Security guy was relatively reasonable and relatively clued up. Just needs to fully understand what public means and what it means with regards drones. There is no public property in the UK, just public places. Everywhere is privately owned. So the guideline about only taking off from a public place relates to not being in a place where the owner might object. So the guideline is there to avoid incidents. However, that doesn't stop stupid people, so the guideline is not that useful. Also, the guideline is more appropriate to drones that actually require a proper landing pad such as >250g drones. It doesn't apply so much to tiny drones such as the DJI Neo which can take off from your hand. Banning the Neo would be akin to banning the throwing of paper airplanes.

The line of sight rule says obviously flying in line of sight but then it says or 500 meters, to me, that means if I can't see it, don't go any further than 500 m
What it actually means is you can only fly as far away that you can still see the direction of the drone but a maximum of 500 meters. A DJI Mini will never legally be able to go 500 meters unless you have superhuman vision, but something like a fully kitted out Freefly Alta 8 you may be able to see the direction at 600 meters but you’re still legally limited to 500.
