Very heartfelt, except classic rock is not the best genre, because it is not a genre. It's hard, soft, glam, psychedelic, prog, rock n roll put in a big basket. It only exists as a genre based on nostalgia. In time we will be calling Sonic Youth and Nirvana "classic rock" as well.
And imo, that’s why it’s the best. For the very reason that it isn’t a genre in the standard sense. It exists based only on cultural conditions, cultural understandings, which shaped a generation’s experience of music. I think there’s something incredible about that.
Nirvana can already be considered "classic"
@@misteramazing this video makes me feel weird because you can say that about anything
@@misteramazing I don't think it's as much as a genre, and more of (as other commenters have said) something similar to the Great American Songbook.

The era of music he plays isn't what originally would be classic rock anyway. It became classic rock over time, but really its the mid 60s and a few years in the 70s. I mean there's no stuff like Bob Dylan's mid 60s music, which is arguably the best showcase for why the era was special, and how it went overnight from "i love you, you love me" kind of songs, to being about to talk about anything surreal or more artistically challenging. I think THOSE years make classic rock special. A lot of the stuff in here is just popular songs of certain years, often later on. It probably holds nostalgia for someone's dad, but didn't really change the world like the mid 60s music. I wasn't alive for it, but I know extensively about the eras due to just books, footage, and interest. I'd say Bob Dylan going electric and hip hop being born in the Bronx are the two biggest moments in music inflluence, at least for the past century or so.
K C 2 biggest moments in musical influence? Now that’s quite the statement, especially considering the development of jazz with the likes of Armstrong, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, electronic music with the likes of Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream, Prog Rock throughout the late 60s and 70s with Crimson, Floyd and of course heavy metal.
Wow, so original

Late 60s and early 70s one of the best eras for music. Derek and the Dominos, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Cream, Jimi hendrix, Black Sabbath, Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Yardbirds, Kinks, The who, Pink floyd, and others are just the best. This isn't biased. I am young and listen to all types or music like rap, punk, alternative rock, pop and hard rock.

@@Euro.Patriot 80s had glam metal trash. All the good 80s rock was in the underground. Grunge, hardcore punk, and alternative rock started in the 80s, but weren't popular.
I wanted to comment on how you portrayed these songs and experiences as uniquely American and Americana when the music was popular around the world and most of the biggest artists of this time were British.
I totally agree with you
King Caiser he already touched on that watch the whole video or listen better if you did
@@HUGzJayGon The Who, Fleetwod Mac, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Rolling Stones... all British. There were a few decent American bands. But the vast majority and the most liked were British.
Yes. The video is very US-centric.
Tyler Aschen I'm not saying those guys suck; but, the British fetish is the leading cause of retrospective blindness in the world today. The Guess Who and Neil Young are Canadian (North American). Credence Clearwater Revival, ZZ Top, 2/3 of Crosby Stills Nash, The Doors, David Bowie, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Jimi Hendrix are American artist.
I agree a lot of classic rock songs give me some sensory imagery. Especially bands like Pink Floyd
I'm Brazilian, my father is Uruguayan and my mother is Brazilian too. My parents were both born during the military dictatorship in South America. My father consumed mostly British rock and punk, which reflected his anger regarding the situation in his country. My mother, because of the censorship, only got to listen to Brazilian rock and sometimes American. All of that to say that when I was born, the kind of music I was given was Beatles, Top 80's/70's/60's songs and the things my parents listened to at home. So even though I am a 00's kid born and raised in BrazilI can relate to the experiences you talked about in the video and I think that's pretty interesting. This comment got too long, but all I meant was to say I liked the video lol
I've always marveled in the global scale of so many rock acts. You guys (Brazil) especially seemed to always be so loving and welcoming to bands like Rush, Queen, etc. I love it only because in America, we never really pack stadiums to see foreign acts because we all only speak English. Your guys' energy and love at concerts has just always impressed me.
I felt the same way from this video...Being young (born in '98) and raised on rock, it's interesting to feel the same experiences as our parents, through their music. I loved when all my teachers growing up would comment on the t-shirts I was wearing saying things like "Hey...the Who was even before my time, how do you know them?" or "Man I remember...I was 15 when that album came out, it was June of 1975."
The connections it gave me to people always felt as good as the music.

“Classic rock” is way too vast and varied of a genre (if you can even call it that) too making sweeping general statements about it as a whole like the things said in this video
More or less
Yeah, like basically anything that falls into the broader genre of rock (including punk, grunge, e.c.t), came out more than 10 years ago, and was popular is considered classic rock at this point
right, so many other genres like acoustic rock, heavy metal, hard rock, pop rock, etc. fall under the category of "classic rock"
Yup that’s why it’s fucking great
@@rattyeely in general, I consider the 60s and 70s to be classic rock, anything after that isn't (with exceptions of course, it's just a general rule)
I feel like in it's own way 90s alt. rock got back to relatability in it's own unique way. Also it doesn't have that boomer excess and tinge of post modernism nihlism to it. Artists like Neutral Milk Hotel, Blur, Weezer, and Smashing Pumpkins never really get enough credit in the mainstream. However, take my favorite, not necessarily objectively the best, of those four Weezer and I can't leave out that they were inspired by lots of classic rock acts such as the Beach Boys, Kiss, and throwing it back a bit Buddy Holly.
Andrew GTB i could agree if you include early 2000’s alternative/modern rock, like Linkin Park, Green Day, Radiohead, etc.

Alright. You can make a video about the merits of classic rock, but don't try to claim that it's the "best" form of music. Because it isn't. There is no best form of music, music is the most subjective thing and its patronising when people get preachy about it. I can see the reason people like ac/dc but I can also see why people like lil uzi vert. They're waaaayyyy different but neither is objectively bad. If music conjures up emotions for you, then that's great. If not, that's fine too.
John Cunningham 😂😂😂😂
I think he was just making fun of everyone commenting “this is real music” and “when music was good”
Lil uzi vert is trash but everything else I agree with 😂😂😂 but there is a reason why rock and rock associated genres like alternative were the most popular for a long time, also American culture plays into it also.

I loved going on car rides and hearing the exact same 10 songs all the time, kansas, journey, zeppelin, ccr, all of it. I've gotten back into it and the best way my dad described it as "Its music for the music lovers," which is simple, but it seems as though when you're really deep into music, you always go back to the rock of the 60's and 70's.
You’ve articulated exactly what I’ve been thinking recently, how I always find myself returning to this music when I get tired of sifting through new music, trying to find bands I really like…
Beautiful thesis on classic rock and beautiful editing good job my friend
The quality of these videos are amazing, keep it up man! :)
you can find everything you described in like every other genre tho
I'm dissapointed that there was no Yes. Even when you mentioned the British bands.
However, I really agree that alot of what sets classic rock apart and makes it special is the feeling and heart put into the music. Its why I love progressive rock from groups like yes, genesis, KC, floyd, and tull. They pack so much emotion and feeling into their songs I just can't help but let it swell up inside me. Nothing can beat the endings of songs like "Supper's ready" and "close to the edge" when they swell into those big beautiful final lines. Beautiful.

You've got gandmaster flash, A Tribe Called Quest, Del the funky Homosapien etc. rapping about the struggles of daily life as well... Maybe it's because I never grew up in a time where classic rock was popular, but I fail to see why this sense of rebellion or an 'endorsement' of the average life is so unique to classic rock...
