Isn't it funny the notion of the plastic free shop (and I say this kindly and respectfully) but I was reared on plastc free, 3 onions in a brown paper bag, a head of cabbage..sweets in paper bags, even bacon and other meats were wrapped in brown paper and placed in my mother's rather large wicker basket .we are rediscovering what was done for years and years...how wonderful..and the herbs without a jar ..and just the amount you need ..how wonderful. Lovely work Sean and a lovely journey and stories. Love it. Many thanks....
I feel I have to contribute my lamb soup two cents. I've been making it for decades - my mother's side is British and I learned it from her. I don't use a formal recipe. Brown the lamb first like you did, then brown the onions or leeks and garlic. Add the carrots or parsnips and brown a bit - they don't need to be fully cooked. Add hot water to cover, along with a packet of dry onion soup mix. Pop in a cinnamon stick and throw in a handful of barley. I then put in some cubed potato and I really like dark green leafy veg in my lamb soup, which usually means chopped kale. Simmer simmer simmer. Hint - the onion soup mix and the cinnamon stick takes it to the next level. I realize it isn't traditional, but it is really good.
Came back to this video to enjoy it again. Mere days into living at the Miners Cottage. Simple furnishing, Cawl on the stove, tea and a good chat. Cats playing on the floor.
Hi Sean, recently discovered your channel, and now am playing catch up with your videos over the past 8 months. Enjoying them so far. I'm Welsh but spent 50 years in London. Moved back to the Cynon Valley a few years ago, so lots in common with you.
Hi Sean, I subscribed after watching one of your first moving to Wales videos. There is so much about your journey that I can relate to. Many of us can. Up until about 3 years ago I had a very excellent job in IT. I decided to leave it, sell up and move to a smaller place with my partner. He had made such a good point about me not being able to enjoy the bigger house, due to working every hour there is. It's much too long of a story, but things didn't go as planned and we ended up in a Park Home with our dog and cat. Starting over is a major event. You are making the very best of it you can. And you've done a great job. Using RUclips for updates and sharing your life with others is a wonderful thing. There are many who are stuck and feel they can't make a move either way. We can't forget all the experience we have to offer, all the things we have done. This is our next part of life-which is meant to be the part where we get to enjoy things a bit more. Anyway-this is now a novella! I wish you the best and shall continue to stay tuned! All the best.
Oh my days Sean that Lamb soup looked deliciously yummy. Enjoy every morsels of it! Your room is looking really cosy,an Amber an Topsy feeling right at home.
Lamb stew, my granny cooked it every week. ‘Scrag end of neck’ she used, not seen it for years….She added red spit lentils to thicken and used the biggest pot ever to cook it in. Lasted a few days and tasted better the longer it lasted. I have carried on the tradition but use lamb neck fillet or lamb breast meat and its very healthy. I still cook bake stones (Welsh cakes] on a traditional bake stone and have butter on top. Someone on here mentioned hanging a tapestry on your wall behind your sofa…. I used to have a rag rug, traditionally a rug made of strips of old rags, now that would look lovely on your wall. I miss my gran and mam I have to say…
Hiya Sean My advice is to get an electric kettle pronto because the kettle on the hob method of boiling water for tea will cost you a fortune in electricity. You can often pick up a slow cooker in charity shops - they electric test them for safety. I had one for £5 in BHF and it hadn’t been used. For addition - try dumplings - but make your own rather than buy mixes ! Great videos !!
Sean invest in a slow cooker so much easier with the different settings just put whatever you’re cooking in the pot and forget about it for a few hours. Great video
Thermal cookers are wonderful - after about 15mins on the stove at a simmer you take it off the stove, put it into it's outer shell, unlike a slow cooker it doesn't need any more power, and open it up for dinner - will keep hot for about 6-8 hours. I must try your soup in winter, too hot here now but will look forward to it in July.
Sean, I hope you are as happy as you look now. You seem so much happier than when you were in London. My great grandparents moved from Tredegar to Birmingham apparently by horse and cart to find work in the industrial Midlands. They had a good life but probably not easy. I still have their Bible which is covered in candle wax from the days my Mum and her sisters had to read passages to Great grandad Llewelyn in the dark. I now live in Malvern (it must be the hills!). I love your stories. Sue x
I love making soups & stews as they last ages & yours isn't unhealthy as you haven't added any other fat to the meal only whats in the meat, I love the sound of the buy what you need shop as sometimes you don't want to buy loads of something if your not going to use it. Looking fwd to more recipes & videos of the cats as they are very cutexx
I love your cats! I really enjoyed the chat. Cawl needs glutimates. So that vould be a teeny bit of Marmite, maybe a bit of mustard powder, dulce or similar, home made vegtable stock. Umami.
Hi Sean, what a beautiful cosy experience watching you was. I was feeling a bit low but you have really helped brighten my mood. That Welsh Cawl looks delicious and very soul - food comforting xxx 😘
Hi Sean this is Ken Bain from oldham Lancashire great watching your blog, you seem to be settling in back home in Wales you seem to treat everything in a very relaxed way, you even make me relaxed watching and listening to you,I bet it's great being away from the madness of London, all the very best wishes with your new venture, hope your layed back attitude rubs off on me , the wife would like that ,sure you will soon be all settled in your new home soon keep up the good work,
I'm loving these vids. What a great fresh beginning. You probably know this already but for those that don't ... Cover cardboard with foil (shiny side out) slip behind radiator. Less warmth heating the back wall but back into the room.
Hello Mr. Cameron, I agree wholeheartedly with your process of simplifying and having less items. I live in Los Angeles, and it horrifies people when I tell them I don't own a television. I gave it up for Lent years ago and do not miss it. God bless your endeavor.
Your cawl will be such a delicious and nutritious meal. Yes you definitely need a larger pot but a slow cooker would be a great investment . Great for stew, soups and easy healthy meals. Would love to see the inside of the shops that you frequent. I am so hungry now watching you eat that wonderful meal. Hope you get your allotment. ❤️👍🏻
My parents were from Pentre and we have always made our Cawl with breast of lamb , which we cooked with onions for 1 hour and added the veg half an hour before eating.
Sean, I am so interested in the simple things of your life in Wales , the shops, people, stories and food. That stew looks so good, except for the rudabaga. My mom fixed that when I was a kid, and i found it so distasteful that it would make me hurl. It was the only thing I didn't have to eat as a kid because they knew what would happen if they made me eat it. But I am happy for you that you enjoyed it so much.
Had some cawl yesterday - it's that sort of weather. The recipe you used is pretty much exactly how I'd make it (which is the way I learned from my mother) although I would start the lamb before the veg and I use a slow cooker.
Hi Sean. The Welsh Cawl looks good. Not had lamb for a long time. Going to buy the Echoes of the past by Lucy Thomas. I liked History at school too many years ago. Now I am a lot older, I really enjoy listening to the history of your homeland, your videos are so relaxing, lots of interesting details, so keep them coming Sean and CONGRATULATIONS on all your new viewers. I myself being one of them. Thank you for sharing 😊
Nice looking Cawl Sean. There is absolutely nothing unhealthy about that whatsoever, grass fed lamb, water and vegetables. Just keep an eye on how much bread, but if you did make your own that would be pretty healthy too as you could keep it free of the dreaded additives that seem to sneak into everything these days. Cats looking very relaxed indeed!
It was nice to see this video pop up. I do hope you are finding as much joy in the anticipation of this next step in your journey as I am. Chatting away in your home is very pleasant. We have had a “whole food” store in our town for decades that sells by weight and is plastic free. You can buy everything you need even detergents. I noticed you didn’t add salt and pepper to your cawl. Good on you for not getting a TV. Thanks again for sharing with us. 🇦🇺
I make my cawl with a gammon or bacon joint and I always add parsley, black pepper and whatever root veg is hanging around. It definitely does taste better the next day or even the day after that. The good thing about using bacon or gammon is that the salt in the meat stops the cawl going off and it lasts a few days so you can make a big pan full. Except it doesnt last more than a couple of days because we always scoff the lot as its so delicious. Full respect to you for not having a TV.
I've heard it said, cats like the same habitat, dogs like the same owner. So dogs are more adaptable to change in their environments, cats however struggle! Might I suggest you put the lid on your saucepan as the juice will evaporate! Some of the streets that way have suffered from flooding due to bad drainage, I think "Wales on line" has stories so you should be able to find out 'stuff' 😁
hello hello from AU.....i've become a cook this year - only from youtube. there are SO many great cooks (pros and not pro's) on youtube- my better half is amazed :) cheers from down under
I've just watched a video of Queen Mary taking tea at a miner's family home in South Wales in about 1912. The whole village were overjoyed and it absolutely reassured many local people as Queen Mary was truly a friend of working people.
Have loved watching your move out of London - so inspiring - your house looks v cosy and love to see your cats have settled (they do love a fire don’t they! 😂) - take it easy hope your back continues to get better too 😊
Hi Sean Cawl is not an unhealthy choice at all. It is rich in vitamins, minerals and fibre and is a good source of all the essential protein and carbs you need. Fantastic choice. Love your videos and I look forward to your next one.
We have had this type of shop here in Croydon, Victoria, Australia for quite a few years now. Same concept. You can bring your own containers or take home what you want in a paper bag.
Sean go to Rhondda Cynon Taff council web site, select recycling and waste put your house number and post code in should tell when and what collection is due.
I was born in the valleys Cymer. Left at 14 . Dad was a great cawl maker. And windberry tart delicious 😋 . I do apologise I called you James. In last comment. New on hear. Hubby and I watched your old vlogs last night in bed. Really enjoyed. Especially the one with the Actimel . Drink. Hubby has been drinking them for a year. Now and he has said he's felt much better since . 😊
Wow I remember my mother in law talking about her brother in law going up on to the grieg picking windberries? Being English I’d never heard that word before. That was in the Rhonda as well.
Haa took me ages to work out the refuge collection system when i moved to wales. Your 'home' looks so relaxing. I dont have a tv....i am obsessed in listening to Richard burton 😊X
Ha ha, similar here Jane, I'm often on RUclips watching Frank Sinatra with Dean Martin and Richard B was in a clip the other night. I listen to music on my fone 2. I pay for a TV licence yet am often on my fone instead.
Another healthy variation on your cawl is to boil up the carcass of a cooked chicken for an hour or so to create a stock. Strain and strip off the meat, add your veg and season with salt, pepper and lots of fresh parsley. Continue cooking. Paul's shop in Treherbert is great for no waste : you can buy as little or as much meat and vegetables as you like. Nothing pre packed.
It’s good to have some rest days , moving house is a big stress emotionally and it all affects the body too. I’d love to see someone making traditional Welsh cakes, I tried them once and it took forever!
Amber and topsy look very happy. Your stew looks healthy to me Sean.you need all that healthy food when you are doing all that exercise up the mountain and to keep worm. Amazing what you have achieved in two weeks
I do like the lighting from you heater. Itt gives a lot of ambient shadows and this chit-chat is comfortable on my eyes. I love the idea of a plastic free shop. Years ago our Bulk Barn franchise tried it but it didn't work, I guess because there is still lots of plastic sacks now.
Hi Sean I just subscribed I love your channel only just found you .I'm born and bred in Aberystwyth on the Welsh coast .your channel is lovely makes me feel so comfortable and secure ..you are so natural no put ons ..a true Welsh man .thank you and keep doing what your doing ..Diolch Sean xx
Hi Shaun. Fellow Welshman here; I was recommended your channel a week or so ago and have been catching up on recent vlogs leading up to your move. Looks like you are settling in nicely, and your walks, cooking, and chats to camera are a welcome relaxation for me. Can't wait for the weather to improve to see you exploring out more.
Hi Sean it's nice to see your back home in the valley and looking so well on it. I have a question for you. On reading your marvelous book on the people and the life in the valley what do you miss the most in the people and the changes you now see around you since your return and the last time you lived here. All the best Paul and Alexis x
Never knew how to make it Sean thanks for sharing. I am not a Leeks fan so wouldn't add that and would add salt and white paper too. Hope you are settling in happily 💎🙏
My grandmother always used ham hock or breast of lamb when making cawl, I used to be given the potatoes from the cawl mashed with salted butter when I was very young, absolutely delicious
Looking like you are settling in . Love the recipe. I love lamb and will try yhis .in erica people have stopped making stews and soups . They do stir frys and thats a problen suger sauces and bad vegtables oils fats . Ive gone back to stews . Your butcher sounds wonderful . Thankyou for sharing . Have a good day .
The cawl soup looks so delicious. A lot of folks are recommending a slow cooker, but I get a better result with stew using stovetop method like this, rather than the slow cooker, because the slow cooker will overcook the veggies and the meat gets too soft. The slow cooker is good if you are gone all day and don't mind a mushy result, for example for pulled pork it's a good method....I've used the slow cooker a lot but for a really nice dish I use the stovetop. Just another perspective 💚
Hi Sean, I’m up North of you in Llanddulas, Conwy, it’s very blustery here on The North Wales Coast today. I’m new to your channel and your blog content is heartwarming , honest and calming. My question to you is , can you please do a video about yourself, who you are? What were you doing in London? What bought you back home to Cymru. What are your plans for your year ahead? Your lovely traditional Welsh cottage is beautiful, I can’t wait to see what you do in your garden😊
Hello Sean, had my first proper coffee and looked your podcast. Please feel free to put your table to the window. Make sure not to live in a 'film-set'. It's your home .... ❤❤❤ By the way I am an addicted sock knitter and I love knitting my socks and watch your podcasts. Best wishes from Cologne Anja
One thing that I have noted with my cats is that if you bring something new into the house I try to put one or two things, like clothes or a small blanket/towel on it that has my scent and they generally tend to accept it faster. At least mine do. The Cawl does look good. I bought a Jambalaya the other day (sausage, chicken and rice) and have a recipe for one that also includes shrimp. As basic as it sounds it has been a while since I have really cooked more healthy and found it a bit spicy but very nice. Gives me the incentive to cook more soup and stews!
Food waste bags go out weekly. We have to order the green dumpy style bags for garden waste, during Winter months you need to book a collection, but during the main season, collections are weekly. That is the best butchers shop, the quality of their food is amazing. There used to be three butchers in our village and in the Town, but now just that one. We are very fortunate to still have them. One meal that is popular here is 'Corned Beef Stew' - it seems to be a local favourite, I don't know if it was in your area.
Lovely to see you & the gorgeous cats settling in, just go with the flow of things & take it easy. Please dont forget that choir to join, as your singing voice can melt the heart! take care Sean.
That 'cawl' looks like healthy food to me. You used local lamb and whole vegetables you diced yourself. You did not add anything artificial. I'll try out the recipe as soon as I have been to the organic farm shop to buy their lambs' meat and vegetables. Btw I don't have TV either and I only watch youtube or other ways I can watch 'through the internet'. That's how I found your channel. I did have some questions, but I found the answers myself by watching some of your older videos.
My mother made the best Welsh cowl ever .. such a great childhood memory !! ❤
Sounds delicious, I shall try your recipe thank you🙂
I’m so glad we moved to Wales from West Sussex, life always feels calmer here. Also we overlook the Gwilli steam railway and have stunning views
Came back to this video to enjoy it again. Mere days into living at the Miners Cottage. Simple furnishing, Cawl on the stove, tea and a good chat. Cats playing on the floor.
Won’t be long before it is back on the stove.

Red lentils and split peas add protein and thicken. Yummy!
Hiya Sean
My advice is to get an electric kettle pronto because the kettle on the hob method of boiling water for tea will cost you a fortune in electricity.
You can often pick up a slow cooker in charity shops - they electric test them for safety. I had one for £5 in BHF and it hadn’t been used.
For addition - try dumplings - but make your own rather than buy mixes !
Great videos !!
Brilliant to see the cats have settled in
Lovely to see the cats playing, looks like they are settling in nicely.
Love your cottage, it's beginning to look very cosy and homely 💕
I thought the same thing!😺😼❤
Sean invest in a slow cooker so much easier with the different settings just put whatever you’re cooking in the pot and forget about it for a few hours. Great video
It’s in the post.
Great video. Wish we could pay a visit to you and say fellowship prayers.. Some Christmas carols . Bless you
Sean, I hope you are as happy as you look now. You seem so much happier than when you were in London. I have never tried Welsh Lamb, I rather like the sound of it. I have been to Wales a number of times, it's incredibly beautiful.
I love making soups & stews as they last ages & yours isn't unhealthy as you haven't added any other fat to the meal only whats in the meat, I love the sound of the buy what you need shop as sometimes you don't want to buy loads of something if your not going to use it. That cawl looks delish! You also need a tv licence to watch BBC Iplayer which is often on your smartphone. 🏴
Looking cosy already. Great to see Welsh culture in the mainstream. I second that Slow Cooker … 😊

I'm loving these vids.
What a great fresh beginning.
You probably know this already but for those that don't ...
Cover cardboard with foil (shiny side out) slip behind radiator. Less warmth heating the back wall but back into the room.
Slow-cooker brilliant costs practicality noithing to use , wouldn't be without mine, your cats are injoying themselves spotted your daffodils ❤❤❤
That stew was nice glad you enjoyed it you know how to look after your self❤❤
Cats look really happy. They are funny they don’t like change but seem like they are settling well. Nice wholesome food 😊

Maybe the evaporating of the liquid is needed for the taste?
It is, it reduced down to a thick soup.
Indeed I'm currently listening to the wild winds in the fells of North Cumbria whilst watching you on my TV.
Probably not traditional but I would brown the meat/onions.. there's a lot of flavour created in that process.. loving your vlogs..👍
Im happy for you, youre doing well with all the changes.
I made a potato and leek soup from this book this week but added carrots and herbs 🙂
hello hello from AU.....i've become a cook this year - only from youtube. there are SO many great cooks (pros and not pro's) on youtube- my better half is amazed :) cheers from down under

I’m having fish cakes and tea fer supper tonight. I’ve never heard of cawl before, i’ve made lamb stew and roast leg before, but very different I bet.
Am enjoying your channel and love your accent. My best friend before she passed away had a very similar way of speaking. Blessings from New Zealand.
Your cottage looks fab Sean, glad to see you and the cats happy and settled
Hi Sean it's nice to see your back home in the valley and looking so well on it. I have a question for you. On reading your marvelous book on the people and the life in the valley what do you miss the most in the people and the changes you now see around you since your return and the last time you lived here. All the best Paul and Alexis x
new subscriber from Malta watching all your videos 💙
I give up TV for 10 years when i ilved in wales , now im back in scotland got one now.
Hi Sean, are you going to film doing up your back garden, would love to see that.
Yes but not in the rain or on a frosty day.
Here in West Wales we have cheese with our cawl. Enjoy.
I would call it lamb stew. It sounds homey and warm.😊
I don't pay a TV licence as I don't watch live TV ever. I also love the zero waste shops, we have one in our local town. I hope you enjoyed your cawl.
You should get a wonderbag, it is like a slow cooker but uses no power, I live off grid and use mine all the time for stews soups etc :)
I dont have tv since 2017, what a blessing 🙂
settling in nicely there and the soup/stew looks lovely, might do a tweaked veggie version with quorn or something
Sean you are ‘blooming’ since being back in 🏴, you seem so settled, it’s where you belong 🥰
I make cawl often,i use diced stewing beef .i akso add salt , pepper ,mixed veg ,and a stick . Delicious
I mean stock cube
Looks like the kitties 🐈⬛ are doing great adjusting 😊
Just enjoying ..
Hope you're getting through the storm OK!
Just got home from visiting the chapel to discover there are NO buses after 6pm so am soaked to the bones, off to a warm bath with a hot cuppa tea.
Hello Sean,
had my first proper coffee and looked your podcast.
Please feel free to put your table to the window.
Make sure not to live in a 'film-set'. It's your home .... ❤❤❤
By the way I am an addicted sock knitter and I love knitting my socks and watch your podcasts.
Best wishes from Cologne

I have that welsh recipe book sean, got it from st fagans years ago! 😁 I've never put parsnips in my cawl!
OOh that looks delicious. Think I'll give that a go in my slow cooker . Looks yummy!
lovely looking soup - nothing better than a taste of home.
Lovely to see you & the gorgeous cats settling in, just go with the flow of things & take it easy. Please dont forget that choir to join, as your singing voice can melt the heart! take care Sean.
Wow I could smell that Welsh Cawl coming through my screen.😊
The Crawl looks gorgeous 😋. Have you ever thought about buying a pressure cooker they are excellent 👌
Your home is getting to look nice and cosy now
I’ll definitely be trying that cawl ,I love a bit of Lamb
That 'cawl' looks like healthy food to me. You used local lamb and whole vegetables you diced yourself. You did not add anything artificial. I'll try out the recipe as soon as I have been to the organic farm shop to buy their lambs' meat and vegetables.
Btw I don't have TV either and I only watch youtube or other ways I can watch 'through the internet'. That's how I found your channel. I did have some questions, but I found the answers myself by watching some of your older videos.
