    Rastafarians...believe that emperor Haile Selassie, Ethiopian king, is a messiah sent to jamaica. The reason for them to think so was; at time there was drought with no rain in jamaica. emperor haile silassie flied to jamaica. And interestingly rain come down, as he stepped jamaicas land So Jamaicans have a deep love for Ethiopians because of that. And most of them don't wear shoes here in Ethiopia thinking it is a holy place. Almost every reggae song has Emperor Haile Selassie, Ethiopia, Ethiopian flag, a lion since emperor haile silassie was know as ''king of the lion''

      Well explained

    • @Tsedekeable
      @Tsedekeable 3 года назад +13

      Further reason is that Emperor Haile Selassie was a pioneer of PanAfricanism and African Union which coincides with the vision of Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican Activist, who was also promoting African Union and the return of all blacks to the motherland Africa. Emperor HaileSelassie allowed Jamaicans to Come to Ethiopia and he even gave them free land called Shashemene where Jamaicans have been living for Generations till now.

      And the name rastafarian too it came from emperor Hailesilase name which is Ras Teferi

      @@SWAHILINATION My two brothers above have explained it very well. The religion RasTafarianism by it self comes from layman name of Emperor HaileSellasie. His birth name was Teferi Mekonen, and as he was the heir to the throne before he was coronated, his noble title was "RAS" which in the Ethiopian monarchy system is equivalent to Duke. Hence the name "Ras Teferi".

    Asali, the reason you find reference to Emperor Hailesillassie (Ras Tafari) in the lyrics is because Jamaicans have a religion called Ras Tafari. Yes, Ras Tafarians believe in Emperor Hailesillassie and they call him Ja (God). Once the emperor visited Jamaica. At that time there was a drought and they had no rain for many years and when the emperor arrived it started to rain. Since then Jamaicans considered the emperor as the messiah. You can find similar references in many reggae songs including Bob Marley's songs. Emperor Hailesillassie even gave a place called Shashemene, Ethiopia to Jamaicans. Now, many Jamaicans live in Shashemene. You can find a lot of information about the link between Ethiopia, Ras Tafarians and Bob Marley as well.

    Rastafarian believe Emperor Haile Selassie (whose name was Ras Teferi Mekonnen before coronation as emperor), between 1930 and 1974; many regard him as the Second Coming of Jesus and Jah incarnate, while others see him as a human prophet who fully recognised Jah's presence in every individual. Ethiopians , unless they follow Ras Teferianism, don't believe the same. But they love Rastafarians because they respect our land which they consider as Holy.

      I grew up rasta and knew Vernon Carrington aka Prophet Gad (the founder of the Twelve Tribes of Israel - the predominant branch of Rastafari), personally and attended his funeral in Jamaica; you wrote the most accurate description here, although I would advice emphasizing that only a small minority of rastas (~8-10% I'd wager), a branch called the Bobo Ashanti, believe that HIM Selassie was divine...pretty much everyone else just recognizes that he is a descendent of King David from the Bible, but definitely not Jah/Jahova/God/Yahweh etc..
      For the majority of rastafarians, there is no difference from common Baptist Christianity aside from the Ethiopian/Jamaican/panafrican cultural associations, an emphasis on reading the Bible a chapter a day, every day, and of course, an emphasis on "repatriation"/"immigration" to Ethiopia, not as a requirement, but as a means towards collectivism to survive a prophecy (Prophet Gad aka Gadman) which warns of an impending globalized system of control and of a global cultural, political and economic catastrophe and a variable "fall" of western civilization; for example, Gadman "prophesied" in the late 60's, i believe, that there will come a time when oil is scarce, normal people can't drive their cars, supply lines shutter, chaos, etc. So many rasta people are taking today's current events, attributing it to that, and have been moving to Ethiopia in droves as of late.
      Apologies for the long text.
