Great video, fun to watch. Yeah, Siem Reap is a delicate blend of upscale, royal and 5-star resorts with extreme poverty, tragic history and a love/hate relationship with tourists. Visit again soon. Lots of love and tons of respect.
Great video, sadly 90% of the Pub Street and the Old Market shops are now closed due to the pandemic. Many will not be coming back. Kandal Village is also dead now.
@@iamjohnsaboe The Pandemic plus major roadworks have killed many businesses but we are hopeful that things will change for the better soon. Unlike Phuket, Pattaya n even Danang...Siem Reap has the Temples of Angkor. Here's hoping for a better tomorrow for everyone 💕
Newly arrived in Cambodia. Thanks, John, for your informative videos about the capital and regions. Nice to be able to start getting a flavour of the country from you here in my far-better-than-hoped-for quarantine place! I look forward to finding others you've produced.
Fabulous vid ! I just discovered your channel and subscribed. I'm looking forward to viewing more as I may be in Siem Reap within the year for long stay. Nice to meet you.
Hi John, loved this video. My wife (Fleur) and I love Siem Reap and of course the many temples in the area to the north of the town. One of our favourite places to visit in SE Asia.............not to mention the great food at bargain basement prices. Luang Prabang is another favourite of ours. Keep up the great work and we can't wait to travel back there again.
Thanks so much! Hope you and Fleur and the rest of us travellers are hitting the road before the end of the year. Luang Prabang is a favorite of mine too! A little jewel of SEA!
Hello John we hope your keeping well . We are going to cambodia next year . we are really looking forward to thank you for the tip's they were very informative . Kind Regards Sarah and Glenn
Thanks for a really interesting video!! I’m looking forward to travelling to Cambodia and Vietnam once the borders open. Cheers from Vancouver Canada 🙂
Sure I think that’s fine! Try to spend at least 3 days in the ruins. I hope by Easter SR and Cambodia has reopened. I think that’s still their plan-to be open by early next year. Cheers!
Every area you were in was familiar to me except the book store... Did you see the fruit bats in the trees at the Royal Garden??? They have a wing span of about 6 feet and are huge... It sounds like we were first in Siem Reap near the same time... I arrived about March 1, 2015 planning on staying 2 weeks...I liked it so much I extended my visa and stayed 6 weeks... Last year I spent a total of 7 weeks in Siem Reap....Sure beats the foot of snow we got yesterday and the expected high temperature today is supposed to be 9 degrees F.. Thanks for the video/subscribed
Thanks very much for sharing your experience with us. I heard the bats a few times but did not see any. I left SR at the end of January 2015 so just missed you by a month. The slower pace of life and culture is very seductive indeed!
Thanks John for sharing, it's so helpful. What is the name of the place in your clip at about 8:14 minutes? Was it Phsar Chas? Looks pretty for staying.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. How would you get from Phnom Penh to Siem Riep assuming that safety, comfort, and speed were all more important than a low price?
Thanks very much! If money isn’t an issue then of course a flight is the fastest way to arrive in comfort to SR. There are great bus lines that get people from the capital to SR in 6 hours for approximately $15. Cost for a private taxi starts around $65.
Very interesting, Siam Reap looks a real nice place - just booked a hotel for a short three nts stay at the end of August. Just returned from a 12 nts break in Thailand and thought it would be nice to show my beautiful young lady from Buriram- Angkor wat, by the way - how far is it from the centre of the city! Finally, have you ever visited Boracay in the Philippines- It looks absolutely stunning
Enjoy Siem Reap and the Angkor ruins! From the center of town to Angkor Wat is about 6km. Haven’t been to Boracay yet but will definitely check it out one of these days.
Great Video,, Thanks for sharing,,, our favourite hangout was Viva Restaurant,,, Did you ever come across a guy with a cart selling books?,, We met him on our 1st trip. Lovely guy,,, hope to get back again someday
@@iamjohnsaboe thanks,, but different guy,,, the one we met always wore Camo clothes,,, we looked for him on our second trip,, we wanted help out but we couldnt find him,,,anyway,, hope he is still around somewhere,,,, once again,,, love your videos,,, brings back great memories
Bryon Edwards Thanks again! OK I may have run into him in 2015 but didn’t see him around this time. Even with support and training it’s a really tough go for these guys even just getting by. Hope he’s well!
The area you showed looks lovely, exactly what I'd look for as a break from Angkor. Most SR videos show the craziness, Pub Street etc. As I'm around your age, I'd appreciate a day break walking around this quieter area. Is this walking distance from the main hotel area? (Probably won't be staying at Raffles!)
I know how lonely it can be in the middle of a city and how oppressing it can be to be around nothing that is familiar. But look on the bright side: You don't have to put on seven layers of clothing to go out side to shovel snow! Once my dog dies I'm spending winters in SE Asia. Until then I must live vicariously through your camera.
Haha, thanks! Actually I rarely ever feel lonely and it’s surprisingly quite easy to meet people while on the move. I’m also lucky in that on occasion subscribers and my podcast listeners contact me for a meet up if we are in the same town. But you’re absolutely correct that I should never take this opportunity for granted. Don’t miss the winters! Snow looks better in pictures. Thanks again and I’m glad you find the videos helpful!
We lived in Siem Riep for 3 years. Thank you for showing us our lives.
Hope you enjoyed it, thanks!!!
An outstanding video report. Thanks for your efforts.
Thanks very much!!!
I’m pleasantly surprised by how clean looking it is !, I’ve been to a few SE Asian places ❤❤❤
Yes, it’s their crown jewel and most sacred place.
.. good one, john.going there soon.very impressive walk around video.cheers.
Thanks,have a great time!!!

Really sorry to hear that. I knew SR would be devastated but I hoped it wouldn’t be as bad as you described.

That is Le Malraux Restaurant. There are hotels in the same area. Phsar Chas is the old market located in the center of town, it’s close by there.

Thanks very much! That was my intent but I ended up shooting most of it over a couple of afternoons then back to redo a couple of clips.
Go to mondulkiri Cambodia please.
Don’t know if I can on this trip but maybe later in the year! Would love to see the elephants!
Hi,im arriving there in a couple days, just wondering any area that more local, quiet for a single to live, also the price is reasonable.cheers
Yes you can find places like that on Airbnb. They will tell you if it’s a local area.

Southside of the Old Market.
