      Very interesting ! It is kind of training in new environments on a higher level . ANd it brings situations where You can't just slow down with simply bringing the dog back to a more familiar environment , You need to react on the situations . That helps many dog owners ( me included ) to act better in certain situations .

    My 1.5 year old dog got out of our yard for the first time (and hopefully last time!). It was about 15 minutes before I realized it and had no idea which direction he could have gone. I walked down the street calling his name and after about 5 minutes (7 or 8 houses away) he came running out of some bushes and straight to me. Your constant reminders of how important it is to always praise when your dog comes was life saving. He thought coming to me was more exciting than his adventure at that point. Thank you!

    I like this series. I just finished watching the Chop story and as someone who has been studying canine behavior for over 20 years and is 1&1/2 years into a rehab of a fear aggressive dog, who is a level 4 biter, whos issues were CREATED by improper handling by past owners and past trainers who were uneducated and used aversive methods, I wanted to THANK YOU for clearly explaining in your videos why the aversive methods don't work. There are too many trainers and others in the dog care industry (such as vets, technicians, groomers, shelter workers, etc.) who use methods that actually create aggression and/or escalate it due to lack of training in behavior. THANK YOU for creating this platform to educate!!!!

    I wasn't sure how I'd like this series when it first started, but I'm happy to say I'm loving it so far. It's good to go on your adventure vicariously and see how the dogs react to the small space. It's also fun to see Inertia being a "real" dog (barking at something she sees). Don't get me wrong, Inertia is wonderful and you've done a superb job training her! But it's nice to see that even the best trained dogs are still dogs--not little hairy robots. Too often, I think people expect their dogs to be just that--little hairy robots who aren't really "dogs".

    • @zakgeorge
      @zakgeorge 2 года назад +9

      Definitely. I promise that even the most “trained dogs “still bark when we are trying to relax or do other things! They are definitely dogs! We have to be empathetic and fair to them and let them be who they are!

    I’m loving this series so far! It’s really interseting how the dogs behave in this environment. I do have one question tho: how are you going to work on Veronica’s separation anxiety, since you live in such a small space? Thank you, and good luck on you journey!☺️

  • @HD2Dful
    @HD2Dful 2 года назад +3

    Yes, I definitely love this whole series. Especially the training about the barking. I have a toy size (11 lb) dog who is a very picky eater. Sometimes he eats the treats, sometimes not. He is allergic to several foods, especially chicken and tuna fish, which narrows down the variety of treats quite extensively. He is a wonderful dog, good with children, and is not aggressive at all.
    But he gets really excited (not fearful) when he sees other animals and dogs, and he is definitely afraid of big dark things (and people). And he is afraid of statues and other big inanimate objects sticking up out of the ground, like fire hydrants, statues, Christmas decorations, and garden dwarfs. It would be interesting to see if you could train a dog like that to stop barking so much.

    I was so lucky. The first time I bathe my Frenchie/Boston puppy, she was about 12 weeks old. Like you were doing, I trickled the water and she started drinking from it. I put the stopper in the sink to fill it about an inch, but she plopped right down in it and started rolling around. Now, when she hears the bath running, she jumps into the water and starts playing like crazy. Never an issue with baths. Nail clipping is another matter 😊.

    • @bbycherub2420
      @bbycherub2420 2 года назад

      Oh god, be very careful. Get two crates, put the new dog in a crate or puppy pen after playing with the puppy to tire it out and then let them sniff and meet through the gate/crate. Let them do this everyday but don't let them meet without a barrier until they are completely calm around eachother, once they meet without a barrier I suggest you muzzle the older dog just in case it tries to bite out of jealousy or dominance (one bite can instantly kill a puppy). You should work on training and socializing your old dog before adding a puppy to the mix, your old dog needs to know that he is not allowed to guard you like you're his/her property.

What breed is your sisters dog? Explain to your sister that she can't baby the older dog or praise it for guarding her, it's not guarding out of love, it's guarding because he sees her as his property and doesn't respect her, dogs who guard their owners tend to be the ones who end up attacking their owners because they think they can do what they want because they've never been told not to.

Explaining doesn’t work on my sister, she refuses to listen and says “well how would you feel if you where in its situation” and it’s just ugh. But my puppy is a German Shepherd (9 weeks) and very jumpy, I’ve already started basic training and she is doing very well. @@loafofkitkat7504 Oh wow, I'm sorry your sister is like that, I have a few ideas, maybe when your sister is at work you can try to start training her dog a bit or give it some excersise to tire it out? My main advice is focus on your puppy, German Shepherds are a very strong breed that have a very strong bite and can be dominant, start training him right away and start socializing him. Look up "Socialization puppy list" and follow it everyday, start teaching the puppy to not jump and start crate training him. Try to take him for walks after he's got all his vaccines, walks are very important for dogs. You don't have to let them meet yet, but if they meet, there has to be a barrier between them and your sister can't be near her dog because that will trigger her guarding aggression. Give treats to the both of them when they meet, but as long as you focus on your puppy and do things right everything will be fine.

    When I feed our dog, I make her sit and stay. Once I place the food down I use the "Come" command. I'm thinking that it is helping.

    Hi Zak, What are your thoughts on gentle leaders (leash over a dog’s nose)? We foster puppies & our most recent pups went to another agency to be trained service dogs. This agency uses gentle leaders for their service dogs & we have mixed feelings about this. Do they hurt the dog? We usually stick to a harness for our pups. It makes me sad to see these leaders on dogs… Thanks in advance!!

      I tried using a gentle leader many years ago on a big German Shepherd I rescued who chased squirrels. And there were a lot of squirrels there. I didn’t like it at all because it pulled against his eye on one side. I later discovered other brands that worked on a similar principle but were better because they didn’t go near the eye. Harnesses have now improved with a front lead attachment so I can use them on a reactive dog and keep on my feet.
      I would have thought that service dogs would be well trained enough that a head harness style wouldn’t be necessary.

      I'm not Zak, but I'll share my opinion on Gentle Leaders. I absolutely LOVE them. I work in Great Dane and Irish Wolfhound rescue. We get in dogs weighing in at 125 to 180 pounds that have never been on a leash and have no idea how to walk properly on a leash. A dog that large can pull even a pretty large man around (much less someone like me--a fairly small woman). We use Gentle Leaders with these dogs and are able to walk them as soon as they are desensitized to the Gentle Leader without any problem whatsoever. The ONLY downside I've found about the Gentle Leader is that you do have to desensitize them to wearing the head halter first. You can't just "slap it on" and go. You really want to create a positive experience with the head halter. Take the time to do that and you'll really love it. There are several "brands" and our favorite is the Gentle Leader Brand (don't like the Halti as well--maybe that's just because we started out with the Gentle Leader are got used to it and the Halti just felt strange and alien, almost to us; others love the Halti). My favorite tutorial on how to desensitize a dog to a Gentle Leader is from Jean Donaldson: ruclips.net/video/1wakterNyUg/видео.html. Good luck!

    I'm guessing Veronica's top 3 breeds are:
    Pomeranian for her size and fluffiness
    Chihuahua for her size and head shape
    Border Collie for her markings and mad frisbee skills!
