姫路市にある好古園（こうこえん）は、歴史的な背景を活かしながら造られた池泉回遊式の日本庭園群です。この庭園は、特別史跡である姫路城の西御屋敷跡と旧市之橋の発掘調査で確認された武家屋敷の遺構をもとにして作庭されており、全体の面積は3.5ヘクタールにおよびます。
庭園は、古地図『姫路侍屋敷図』に基づいて設計されており、合計で9つの異なる庭園から構成されています。各庭園は、かつての武家屋敷の区画を反映して築地塀で区切られており、江戸時代の雰囲気を再現するために長屋門や屋敷門が入り口に設置されています。また、園内には渡り廊下があり、江戸時代の建築が忠実に再現されています。このため、時代劇や大河ドラマの撮影地としても利用されています。
この庭園の設計には、造園学者の中村一と地元の若手造園家が協力しており、姫路の伝統と風景を尊重した庭園デザインが施されています。好古園は、姫路市の市制100周年を記念して1992年（平成2年）4月29日に開園されました。また、好古園の入口に掲げられている扁額の書は、元東京大学教授である結城令聞によるものです。
2017年（平成29年）3月には、入場者数が500万人を超え、その人気と魅力が多くの訪問者を引きつけていることを示しています。現在も姫路市が運営・管理を行い、歴史的価値を持つ庭園として、国内外から多くの観光客を迎えています。

Koko-en Garden, located in Himeji City, is a stunning stroll garden with ponds (Chisen Kaiyu-shiki Garden) that beautifully incorporates the region's historical background. The garden is based on the remains of Himeji Castle's Nishi-Oyashiki (West Residence) and former Ichinohashi, discovered through archaeological excavations. Covering a total area of 3.5 hectares, it draws inspiration from the ancient map "Himeji Samurai Residence Map."
Koko-en is composed of nine distinct Japanese gardens, each reflecting the layout of former samurai residences, separated by traditional tsukiji walls. To enhance the Edo-period atmosphere, entrances to each garden feature long gates (Nagaya-mon) and mansion gates, and the interior includes recreated Edo-era architectural elements like connecting corridors. These authentic touches have made Koko-en a popular filming location for historical dramas and TV series.
The garden's design was a collaboration between landscape architect Kazuo Nakamura and a team of young local gardeners, who worked together to preserve the beauty and traditions of Himeji. Koko-en officially opened on April 29, 1992, in celebration of Himeji City's 100th anniversary. The plaque at the garden's entrance features the calligraphy of Reimon Yuki, a former professor at the University of Tokyo and the son of Yoshimune Yuki.
As of March 2017, Koko-en had welcomed over 5 million visitors, a testament to its appeal and charm. Managed by Himeji City, it continues to attract many tourists from both Japan and around the world, offering a rich historical experience amidst a beautifully designed Japanese landscape.
