All of my 50+ chickens I hatched and brooded, but because one of my original girls was broody and I happened to be hatching some olive eggers I decided to see if she would accept them….and it worked! She now is a proud mama of 10 babies and doing great!!
Wow!!
"all my 50+ chickens I hatched and brooded"
how did you hatched the very first one without a hen?? 🤔
Did you sit on the egg? 😨
@@jrviade85incubator?
My Easter egged (Bandit) has gone broody every spring. Fist time we let her hatch one chick and sadly our dog killed it. She was calling and looking everywhere for her BA hand it broke my heart. She and I bonded at that point.
Last year when she went broody, I slipped 6 day old chicks under her in broad daylight to make sure she got to be a mom. She happily raised them all.
She's sitting on eggs from the flock at this moment. She is a good attentive mom.
Just bought 5 chicke, we love you CHICKENLANDIA 🎉❤
Love you too!!!
I found your book yesterday at Tractor Supply! I was so excited, and I bought it. So far the book is amazing! I see it’s going to be very handy. Thank you for writing it.
This is such good info. I had a large flock years ago and let my hens raise their own chicks. It was so rewarding to watch. Now I only have 3, and in my old age, they bring me just as much joy.
Thank you so much!!
I just left for vacation for the first time since getting my flock and asked my neighbors and their kids to “coop sit”. I gave them your book to read (they were homeschooled) and your RUclips to watch. They did great! Even had to handle some “shenanigans” and did so with gusto! It was great to see.
Ok, I commented on this post awhile back, but chicken math struck yesterday and now we have six more chicks to add to our flock of seven!! We are going to give this a go! Cross your feathers and fingers because I'm really hoping this will work!
Hello Dahlia
My babies are 4 weeks old...Lord have mercy, they act like toddlers...flying everywhere. Too cute.
LOL so true.
This video came at the perfect time. We have had chicks before that we adopted from others. But never had our hen hatch and raise babies. Well that changed yesterday. One of our girls hatched her first chick yesterday. There are 8 more to go!
Yay!! What a special moment.
I got 2 Deathlayer hatchlings for my broody Buff Orp. I crept into the coop at night and slipped one chick under her wing. Goldie grunted in surprise, then felt the chick, and she drew it close and began to purr. When I lifted her other wing, she gave a surprised squeak, then purred in pure rapture. I backed off to let her raise them, but at 5 weeks I noticed I terrified them. But they were tractable at night on the roost, so I handfed them and massaged their spines. I got to be fast friends with my gorgeous Deathlayers that way.
Awww yay!!!
Silkies are the best mommas! They go broody often.
I swear, I have had a 3 hens all go broody at the same time. After ome had hatched out babies and I took them from her (her 1st clutch of chick didn't make it, idk what happend) but after taking her babies, she went broody 2 weeks later! She hatched out more babies! Now I have another hen that's gone broody and she sits in the one spot everyone lays there eggs! So now everytime i go to get eggs I'll see her sitting and ill go "hey! What do u think your doing" lol I love it. She keeps keep the eggs clean too. This hen used to hate me but she let's me pet on her now
Dalia , I got my first egg today 😊thank you for all you do🤗
We have a broody hen sitting on eggs now for the first time. It has been a week. Now I know what to expect. Thanks!
You expect to dance
I've done this successfully, and always feel like I'm the one who accomplished something great, when in fact it's the momma hen. 🤣
LOL!!
Timely question: will a broody hen incubate a regular bird egg? 🤔
(I ended up with a cardinal egg after hedge trimming)
I wouldn't risk it. I would worry she may harm it when it hatches because it is altricial (hatches with eyes closed and needs to be fed and cared for in the nest) and very far from how baby chicks are. Do you have an incubator?
I'm getting one tomorrow. In the meantime, I've kept it in a little pouch between my boobs. It's all I could think to do!
@@ShortbusMooner I think that’s a natural response! 😂❤️
I too have noticed a huge difference between brooder raised and Rosie raised..Rosie is my consistently broody hen.. she is such a good mom. Butman are her "kids" wild
I have been raising baby chicks inside have had chickens go broody but stay that way long enough end up bringing the eggs in to finish the process
Love this! I hope one of my chickens decides to be a mama someday 🤗.
One of my girls was singing the egg song and my rooster was calling back to her. It went on for like 15 minutes the other day!! It was like the egg song on steroids 🤣.
LOL!!
I love this channel!! Keep up the great work!!
So I just had my Chickens have chicks! They are sooooo cute little fuzz balls!! I got the mamas as chicks so I can just go in and see the babies with little to no fuss from the mamas. I had three hens go Brody in the same week so the babies have all three of the hens as mamas and no hen or roo even think about massing with those babies. So far I got 6 babies and three more eggs but I think one egg is dead but I want the hen who sits to stay until the two come in the world so when that happens I will remove that one. Hopefully more hens then roos come out of those babies! 🤞
You gave me the courage and inspiration to get chickens. I have 6 hens and 1 rooster. 2 months old . My sweet roo just started to try and crow 2 days ago. It was so cute. Now I wish I had gotten 9 hens and my rooster. But I'm already wanting baby chicks. Thank you for this video and all the videos and your book which I have. Your such a Gem to watch.
Chicken Math straks again! LOL. At about 7 to 8 Months my first chicks now Chickens just had there first chicks in the last week, So you won't have long to wait especially if you Chickens are a Brody breed.
Thanks so much!
Hi Dahlia, just found your channel, your such a beautiful vibrant person. I've recently bought chickens again after not having them for a few years. Now at home caring for my husband, your channel and our new 3 girls are bring us so much joy! Sending love from Perth Western Australia
Thank you so much for the kind words!
I was just thinking about this topic!!
You make me smile...I love watching your channel...almost as much as I love my chickens, don't tell my girls I said so!
LOL!!
You're a joy to watch. Glad I found you.
Love you! Won’t you PLEASE share your source for glasses? There all so darn CUTE! (I bought your book… it’s WONDERFUL ❣️🌹)
Hahaha most of my glasses are from two companies: Diva and Caviar. I love different kinds of glasses but it's a rather expensive habit LOL.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia well, they’re such an important accessory because they frame our face and the style tells a lot about our personalities without our saying a word. Thank you!
I was thinking of trying this so I can have the breedof chicks I've been coveting and also in case the home brewed eggs she's sitting on don't hatch. Very exciting
Appreciate all the information that you give and sharing as a reminder and just new information thank
Thank you!
Perfect timing here too! Thank you!!!
Great video Love from Bulgaria!
We were given 5 bantam hens & a huge rooster. The rooster has been rehomed then 2 days later 3 of the hens went broody so we decided to just let them be & see if we get some chicks. Honestly didn't know we could have added a few eggs from our Barred Rocks & RI Reds with theirs. Now I know thank you for all the information you share. Oh btw have been reading your book, absolutely love how you present all the information & your thoughts ♥️
Thanks so much!!
Henlo Dahlia
What breed of chicken is the red/orange/gold one?? I want some!
Chicken Math strikes again!!
Thank you for gently helping me to be a better chicken mom.
Blessings, Love and Joy ❤
She's a silkie/bantam rhode island red cross! I just love her. Thank you for the kind words!
Hi , from NSW Australia , I got my bantam to adopt 3 newly hatched chicks just days after her clutch had hatched . I kept them warm through the night with a warm water bottle and set my alarm for 5am just before dawn then took the chicks in and placed them under her while she was still sleeping . This way , I could hear and see if there were going to be any problems . By sunrise mumma is awake and has no idea she has 3 new chicks and continues on caring for all of them . Worked fantastic , I was awake to keep watch and listen if there was to be any problems . Just meant an extra early rise for me but it was 100% successful and so easy .
❤️❤️❤️’Love your stuff! I agree with everything you said and learned something, too!
Omg I just found your book at Tractor Supply! I'm so excited! 🥰😁
Yes maim!!!
Lol I learned the hard way to mark little Ash's eggs...she was rolling other eggs under her. I've separated Ash in the coop and will let her out to dust bathe.
thank you sis for the knowledge and the information is very useful for me .. greetings greetings from Indonesian laying hens breeders
Thanks for the recommendation! I am really hopeful we can do this! If not, we have a good contingency plan, mostly thanks to you!
Hi Dahlia! (I have a cat named Dahlia; we call her Dahli 😊).
I am awaiting the call to pick up my 1 -2 day old chicks to give my broody hen. I bought a rabbit hutch with a small run for them to stay as they get acclimated. My plan is to keep the hutch inside the run or the coop. Can you tell me when I should move my broody from her nest in the coop to the hutch? The reason I bought the hutch is because there is too far a jump from the coop nesting box to the coop floor, which makes me nervous for the babies. Also wondering how you manage feeding and watering if you don’t use a second space for the Mama and her babies. Just looking for a little more logistical information about the process and set up when attempting this! I am new to the process, but I am very eager to make it happen. Thank you for all your wonderful videos!
Love your channel. You have such a fun personality. Next time I’m in your neck of the woods, I’m heading over to Chickenlandia!
yeah
Thank you so much for all your information, it has helped me so much this first year. I snuck in 4 chicks last night but I think one of them has pasty butt, will mama take care of it or do I? Again thank you for so much 🙌
My peace and joy comes from Jesus but I do love my chickens and enjoy watching them.
😍💕
Thank you for the video. My two Wyandot hens are fantastic adopted mothers. The most I’ve put under them is five. I can’t find any information on maximum amount you can put under one. I want to try 10 or 12. What do you think?
When do I introduce moma and babies? A few days after?
What about empty eggs shells? Should I put some in there
how do you know when the eggs are fertile
One of my hens is broody and is hopefully going to hatch her eggs. My question is, if they are born with mom do i have to feed differently? Do i have to seperate them to feed? What would be a good solution?
I have raised chickens in the Bruder, and I let mama hand raise them, but I put them in a separate place, because I don’t know how you feed the babies if you keep them with the flock, and I was always afraid that the flock wouldn’t accept them until they were big enough, but how would you go about feeding them without the flock eating the baby food
My hen just standrd up with her chicks but left a few eggs umhatched. There was broody hen in the mest beside. I moved the eggs to the other hen. Was it the right thing to do? Unfortunately I didnt mark them.
Do the other hens bother the chicks. Or do I need to separate them. Can I leave them with the mother? If so, how do I let her raise them.
I have a broody hen for the first time. She keeps stealing eggs. I marked 4 for her to keep. But I have to take eggs from her every day. 😐
My broody hen kept doing that so I finally had to candle them and mark them and take away the non viable ones. She had five and because I didn't have the right candling equipment I made the mistake of giving her three back out of five. Two hatched. I recandled and the other one wasn't fertilized. So I have now two little fluffy butts running around😊😊
@@jackiesnowflake2255 I should candle the eggs. She cracked one and it was fertilized but wasn’t going to make it. I think I might have to buy her a couple of chicks.
Hey so I’m in need of some help. I got a hen that laid some eggs and when the babies hatched. The hen keeps stepping on them and I’m kind of stuck between leaving the chicks with her or placing them up for adoption. But the thing is. The adopting hen’s chicks are already like 2 weeks older than my newborn chicks. Would mines still be able to coexist with those bigger chicks? And can I still sneak my chicks in at night for her to adopt? Help please?
How to catch 1
I AM SO CONFUSED I have some 4 month old sikly chickens but they just laid their 1st egg but they are not laying on it
Saved for later!
Best way to fertilize them ?
Get a rooster! He knows what to do. 😉
@@WelcometoChickenlandia hahahah I mean I assumed.. but what the heck do roosters actually do? Is he going to make all the chicken eggs fertile all the time? Or just going to encourage brooding? Obv I could Google some of this but that won’t give me the BEST answer! Or a funny one 😂
@@marisab7200 haha he will mate with as many as he can, as often as he can… MEN! 😤😂🐓
@@marisab7200 his presence may encourage brooding but only in the ones who already have that instinct. If you have a rooster in your flock it’s likely most of your eggs will be fertile. But of course it depends on the rooster. ☺️
Question for you. I am not concerned about the other hens causing issues with the chicks . I only have a flock of three and they are all quite nice and friendly. My hen has been sitting on some fertilized eggs for a couple weeks now. It occurred to me, though, our coop is about 4 feet off the ground with a ramp going up to it. Is this a danger for the chicks? I do have the option of setting up a rabbit hutch in the chicken run, but I am unsure of moving my broody hen this far into it. If your advice is to move her, will this possibly break her brood?
They will probably be okay going up and down the ramp. If you decide to move her, it's possible she may abandon her nest but you will have the best chance of success if you move her at night and move some of the bedding with her. :-)
@@WelcometoChickenlandia thanks so much!!!
I have a brahma hen thats been sitting on eggs for at least a month. The other 2 hens gave up a week ago but shes still sitting on these eggs that arent going to hatch. I just bought 5 chicks today. 2 of them are less than 3 days old but i got 3 buff orphatines that was in sale for $1 each because they're a little older. I tried to show her one of the baby orphatines and she pecked it. I did this all wrong. Now I'm scared to try and give her the younger ones tonight because she was so aggressive with the other one.
I did put the box of chicks in the next nesting box over and she was interested but I don't know. Maybe I should only try the younger ones and see if she makes that sound.
Question- I’m down to 3 hens( Americana and Astralorps) and a HUGE Americana rooster. He is pretty gentle but does charge me at times. I need to get more chicks but none are broody. Wondering if the rooster will attack young hens or try to mate too soon if I buy baby chicks and integrate them when it’s time? ( I know how to integrate them slowly by putting small ones beside big ones at run in small crate). Not many rooster videos out there.
To answer about getting more chicks: I have 4 hens, 1 rooster all 1 year old. In March and April I got a total of 6 more, they went into a pen as soon as we got over 55 at night= 6 weeks. They got out and all are well. The trouble comes more from the older hens in my case. But they all get along
@@heatherk8931 thanks for your input! 💗
I agree with Heather K that he will likely be fine. In fact, if he's a good guy he may keep the cranky old hens in check. But just integrated slowly and watch them very carefully. I have a video about this coming out next week!
@@WelcometoChickenlandia yay! Thanks!
I have a hen that hatched 11 egges yestrday all healthy and good so i moved her to another place but the probleme is today she keep sitting on the chiks she's not moving to eat etc.. she just keep the chiks under her what can i do is she a over protective mother or what please tell me what can i do?
Put a smaller dreaded and waterer next to her so she can eat
My 3 month old chick lost her mom to stray dog killed her now My chick thinks I’m her mom she follows me everywhere and it’s hard for me to let her go out side! Can you help me how to start separating myself with her 😢
How can I get a hen to stop thinking she wants to be a momma and stop 🛑 brooding ?
She'll come out of her nesting box a very short time and I have seen her eat and drink but not near enough.
I've gotta do something for her . She's even stopped laying but every other morning if lucky.
I've seen many things on RUclips but most seemed horrible. I'm not going to hold my hen under ice cold water for 30 seconds.. NO WAY 😢 ....
Any humane suggestions would be greatly appreciated 👍
I think that's horrible 😢. I've seen to just keep her out of the next box by putting in a crate 3 or 4 days. Then let her out to see if shes over it.
If she's broody she should not be laying at all. It's probably other chickens laying in her nesting box. I would try taking her on one or two very long car rides! That seems to snap them out of it with little trauma.
Hello! plz help to save a chick that is attacked by a cat?😭my chick got attacked by a cat it got injured 😭plz tell me 😭❤️
Love your videos and for the last year that I have been raising my first 7 hen flock, I have used your experience to be the best that I can be at playing the rooster 🐓 and keeper. I have recently had my first "brooder" and after a few weeks of trying to get her out of brood, I took away her two ceramic eggs (she was in alone in "jail" at the time in the chick raising coop) and while she was out for a daily walk, I swithched her eggs with two Easter Egger day olds. Immediately, she took to them and is raising them now perfectly. I am nervous, and I am scared. It is cold out, she is keeping them warm, but she is making it very hard for me to ensure they are eating, driinking and secure. I have so many questions!!!
THIS is a unique and exciting experient to observe but I would love to find some advanced resources on this particular topic of using a broody hen to raise store bought chicks.
❤❤❤ beautiful explanation. Thanks 🙏
