Hey there! If you want to learn how to build a career writing film & game music, check out my 6-week Composing Career Bootcamp: zachheyde.com/composing-career-bootcamp
Mockups are a great exercise in so many ways. Composition, orchestration, MIDI programming, workflow. This was one of the first pieces i ever did a mockup of back when Hollywood Strings was the real deal. You know what, they still are 😂
I wish I could say the same about the new Hollywood Orchestra Opus strings... man, they're out of tune. The legato isn't too bad at least. I don't regret buying it though.
@@TheUnderscore_ The Legato is really good in my opinion, what seems really out of tune is the pizzicato in the violins and violas, couldn't use that doubled with woodwinds. But the rest of the library is really good, especially the brass and the 18 violins patch.
@@mishakallivroussismusic Agreed. The legato's definitely above average, but compared to legato-focused libraries, it's not nearly as good (the transitions can be very... outstanding). I'm loving everything else though, definitely a worthwhile buy.
Awesome break down. I play the Oboe and I always start my practice with scales and long notes and then the solo from the second movement just because it is one of the nicest oboe solos ever. Keep in mind that Rimski wasn't all that fond of the Oboe at all.
Wow, thank you so much for this video!! I'm glad that I have access to this quality of content this easily!! Man, this is really special!! Also, loveee this piece!!
Great video, extremely useful and inspiring! I've a question about dynamics: what are your points of reference in order to properly translate p/ mf/ f etc. score indications for each instrumental section without messing up with the balance between strings and winds?
I generously give likes for any kind of statement like "I was gonna do this for myself, but I thought if I recorded it, it might be interesting to others as well" :P Thank you, much appreciated!
I also love it how you're doing it by ear - some of us don't have a proper musical education (mostly, we can't read musical notation) and makes us feel a lot less inadequate if we started dabling in music purely on talent and learning music theory on a NEED to learn basis :D DAWs have sort of turned this whole mechanism around, making notation sort of a second thought. It's fine, but when you're trying to analize, it's a hinderance... but you can still do mockups through careful listening :D and learn that way.
this is the right way. Forget “orchestration tips” on youtube. It is all about relating timbres to musical form. not showing “you can this you can that”
Hi, I just discovered your channel and this video is *so* helpful. I’m scoring a short student film now but as soon as I’m done, I’m going to start practicing orchestration as you’ve recommended. * The mouthpiece you’re using: are you using that to add CC11 data? Thx!
@@ZachHeyde thank you for your reply. Can it be easily added to Logic Pro X, and can I reassign it to CC11? What is its name? Actually, I’m sure I could using a cable switcher in the environment or with one of the MIDI plugins. Ok, answered my own question. All the best!
Great video! I think there are a few mistakes (please correct me if I'm wrong) 1. The first notes of the viola are different 2. The bassoon part should be an octave lower 3. The horns part is actually for trombones and tuba? Nonetheless very inspiring I'm just a beginner getting into orchestration
Ciao Zach una domanda. Cos’è quel controllo volume con i fede che utilizzi per dare espressione al suono? Aumenta poi diminuisce specialmente sulle note lunghe. Come si chiama? Si può comprare? Grazie mille e complimenti
Hey Zach, very interesting video. I've personally never studied any score and I was wondering out of curiosity if you knew any source (website ?) where we could find film/videogame scores for orchestra ?
Summer!! Thank you, hope you've been well 😁 I just picked up "Creative Orchestration" and its FANTASTIC, really different from other books I've read. Highly recommend!
@@ZachHeyde Thanks Zach, hope you've well too. I lost my gmail account and haven't figured out a way to stay in touch (can't believe I'm saying this in the 21st century lol). But please know that I'm always following your works here! ;D
I actually chose some books before I got your recommendation. And I just checked my purchased list, guess what, the first book I picked was "Creative Orchestration"
Hey Zach..how you doing?...congratulations for ur channel...i have a question, something that call my attention....do you allways use note on,quantizing like u do in this video?...it call my attention cause i give to it a very very high value when is about a realistic feel.....ill like to know ur opinion plese...thanks!
Hey there! Yes I do, though not everyone does... I find it easier when giving scores to copyists, and most VSTs these days have some variance in delay which makes them sound more realistic and imperfect, even WITH quantization :)

I’m still new to the mock-up game and subscribe to ComposerCloud. Do you all have any opinions about the Hollywood Fantasy Orchestra?
@@mishakallivroussismusicI noticed that about the viola pizz but assumed I wasn’t hearing it correctly. Thanks for adding your comment.
Wish I had the ability to write something as good as that in such a short space of time. Amazing! Great video.
Fantastic, Zach. Your content is fantastic.

Great piece to study orchestration from. Korsakov's own book on this is worth the read as well👍
It would be awesome if you make a video about setting up different templates for different approaches to writing/orchestrating.
Good suggestion Falagh!
Very instructive and very well explained. Thanks
Really great, thanks for making this
Very good idea :) Great vid again !

If you don't know the other ways to use instruments, your pallet will be pretty standard and unremarkable
Hi Zach, love your content! it's super helpful. Can I ask for some books recommendations to study orchestration pls? Thank you!
Check out Rimsky Korsakov's book, and "Creative Orchestration" by George McKay :)
Loved the video Zach. Could you recommend more Orchestra Scores we should study to learn the same way?
He did Holst's Planets in another video. Quite easy to pick up a score for it.
Awesome!

yeah I also found that 'horns part' is actually the trbs on the score after following him
And what is the mouthpiece you are using on your headset for some instruments??? I'd never seen that before.
That's the TEControl Breath Controller!
@@ZachHeyde Fascinating. Can you explain briefly what it does and what advantages it provides over simply inputting notes using a keyboard alone?
Hi Zach, Just like to passing by to let you know how much I enjoy your channel :-)
Thank you!
Very good video! Thank you so much! is it a new orchestral template?
Thanks! I'm always updating my personal template :)
@@ZachHeyde I bought the one you made, and it seems to me absolutely perfect. I'm adding my libraries to it and it works great. Thank you!!
Hi Zach, long time composer but new to DAWs. What is that thing you are putting in your mouth? Is it replicating breath in woodwinds and brass?
Why did you not play with the right timbre (vst)?
Ciao Zach una domanda. Cos’è quel controllo volume con i fede che utilizzi per dare espressione al suono? Aumenta poi diminuisce specialmente sulle note lunghe. Come si chiama? Si può comprare? Grazie mille e complimenti
This is really great! Thank you! May I ask...what VST, patch-ins or plug-in do you use? And what DAW?
Thanks! Logic Pro--you can find the VSTs I use on my website 😁
Hi ! :) 4:28 what is this thing you are putting around your neck ? 🧐

I was wondering the same thing.
Thanks! It's the TEControl breath controller!
@@ZachHeyde Cool!
thanks Zach, I love the videos, keep it up!
Hey Zach ! I was wondering where you got the score for this piece and if there was a website to download public domain orchestral scores ?
Check out IMSLP.org !

Hey Zach, what is a good site to purchase sheet music from? Most sites I can find only have sheet music for piano
