Nice to see some deadwood carving to give people some ideas. I liked the way it came out. Now some people should see on bonsai mirai on the how to create deadwood on a pine video and what its like without the use of power tools. Seems u get two totally different looks of deadwood. Where power tools is more breaking the strands of wood using chisels and tearing the wood gives a different look as u peel away at the tree. Great video peter cant wait for part 2.

What a great decision to use that “ugly” root as a feature and make it tell the story of the tree. Wonderful carving! I bought a router and still need to find a good carving bit. Then I will have a go. Good tip not to over do it

Usually I love the transformation, but this time was only sad.

    • @mandymas

As Peter says, different people would come to different solutions. We have different backgrounds and tastes, what someone likes others do not and that is all good. I believe this was a great process but the full potential of this bonsai is yet to be seen. I also believe that the aspiration to make this into a tree that feels really old was achieved, and for that a thick trunk and thin small branches is best.

Poor tree. I've been trying to understand this hobby, but every time I see a "project", I see beautiful trees being tortured and being kept on the verge of dying.
Before you start yelling I'm deluded and that trees don't have feelings, probably so, but I do. And tearing down a beautiful tree that nature has created, under the pretext that "we try to replicate nature" is bullcrap. I just see that you try to replicate suffering and I start wondering if this is normal, psychologically speaking.
In this case, the original tree was infinitely more beautiful than what you ended up with.
