Hey Linus, I'd like to see a guide on how to generally set up a mouse with CPI and sensitivity in general. I think this would be a great video to show newbies how to start, and maybe help pros rethink the way they set stuff up.
jtpetino What I understand about Polling Rate is like this... when your mouse detects movement, it sends a "count". But it doesn't go directly to the computer, instead it's put into a "buffer" on the mouse where the counts (and other actions, like clicking) are stored. They are stored here until the USB port checks the mouse, and reads all the data. How fast the USB port checks the data is the polling rate. And yes, it's the USB port checking the mouse, NOT the mouse sending data. Mouse drivers talk to the OS and ask it to poll more or less often.
MustSeto Actually polling means the CPU continuously asks the mouse if it's got something to say... if the mouse were to send a signal whenever necessary that would be interrupt-driven. (for example PS/2 keyboards use interrupts, USB mice and keyboards use polling)
linux my hand is big-boned and it gets sweaty on my mouse during long gaymen sessions. should i go for a mouse with ice white lights or ice blue lights for optimal hand cooling?
SimonBraat i don't care if you're a fan of it, those red LEDs will burn through my palm faster than an overclocked nvidia card through slick's gelatinous mop
Simple. Water cooling -> for when you want the best cooling with terrible noise production. (so only the really high end ones) although if you really spend a lot of money you can make em quieter again.. but not worth all the money Air cooling -> everything else.
What are you supposed to say in "as fast as possible"?... Bigger rads offer more cooling but don't fit in all cases. Higher FPI also offers better cooling within the same space but is creates more noise. Tubing sizes don't really matter so get whatever size you like the look of and pressure optimized fans are usually better on radiators.
Watercooling is purely for looks and noise reduction unless you know for a fact your CPU/GPU can handle higher clock speeds and temps are limiting them.
***** have you ever seen how a ball mouse works? it is actually an optical infrared censor with an infrared led on the other side of a wheel with slots cut into it, each time it sees a bar (it gets a little darker) it counts a "click". they can compound it in a similar way to modern optical mice to get multiple counts per click, but your statement really has nothing to do with the dpi of a mouse, physical damage isn't going to change what the mouse is trying to do. like with any mouse it depends on the mouse what the dpi/cpi is, there are a few ball mice way back there that got as high as a hardware simulated 600dpi, at the time they were pretty competitive with early laser and photo optical mice. with ball mice though in general you are looking at physical cpi of 200 or less with a hard coded software layer that duplexes it.
motosheep Most modern optical AND laser sensors will work on either surface now. In fact, it seems the laser sensors currently being manufactured are more affected by the surface--they have more acceleration on cloth. Modern opticals just get a slightly higher LOD on hard surfaces. IIRC modern opticals can even track on glass now, but don't quote me on that.
B/c my optical mouse don't work on wood.It wants patterned cloth, it is quite jumpy. When on binder paper it needs to have dots to track. Gigabyte M6900 Gamer- just a shitty mouse?
motosheep I've never heard of a Gigabyte mouse. Not a good sign. It does also look like it's using an older sensor. The sensors I'm talking about are recent-ish.
I use 9150 dpi so if it’s under 12000 dpi I can’t necessarily get it because if I go down it makes movement slower and if I go higher it will make it harder to be comfortable with
I wish they would do a video on this showing the actual DPI (CPI) of several mice and going through and checking accuracy, I want to know the best way to compare mice.
I don't know about you guys but I find myself being more accurate with really low dpi settings. When the difference between moving ten degrees left and a full three hundred and sixty degrees is only a couple of millimetres on your mouse pad, I don't see how you can aim accurately.
***** CPI isn't the only thing which controls the overall sensitivity. The game's sensitivity value also affects it. In fact, theoretically a higher CPI with lower sensitivity setting is better. But because of the way CPIs tend to be artificially inflated, just setting a mouse to its highest CPI is still a bad idea. Besides, lowering that sensitivity value gives diminishing returns, and I'm confident we're at the point where we have high enough legitimate CPI that and additional benefit will be negligible.
Well yeah, that's not surprising. Some gaming mice even come with DPI shifts. Holding those down will lower the DPI and will make sniping in FPS games more "steady" if you need a lower sensitivity.
You should use the highest native CPI of your mouse in any game that has a 3D camera. Shooters, action games, 3D platformers, what have you. More counts per inch means a smoother camera. In fact, having a very low DPI will make games like CS:GO, TF2, Quake etc. almost unplayable because your camera will skip entire rows and columns of pixels, making far away targets virtually unhittable. Sucks that everyone always forgets this really important detail. High CPI, low in-game sens = Smoother camera. Low CPI, high in-game sens = Pixel-skipping, jumpy, stuttery camera.
I'm so glad I watched this video. I was prepared from some sponsor segment but I didn't expect that Milkshake cover! LOL. Someone needs to bring that cover up and maybe start it as a YT short. Haha.
TheRockstarr33 Mine goes up to 12,000. I use it on 12k literally every day. It gives me way less cramps in my wrist, but when I need really low DPI, I just use the sniper function, programmed to go down to 200. Feels like I have to drag it a damn lightyear to move a pixel.
So is my Logitech G502 that I actually use on 12,000 dpi is less accurate then a lower setting? I thought this mouse had the most accurate senser on the market...
The G502 actually probably is the best mouse sensor ever, but yeah at 12k it's not going to be as good as it would be on a lower setting. But if you compare it to another mouse at the same setting, the G502 will win every time. Really wish they'd use the darn sensor in another mouse shell though, the G502 is so heavy >_
It may be accurate, but imagine running that sensor over a speck which it can't fully comprehend as a surface, your cursor will fly. That's what Linus refers to, too much of one thing can lead to noise, too much detail wihout proper analysis (sensor), and much more room for reading errors, such as the example cited above.
Mostafa morsy I simply got used to it over a few days of getting it. I kinda feel like if you bought a mouse with a really high DPI you might as well use it. I play on a 1080p monitor only too lol.
One thing he forgot to mention is that a higher dpi (dots per inch) can also be interpreted as pixels per inch. Which in case that most FPS pro gamers run most of their games on 1920x1080 16:9 for better performance and frames per second. Less pixels=less dots per inch. And frames per second is limited by how many hz your monitor can display, whether it be 60hz, 144hz, or 240hz, it will definitely make a higher improvement on your gaming than a mouse or a keyboard.
That guy from fractal designs is a genius marketer, instead of asking you to praise their products, something that people forget and don't care about, in fact most probably close the video where the advertisments start (including myself), this guy associated the brand with your dance, hoping people will talk about it, maybe become viral. That's kinda smart.
The mouse is 400 DPI and I use sensitivity on 4/5 and acceleration on 1/2 depending on what weapons I play. It moves fast enough 4 me and is accurate enough
Oh yeah and cod is really hard ? Give me a break cs:go has no competition right now on the competitive side of the game, there is no match for cs:go in any way right now, no game will take it's place in esports. If the game was skill-less it would not be an esports game.
Your point is invalid, cod has aim-assist, grenades do instant kills, recoil is smaller, recoil while walking has no difference of while standing still, knife always instant kills, no complicated movement and mastering of the map required, you get perks, the game is way more easier and unballanced, you can literally walk around instant killing everyone, not to mention there is a killstreak award, no knownledge of weapons required. All I mentioned is opposite from cs go, which is more competitive and skill headed, whilist cod is headed towards casual scrubs that cant aim properly. A true pro fps player that comes from cs:go/ other skill demanding games will always dominate in cod.
This is actually an eye opener for me. I Used to play 5k dpi/cpi and a really low mouse sensitivity, then lowered it to 2000 dpi/cpi. I think that I might lower it to 400-600 dpi/cpi since I've watched this video.
Hey this is like super late but what DPI do you use? I also cant bring myself to move more than just my wrist and fingers cuz moving my arm too makes me innacurate
+watsyurdeal It is completely dependent on how far you want to drag the mouse to move X degrees on screen in game, anywhere between 600 and 1200 is where most people will probably have their settings, while some people will prefer 200 and others will prefer 6000! +blitzball420 NO! That is not the same as a mouse with actual DPI settings!
The funniest part of that sponsorship is that I feel more inclined to visit their website now than I ever would have upon watching some random ad read.
Javier Gonzalez Jr also if you assign your left/right click to the keyboard the mouse control will be a lot smoother, i personally do this in Zbrush and Photoshop because clicking while dragging tends to be a lot shaky.
No. Did you watch the video? He said higher DPI is *NOT* more accurate. Think of DPI as a secondary sensitivity setting. Just don't put it too high or it might cause innacuracy/inconsistency.
Why the majority of CS/Valorant pro players rather set the mouse at 400 dpi * high in-game sense? What is the advantage of having 400 dpi * 2 in-game sense over 1600 dpi * 0.5 in-game sense (both equal eDPI)? Is that a bs that 1600 dpi delivery a better smooth and fluid crosshair control? thank you.
When I was hardcore into gaming, I had a profile on my mouse that allowed me to turn the DPI up and down by pushing one of the auxiliary buttons. It gave me an edge for sure.
THANK YOU for making this video. I've had this argument with so many "experts". I use two 21:9 LG monitors for development and it's ONLY useful because of the length change in monitors. Dead on.
I was wondering what the CPI button on my mouse meant, and my mouse sometimes doesn't move the pointer much at all but sometimes I can't even control it and click on what I want, even though I'm not changing sensitivity, so I guess I'm hitting this button accidentally and that causes it. Finally an answer that helps prevent gaming issues! Great outro too XD
Oh no! Because of what he said, I lost all respect for Linus too. I must like his post so others may notice it too. I should probably unsub too. This guy is right. Hail Andrew Brown , king of the internet!
DPI is a perfectly acceptable term btw. A pixel is in concept an infinitely small "dot", thus the name. CPI is just "Count (of conceptually infinitely small dots) Per Inch".
Just bought a 8,200 DPI gaming mouse during that Amazon Prime Day sale.2 days ago. I had no idea what it meant. I only bought it because it seemed high end, had great reviews, and only cost $20, not $97 as it normally does. I still like using mice with laptops.
Thank you fractal josh. My next build will use a fractal case just so every time I look at it, it'll remind me of all the ridiculous things you've sponsored linus to do. 100% serious (not sarcastic)
I'm not sure if it's a common thing, but when I change the color of the lights on my mouse, the sensitivity also changes. Blue is 800, Green is 1200, Pink is 2000, and Red is 2800 DPI or "CPI"
Great video as always, providing conclusions that don't help me at all. Would appreciate if he just said, if you want for gaming, use this, if you want for work use that...
This is a video made to explain what is DPI (and CPI) not "Mouse buyer's ultimate guide 2014". The only thing that really matters is that you have a mouse under your hand that you feel comfortable with.
Is there a difference in the width between CPI and DPI? Because I want to have the exact same sensitivity as a pro player and he usees 400 DPI and I only can setup for CPI and not for DPI. So I wanna know if 400 DPI and 400 CPI actually is the exact same sensitivity. Thank ya!
what do you think is more precise low sensiotivity: high dpi(e.x 3500dpi) and low sensitivity(e.x in csgo 0.1) or low dpi(e.x 400) and normal sensitivity (e.x in csgo 1.0)? i've been using the first method in FPS games and works really good
My recent deathadder 2013 just broke, so I bought a mouse with all these adjustable dpi settings. I tried standard turning it up to 2400, and decreasing in game sensitivity and Windows, and experimenting with so. It's disgusting, it feels like there's loads of mouse acceleration, almost as if the mouse is on ice. But once I revert back to normal 800 and increase sensitivity in Windows/games, it feels perfect. I don't see what all the hype is around DPI, standard seems to work perfectly fine and it really IS more accurate.
Linus, my mouse is a 500hz mouse. It performs worse in CSGO in a way than my cheaper office mouse of 50hz dpi. whenever I move my mouse too fast, it stops moving. The 50hz mouse gives a bit of stutter, but my mouse itself never malfunctions and therefore I can always keep moving it, it never freezes.
*puts mouse at max CPI*
mkay, let's play some CS:GO
*moves mouse half a mm and does 6 360's*
good for trick shot montage lololololololol XD
+Some Weeb That is about right for pro gaming ;D
+Carbon 12 pro gamers almost always use 400 cpi or 800 cpi
SpaceDorito I'm doubting this, Since i'm pretty sure they use 1080p monitors.
they use 1080p monitors but most of them on lower resolution and on 4:3 tho they use 400dpi and really big mousepads xD
Most people didnt stay till the end... big mistake
thanks! i wasn't going to stay either.

Now that you explained DPI, could you explain Polling Rate on a mouse? I really can not understand it yet..
jtpetino What I understand about Polling Rate is like this... when your mouse detects movement, it sends a "count". Mouse drivers talk to the OS and ask it to poll more or less often.

eughh using 400 cpi is horrificly slow. I'm going back to 2500.

Speaking in cs:go settings
Oh yeah and cod is really hard ? Give me a break cs:go has no competition right now on the competitive side of the game, there is no match for cs:go in any way right now, no game will take it's place in esports. If the game was skill-less it would not be an esports game.
Man, there are many ways cod is way fucking easier than cs go, and overwatch has taken the fast paced title now, and I say that as a tf2 player
The boys in the yard enjoyed it.
Dat ending.... You're awesome Linus!
This is actually an eye opener for me. I Used to play 5k dpi/cpi and a really low mouse sensitivity, then lowered it to 2000 dpi/cpi. I think that I might lower it to 400-600 dpi/cpi since I've watched this video.
4:35 this is what made me get the concept in mind thank u linux
i keep my wrist planted in one spot and just use my fingers to move the mouse. probably laziness. very accurate in shooters though.
That's just a different way of gripping the mouse. I do the same thing.
Same here, finger tip grip ftw
Depends on the shooter. If can do 180 with just your fingers/wrist in for example counter strike, then that's way too high.
Hey this is like super late but what DPI do you use? I also cant bring myself to move more than just my wrist and fingers cuz moving my arm too makes me innacurate
So......how much cpi do I need for playing at 1920x1080 resolution?
I would assume 400, right?
just turn up the sensitivity in your software/windows
+watsyurdeal you'll be better off with 1000 or 1600 cpi probably. but 800 is already ok for most games.
With 400 CPI, you would move the mouse an entire foot to move it across your screen.
Sock Puppet *facepalm*
we've got a dumbass...
Just wait for milkshake gif profile pictures on the forums.
The funniest part of that sponsorship is that I feel more inclined to visit their website now than I ever would have upon watching some random ad read.
The end was most important...
I just bought yesterday TeckNet USB Wireless Gaming Mouse 4800DPI...
and waiting for delivery...is it good?
lol 8,000 CPI... I just got a new mouse with 16,000 xD
mines 19000 XD can't be precise at 5k+ and 7+ is just a uncontrollable hell XD
@@FAILoZOFF LOL mine is 32000cpi.
Linus... you should have said over 9000!!!!! CPI...
It's over 9,000!!!!
Defiantly went and checked out Fractal Designs after this video.
Damn sponsors can do anything
Man I wish I had the money
This is the beat geek..tech...channel ever...all about tech...I luv you...
so dpi is sensitivety
Jeff LaFlare I saw you in a discord server
I guess
That's what it seems
so its more useful for design stuff like photoshop since it can move more acurately per pixel
thanks for sharing that, helped bring my perspective to a new light
Javier Gonzalez Jr also if you assign your left/right click to the keyboard the mouse control will be a lot smoother, i personally do this in Zbrush and Photoshop because clicking while dragging tends to be a lot shaky.
No. Did you watch the video? He said higher DPI is *NOT* more accurate. Think of DPI as a secondary sensitivity setting. Just don't put it too high or it might cause innacuracy/inconsistency.
Josh from Fractal Designs is awesome!
That milkshake skit was toooo funny! Not the dance or the singing, he said "grown" man, hahaha killer!
Resolutation. Well done, editing person.
2:46 osu?
yes xD
2:47 Resolutation? Lol
Pause at 4:30
that's my wallpaper now...
All praise the godess Linus
Why the majority of CS/Valorant pro players rather set the mouse at 400 dpi * high in-game sense? What is the advantage of having 400 dpi * 2 in-game sense over 1600 dpi * 0.5 in-game sense (both equal eDPI)? Is that a bs that 1600 dpi delivery a better smooth and fluid crosshair control? thank you.
When I was hardcore into gaming, I had a profile on my mouse that allowed me to turn the DPI up and down by pushing one of the auxiliary buttons. It gave me an edge for sure.
THEN WHAT IS THE DAMN POINT OF CPI OR DPI IF IT JUST INCREASES YOU SENSITIVITY??? WHAT IS THE MEASUREMENT FOR ACCURACY THEN???
Lennies. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
hand
there is no measurement of accuracy of mouse you noob. It depends upon the user
-.- how can i know how much accurate the mouse sensor is? do i need to move it a meter? a centimeter? a nanometer? how small movements can it detect?
Dami Bang yeah, like you can move a mouse in nanometer, pure noob.
my dpi is over 9000!!!!!
+Hiraku Satoshi mines 12,000
Tfs here lmao
04:34 Linus does everything for money ... hilarious :D
I don't care how experienced you are with computers. That ad spot shredded every last piece of respect I ever had for you. Unsubscribing.
you must be new here
ThiefOfficial1 and trying hard to get some likes
oh no! everyone wanted you to stay :(
Oh no! Because of what he said, I lost all respect for Linus too. I must like his post so others may notice it too. I should probably unsub too. This guy is right. Hail Andrew Brown , king of the internet!
*AndrewNoobTips*
That was a good presentation! Now at least I know what DPI or CPI means! Thanks!
Linus: 8000 CPI
Me: we have 20000 CPI now linus
Subscribing to your channel, your videos are amazing, thank you very much keep doing a good job!!
There's no difference... that's the point.
Thank ya!
what do you think is more precise low sensiotivity: high dpi(e.x 3500dpi) and low sensitivity(e.x in csgo 0.1) or low dpi(e.x 400) and normal sensitivity (e.x in csgo 1.0)? i've been using the first method in FPS games and works really good
linus this is why i respect your videos so much. i think i w,ill watch so much more. thank you. dfavid from port alberni
The 50hz mouse gives a bit of stutter, but my mouse itself never malfunctions and therefore I can always keep moving it, it never freezes.
glad i've stayed in the end.. i don't do that often but man i feel proud
