart breaking things I have ever watched. I can't even imagine how those parents felt. To be honest I wanted to turn it off but felt it would be disrespectful to do so. I'm a parent myself and it made me really think about how I need my kids to know I love and support them.

There is a documentary about thiy tragedy, i think its around 40 min long. There you can actualy see how bad everything was. From the way media, politicians covered what was going on. There are many filmed clips from students that were inside, you see how scared they were, then the outside footage where you can see students knocking on the windows unable to get out (yet no-one helped them)...that is just part of it. Maybe its best to watch theory of this song made by an italian army (she explained it so well and added some informations and footages from the news, documentary...) They sing the song so beautifully live (choreo in their dance practice vid is beautiful too) and only recently mentioned its connection to the sweol ferry disaster publicly in an interview - they didn't explicitly say it before when it first came out, but its an anthem that has helped bring awareness to the issue on a global scale.
Its still a powerful song calling for us to remember those we have lost and hope for better days to come. The Queen (Spring Day) lives on in the charts to this day!
This piano version especially will ALWAYS leave me bawling by the end of the video.

BTS had to be vague about this song because they could have legitimately been cancelled for this.

The queen ❤ im really happy you watched this video and took it to heart. BTS are really good for talking about serious issues but hiding it in a pretty package. So it's easy for us to miss unless we look up the lyrics and their meanings

See what happens when we put aside our prejudices, like SUGA said, and give their music a chance? Most of their songs have a deeper meaning and/or a very meaningful message. I must have gone thru every article, interview, documentary (including cellphone video clips taken by those who perished) after I watched the explained video. It took me three days to research. And I bawled every single day. Now, just hearing the intro can get me teary-eyed. I hope to visit the site one day and pay my respects.

Don't be sad. Think of it as honoring those who were lost. Every time this song is played, they are remembered and the guilty are not allowed to forget. Also, BTS songs may sound upbeat, but there are a lot of hidden topics in them. I always enjoy BTS explained by a Korean. Those videos always explain what phrases mean in Korean and it puts a different spin on the song.

I almost didn't watch this reaction because it makes me so sad and angry, even after all these years. I'm so glad the captain and his crew got caught because what the fuck. It pisses me off so much. I even made the mistake of watching the video footage shot by the teenager's on the ship that dive crews had been able to recover. Hearing them beg for their lives, cry that they didn't want to die, and constantly question if they should leave but "the captain told us to stay put" while KNOWING that every single person in that video later died an hour later.... it hurts so much. I'm glad I watched your reaction though, but it always puts me in such a bad mood.

This is probably a weird comment but I think it could be important, so here it is: at 1:52 and other points in the video there is a short beeping sound in the background. It sounds exactly like my smoke detector when it's low on batteries.
Do you have any smoke or carbonmonoxid alarms close by that you might need to check?
I'm sorry for bringing it up, I just worry D:

Am I Wrong, Baepsae, and so many other songs that criticize society and the government is what makes me really respect bts. Theyve been doing it since their debut, back when they were a small ass group with little to no support if the gov blacklists them. We only found out recently, that back in 2014, they visited the famillies of the highschool kids with donations and condolences. Under the gov at that time- a risky ass move to do as small time artists. This song really was intended to comfort the country, which is why its still on music charts in korea 4 years release

Side note every artist who spoke or talked about the tragedy or visited the survivors or their families has been blocklistd by the government bts back in 2014 have donated and visited personally their families but we only found out about last year idk what would've happened to them back then anyways south Korea is really a strict country and bts have multiple songs that criticize the government specially the school system
Ps the song have never left Korean chart since it released back in jan 2017 till today it's the longest charting song in Korean history

also something to note is that things like this are not allowed to talked about like this which is most likely why they did not explicitly mention the tragedy in the mv. artists could get literally the blacklisted for talking about such a heavy topic especially since it also involves the government.

We/Armies are alllll here for AnYoNe willing to learn what BTS conveys in their music!
They had to be mysterious to make this song denote specifically this tragedy because many who spoke out were publicly “blacklisted” by the government.
But citizens knew! And this song has NeVEeR left the charts , it is called their Queen 👑 of songs and allows NoOne to Forget what happened!
