- Unknown Date. Training video from the Los Angeles Fire Department, on how to be a Tillerman. Please excuse the quality, this is a digitized copy of a vhs transfer from very old film stock.
Love that old Seagrave! My Dad was a tiller man on one exactly like that, 1953 Seagrave. I rode it my first year as a volunteer .
Made in the mid 1950's. When I came on the job in 1977 we still had trucks like these in Reserve. Not fun when it's pouring rain.Notice the Auto Fireman (Driver) and Tillerman both wear Soft Hats when responding.
I always wondered why they did that. Why not helmets ?
Did that. Flip the bucket and pull the center post. About 1988 LAFD retired the last "bucket" tillerman truck.
Great tiller training video
If only Kramer had seen this film beforehand! Leapin' Larry's wouldn't have suffered near the amount of damage.
woooow look at all those cool cars on the road !!!!!!!
always MENTAL TOUGHNESS ... assuming any given time and given place ... the first responder are the one who are in radius of the fire occurance ... tama ba Ka Zoilo D. Isip the fireman always accompanied me in short trip especially Angeles Pampanga ... just to sleep and maybe a reminiscent of his your ... TAGAMET his medicine and laughter ... salamat
The ladder truck has come a long way. From the 1950's Crown to the Seagrave truck to the 1980's Seagrave to the 1993 Simon Duplex to the 2000 LaFrance to the now new Pierce Arrow XT.
OUtstanding video Extremely rare. Looks like it was filmed about 1958. Black helmets not yellow.
Soft hats. No facepiece pocket in the turnout coat.
The BEST JOB in the fire service
Beautiful machine. Tough job. Interesting footage. It feels like Bob Dylan should've written a song about "The Tillerman"!
Cat Stevens had an album called 'Tea for the Tillerman'. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea_for_the_Tillerman
OMG! Can you imagine having this job? They didn't even have modern plumbing or oxygen tanks! Can you imagine running into a burning building with a helmet with a tube attached that someone else was foot pumping air into? 3 tugs means save me now!
pretty cool thank you for posting where did you dig this film up from? curious
can you imagine what training video would look like today.
@nanitesnodes My dad got them from a friend. Exactly where they came from I am not sure.
Newest cars I could see were 1956 models.
Hiw come we don't know the exact date of this film?
This vidieo had to be made in the late 50's or during the 60's
