its a smudging tool, basically a tightly rolled piece of paper that can vary in sizes from as little as a pencil to as thick as a marker(sometimes) but basically it's just for blending more precise areas of your drawing.

I wish you'd start putting up some tutorial videos. We get that you're talented and well-practiced, but it's difficult to learn anything from watching these (though beautiful) videos. Especially since you approach each portrait differently and never start them the same way twice.
you dont need tuts, just try to understand why he leaves the light parts light and the dark parts dark. If you can't even draw a stick figure start by tracing pictures so you dont get warped faces. if ur using pen, smudging lines (with ur finger, or for precicion stuff papertowels twisted into something with a "sharp" edge, if you dont want to buy art supplies) and erasing can give you nice shadings with good edges and highlights. Try to get the bonestructure right by using lots of lighting and shading (smudge, erase, smudge erase). To get smudgeable lines u need to use pencils with graphite / black lead / charcoal and not ink ( obvious, but putting it out there anyway) and you need to be light on your hand, hard lines wont smudge good. another thing you can do is draw the same thing over and over, sort of to get it into your muscle memory. And really, really try to understand light, look at the subject and try to understand why the light looks the way it does (oily skin/dry skin/painted skin, what kind of light (outside light, colored light, diffuse light), the direction of light etc)
doesnt really matter were u start drawing either, i usually start with getting the shapes of the eyes right, then i move onto jawline, mouth (just the middle not the lips), hairline, eyebrows and so forth. But that really isnt important to you. you need to find out wich way is right for you. And thats about it, you wont get good from watching tutorials on youtube, practice makes perfect etcetc
