We really enjoyed Zadar, we stayed near the Mali Arsenal, right by the city walls. We found the city convenient for our excursions to the islands, took a couple of boat tours. The nightlife was fun as well - and just like you we got lost in the alleys in the evenings!
Going in August can't wait the weeks are not passing fast enough still trying to choose which island to visit for a day trip would appreciate any suggestions from Ireland

Zadar is great, good home-base to travel around as well.
