  • There's a big chance your keyboard says QWERTY. In this episode of Vox's Overrated, Phil Edwards investigates the keyboard's history.

    If you've ever been curious about typewriter history, the rise of QWERTY wasn't an accident. Typing and typewriters weren't always around, and the inventor of the QWERTY typewriter layout didn't know it would become the standard.
    Over time, however, business reasons and typing education made QWERTY a standard across the industry and, eventually, for the vast majority of typists. Though there are exceptions to QWERTY's domination, for the most part, this keyboard layout remains the default even today.

      summed it up in one. any improvement, marginal or otherwise, when using other layouts would take time and effort to relearn the keyboard along with the fact that if you got used to it and someone else needed to the use the computer, they would be really confused. This is assuming you're a touch typist which is something most of us need to do in today's society. I suspect any visual typist wouldn't have such a problem transitioning, but they wouldn't really see any improvement in speed or accuracy if that is the case.

      From typing like my mother, to becoming a fast touch typist on QWERTY, it took just about a few months in my 6th grade keyboarding class. Although everyone in my class was just as annoyed at having to learn the new style as you are, we all eventually picked it up by the end of the semester. I have no doubt that you could do the same. I think being able to touch type now might actually help you a bit. And while I also don't intend to switch because of convenience, I wouldn't be opposed to it if I was forced to, since it would take maybe a few weeks at most.

    Hey!
    To be honest: I go around RUclips, and sometimes post a reaction about something American and how it is for a Dutch person:
    So…..
    There is a Dutch version of QWERTY. It's the same, but some little things are diffrent like the / and the " are swapped and stuff like that. But nobody uses the Dutch version of QWERTY, because the hardware keybaords in the Netherlands are printed the same way as the ones sold in America.
    In France and Germany they have a diffrent version, even on your phone. French has AZERTY (Don't know for sure) and the Germans have diffrent keys for their umlauts (ä, ö and ü). But I don't know if these 2 versions are actually used.
    Another fun fact, the Greek keybaord is based on QWERTY, so are the Japanese and Chinese keyboard.
    I love languages, so it's not that strange for me to know how to type in diffrent languages.
    People always told me that QWERTY was the easiest/fastest way to type. That's why it changes for diffrent languages. I don't know for sure, but it seems logic to me.

    Maybe there are better letter configuration but at some point you just have to pick a standard and go with it. We should be happy one layout took over. Imagine if keyboards had to come in dozens of configurations depending on which you are used to? Or you start at a new job and they use a letter configuration you aren’t familiar with. Would be a nightmare.

    It is pretty easy to understand why everyone still uses qwerty. Mankind got used to it , everyone expects it , and humans tend to resist change anytime it is possible. Just look at America and the change to metric system.

    If, like me, you heard QWERTY was about slowing down typists, there's a surprising amount of literature debunking it. This paper, from 1985, appears to be one of the more influential ones in the surprisingly large field of QWERTY scholarship (and it helped this video a lot).

      Vox hi

    • @JimCullen
      @JimCullen 6 лет назад +11

      It's not per se that it's about _slowing typists down_, though that's a fairly reasonable simplification of the truth. The arrangement was to prevent keys from jamming, as the article you link states. (Also, I found the archaic use of the term "bully", "bullying optimism" really amusing.) This, in part, means placing common key combinations far apart from each other, which can in some cases cause slow down. A slower typist is also, obviously, less likely to jam. So while it's not per se correct to claim QWERTY is "about slowing down typists", it quite clearly is designed in a way that indirectly encourages less than optimal typing speeds.

    • @JimCullen
      @JimCullen 6 лет назад +6

      Regarding Dvorak, it's also very important to note that its advantages are not limited to speed. Yes, it certainly is significantly faster (as the many converts such as myself can attest) than QWERTY, but far more importantly the fact that it reduces hand travel and balances out hand use means that it is also an inherently more ergonomic keyboard. You're less likely to develop RSIs regularly using Dvorak than you are with QWERTY. In today's workplace, that is *super* important.

    • @alphamarshan
      @alphamarshan 6 лет назад +4

      Jim Cullen I switched to the Dvorak layout for a few months, and I did find it easier on my hands because there is less travel as the most commonly used letters are on the home row. However I wasn’t able to reached the sustained typing speeds I can maintain using the QWERTY layout.

    • @JimCullen
      @JimCullen 6 лет назад

      You couldn't catch up in a few months? Were you going cold turkey and regularly making sure to practise? Perhaps most importantly, did you switch you keycaps around and/or put stickers on the keys or not? Because it's actually widely regarded as a very *bad* idea to have stickers/switched keys. That encourages laziness and makes it easy to learn hunt-and-peck typing or quasi-touch-typing, but delays your ability to truly touch type.
      It took me about a month and a half before I was as fast on Dvorak as I was on QWERTY before the switch. After two-to-three months I had improved by about 20% over my initial QWERTY speed, where I plateaued.

I never did get used to the the z and the y arrangement on the keyboard. I would have to constantly go back and edit my writing to turn my z's back into y's. Like I would write "yellow" as "zellow," or "type" as "tzpe." That's why QWERTY, or QWERTZ, will never go away. When you've been typing nearly your whole life, the muscle memory is there.

Your transliteration said ".ZYXYWVUTSRQPO" when it comes to the white keys, but (as shown in the image) the keyboard says ".ZYXWVUTSRQPO". That means you've incorrectly typed an extra "Y" between the "X" and "W" in your transliteration. :-)

    qwerty is the best thing that happened to computers in an entire century. imagine not just 2-3 ways of doing something but 22 equally popular among the people, it's just madness. The standard is valuable not because it's most convenient or most optimized, but because it standardizes our cooperation, communication and interchangeability of things, people and tools.

      The letters are in the other they are because it's pretty easy to find out what letters are most common in a certain language. Once you have a basic layout and an idea of how people effectively type it's actually quite easy to find the optimal place to put letters within that system. It's however far harder to predict the general keyboard design that optimists typing. On one side you want to optimize for speed but on the other you end up with more errors that way which on type writers without a back key was a massive issue.

    I read (somewhere) when doing research on using the Dvorak keyboard layout, another big reason QWERTY dominates is the U.S. government's acquisition of teletype machines in World War II. The Dvorak layout was actually gaining some traction in the typing world leading up to WWII, but Uncle Sam settled on the QWERTY layout after the U.S. Navy performed some studies on typist speeds. Either that, or "Big QWERTY" performed some lobbying efforts to cement this standard. My efforts at learning the Dvorak keyboard never came to fruition :-(

    • @NotTheGaslighter
      @NotTheGaslighter Год назад

      I'd learn Colemak or Colemak DH (a slightly more comfortable iteration). Dvorak may be hard to learn, but from my experiences, it IS quite strangely designed and.... uncomfortable sometimes because some keys are placed in obtuse spots.... like the I not being placed on any of the 8 home keys, or F and L being in straining locations... as far as I know, Colemak doesn't have any of these issues, Colemak DH, even less so, and its based off of QWERTY so its not a huge transitionary step. You'll learn this not because you want to cut QWERTY out of your life, but simply because its way more comfortable, and that should mean the world to you if you type even 4 days a week... just stick with it for a month and see what you think of it!

      They did. The only reason it's almost universal in America is because the biggest manufacturer(s) made them in that format, and typist classes trained for it. Therefore, it's overrated.

    The reason the cartel chose QWERTY is that most of the companies producing typewriters had already adopted at least some version of it and most typists were already trained on it a result it was the industry standard, The industry needed a standard and since QWERTY was the most common layout choosing it made sense. For one thing, at least initially typing teachers and typists would have had to learn how to use multiple layouts. Also businesses that purchased multiple typewriters and whose employees were already trained on QWERTY were not going to switch to another layout because it would take time and money to retrain their employees. While it's true that DVORAK and some of the other layouts did increase speed an accuracy slightly but not enough to make it worthwhile for companies to purchase new equipment and retrain employees.

    I learned typing in elementary school with Qwerty, but when I began to study French and German I found it far easier to go ahead and learn their standard keyboards as well, AZERTY and QWERTZ respectively. Qwerty is by no means the sole standard but it certainly seems to have gained a place akin to that in English.

    I think it's Qwerty because it makes typing easier. The vowels mostly lie were you fingers stay.m and the letters for 'the' are very close. 'Er' is literally already in order, just like 'as'. That makes sense, right?

    I'm an air traffic controller at one of the busier terminal radar approach control facilities in the country. We sit in front of digital radar displays to talk on radio frequencies and control aircraft movement, and one of the tools we use is a keyboard that lets us edit digital tags on the screen to keep track of aircraft.
    The keyboard I use every day at work ISN'T QWERTY, but is instead a ABCDEF keyboard. and I. HATE. IT.
    I'm a pretty "online" person, and when i first got hired there it took a LONG time for me to get used to it, and even today i find myself looking at the keyboard to figure out where letters are.
    I was told that YEARS ago, (probably the early to mid 2000's), when the facility was undergoing some technology upgrades,
    the controllers there were offered their choice of keyboards:
    QWERTY or ABCDEF.
    Given that a lot of these controllers at the time 70's and 60's babies, and I'm assuming not as technologically literate as younger generations today,
    they chose something that made sense to them,
    giving us the alphabetized keyboards we used today.
    I hope someday we can get this changed. For people who actually type on a regular basis, having to switch formats is a bit of a pain.
    and for the people who DON'T type every day, it shouldn't matter one way or the other lol...
