    I'm an army vet and and army brat. My earliest memories are from Ft. Bliss and El Paso. Biggs AFB was active then and I lived on post very near Biggs and the E.P. Int. Airport. One time we went camping up in New Mex. and I remember asking my mom why I couldn't hear the "roar" in the morning when the sun came up. She was confused. Finally she figured out that living where I did, every morning the jets were fired up!. We always heard a loud roar in the distance. Those B-52's make a bit of noise.

    I wouldn't say that El Paso or Ft Bliss are my favorite places, but i do still dream about them and it's been 41 years since I was there! In my dreams, El Paso usually has natural trees/forests! It is probably a dream for all in EP. I remember everything as it was, and I can see from Google Earth that much has changed, but I would still know my way around. I've been out of the service a long time and my dad is buried at Arlington. Anyone remember the old Beaumont Hospital?

      Drill Sgt, December 1967-69, (pre-volunteer Army), C-2-3, Logan Heights.
      Was 16B20 Nike Herc launcher crewman before that for newly formed 333d Arty, one of 2 semi-mobile Herc units. We trained on Main Post for Basic Unit Training, then when 'combat ready', was moved to McGregor Range until unit desolved shortly there after...THAT was poorly planned! :)

    As a non-hispanic who was born and raised in El Paso his whole life, I can tell you that the city is very safe for its size. The only negative to ever happen to my family personally was one time in 1999, someone broke into my father's car and stole his stereo downtown. That's about it. Last year the city had 5 total murders. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I left for the Air Force because there's pretty much nothing to do there, but the city is safe.

    Always look at the bright side of any assignment. The desert has its own form of beauty. Try to embrace it. Grand Canyon is 12 hours away. Mountains. Sunsets and sunrises are beautiful.
    As far as El Paso is concerned... well, I was stationed there for 2 years and I will say this: best Mexican food anywhere! Lots of great restaurants. The post is pretty nice. Lots of newer housing.

    I'm in Bliss now and the base is really nice with great housing. They have Freedom Crossing which is like the biggest mall I've seen on any post. Yes Game Stop is in there as well. I love the mountain and desert terrains as well as weather. Other than that, I really don't care too much for El Paso itself.

    As far as Mexican food, when I was there, my favorite was the La Paloma on Dyer (in the late 60's and early 70's. Pancho's was pretty good, too, but there were a ton of good Mexican restaurants and that is what I miss the most. Oh, and the weather at night. El Paso nights are great. I am surprised people say that crime is low. It was high when I was there, but I guess not as bad as some cities. There was a lot of inter-racial bs. and there were gangs that would attack you if you were alone.

    • @jimdrich1967

    from my understanding, and crack open a history book if you dont believe me, most of the wars in the history of the world has come from european agression. no offence to euros, but i guess people fail to realize how many wars there were in the years before europe destroyed its self in WW2. and who was there to use its own treasury to rebuild those nations, the US. britain, france, germany, italy, japan and countless more we helped to rebuild. but you bite the hand of our support, we turn a cheek

    @mslimon1221 lol, well considering the fact that your mexican im sure you will REALLY like it here! especially if you understand Spanish. well the only club i know is Romeos.. you might wanna look at that.. i guess the worst thing for you is getting used to no grass. oh and off post. the community isnt really active.. like in neighbor hoods its a little quite. too quite for ME anyway. on post however, is the typical army post thing.. kids walking around at 8:00 pm, old ladies running, you get it

  • @Fallingtear23
    @Fallingtear23 14 лет назад

    @mslimon1221 IT IS HORRIBLE.. coming from fort Campbell Kentucky... there is no such thing as GRASS over here, the sun murders it. the only form of "grass" in el paso is weeds, which is ironic because ALOT of el pasoans smoke weed..and speaking of the citizens of el paso.. most of them are spanish/mexican, and to me, the WORST part, {being a music lover} most of the radio stations are spanish.. i just hate it. also, if you have kids.. there is really nothing fun/productive to do around here..
