    In this one year, you could have learned a foreign language w the amount of time you spent playing video games, and MOST OF US could have, too, in pretty much any given year. I feel torn when I read comments like this. Sure, on a basic level this is true. You are responsible for your own happiness. But the whole "it's your choice, it's your fault" schtick is totally devoid from any sort of human compassion.
      I feel this is a trap that some people who go all-in on maximizing productivity fall into.
      Not saying that you do. And it probably wasn't your intention. But I truly have seen some people who became mega productive, but sold their humanity along the way.

      I went into making money online a few months ago. And this feeling of empthyness is still in my body. I feel like something is wrong and im pretty sure the feeling would be me spending hours playing my favorite video game. Even though I make some kinda good money online. My brain is telling me "now that you made it, you can take a little break from it and play video games all day long" and this is a trap that I took many times but it keeps coming and I know that if I start doing 1 game per day it'll become 3 games per day the 5th day then 7 games per day the 14th day. It will only grow. But don't get me wrong, i'll still work on my projects, i'll still go out with friends, i'll still do some workout. But I know, I'll lose so much time playing league man. It's killing me and I don't know what to do. I'm currently at my 7th day of having this hard feeling of starting a queue and this feeling is growing a ton for no reason. I learned that videogames was a trap, in 2014 after I got absolutely addicted to destiny. I didn’t have a job and am ashamed to admit that I could jump on at 11am and stay playing until 5am. With food breaks, in between. I’ve gsmes d since about 1990 and although I did game a lot as a kid, it wasn’t nowhere near as a problem, as it could be, today. That weekly reset and that sexy destiny raid only loot, was too much and was all I could think about. Raids, iron banner, nightfalls, prison of elders etc. It just never stopped and either could I. That was until around November 2015 of about 15 months of only destiny. I still miss the game but doubt I’d ever go back.

    I recently got so sick of Rocket League, was then starting to get somewhat into learning competitive fighting games and after getting brutally demoted in ranked I just asked "What's the fucking point?" and that's the important part. There is none. It is a pointless, arduous endeavor, that leads to literally nothing. It is the single WORST return on your time investment. ANY other hobby can result in real world importance, change, and marketable skill. Gaming will never give you that. It's funny because I do have other pursuits and hobbies but even with those, I'm done with games. Opportunity cost of those hours wasted is too much. Don't sacrifice your potential, and your life for pointless fucking pixels.

    This is a great video. Very insightful. However I don’t agree with quitting video games outright. If you’re addicted to the point where you’re ignoring other factors in your life, then it’s helpful. But life is about balance. There is nothing wrong with playing video games for fun for a few hours a week.

  • @jorgetinoco3574

    This video seems to be directed to people with addiction, to the point they can't do anything else.
    If you love gaming because of the stories, the memories, your friends, the gameplay - you shouldn't ever stop doing something you love. However, life is about balance, you should work on your discipline.
    I wake up everyday at 5AM, hit the gym for an hour, make breakfast, listen to a life style podcast, work until 5, read during my break, take a walk. Come back home, cook, meditate, watch something and game for 2 to 3 hours.
    You should always balance your life between, gaming, working out, read a book, listen to a podcast, watch a documentary or a tv series,
    Dont forget to spend time with your family, and go out, hike, fish, kayaking, any outdoor activies!

    • @jorgetinoco3574
      @jorgetinoco3574 Год назад +1

      Hi, I read your comment and your age and I wonder how do you feel video gaming is a waste of time?
      Life is very subjective, if video gaming is taking 100% of your time and you aren't giving the rest of your life some sort of balance, then yes, that is a problem. However, that is a problem within yourself not video games.
      I see a lot of people saying that there are more productive things you can be doing, learning an instrument, learning a language, learning a skill. What's the point of all that? You are trading one threadmill for another, is it because it seems tangible that makes it better?

    • @happytravels2480
      @happytravels2480 Год назад +2

      @@jorgetinoco3574Valid points that I often make to myself as well. It is all very subjective. It has not interfered with my personal life and I am very successful in that area. I just know, deep down, that I could have accomplished so much more if I were not addicted to video games. They are intentionally addictive, like social media, and they are easy escapes from life. They offer a fleeting sense of accomplishment. A feeling of self worth, or quite often the opposite, as is the case in Call of Duty, which I play most often. As you mentioned, no different than television or even playing an instrument. I would argue that playing an instrument is a skill that you can carry with you for life. I’m not sure you could say the same about playing video games. But alas…”time you enjoy wasting, is not wasted time.”

    • @JamieR
      @JamieR Год назад +1

      @@jorgetinoco3574 You make very valid points. To me it seems real simple. Figure out what brings us happiness and joy, then do that. If video games makes us frustrated, angry or feel like we waste our time - it's probably time to reflect and take a hard look at time spent. If it brings joy, because we play with friends or family. Then that is not a waste of time.
      Life is so subjective that there is no one metric toward what is a waste of time and what isn't. Sure, it's not the best use of time, but neither is any other form of entertainment. What really matters. What truly matters, if we look at the grand scheme of things - we could serve and help others, learn important skills, build and progress societies.
      That said, nobody has the right to tell anyone what they should do with their time. It's up to each and every one of us to decide for ourselves.
      I think the biggest issue is that we all carry trauma, and so many of us are burying our emotions with technology. Instead of actually doing the work and reconnecting with our bodies. It's pretty clear with all the auto-immune and health issues which are rampant these days. We, as a race, have some serious healing to do. I see this as a way more time sensitive matter, than if we should do xyz or not. Tech addiction. It's just a symptom of the problem. Coping mechanism.
      It's not all gloom and doom though; we have the power to do something about it and heal :) But first everyone have to wake up to the fact that trauma does not need to meet the ACE scale of traumatic events for it to actually count. It can be anything.
      Trauma is not what happened to us, it's how we experienced the event. And our nervous system, biology, environment, upbringing, co-regulation between mom and family, and so many other factors play so much into how much we can handle before it becomes overwhelming, and in turn, becomes trauma.
      Alright, I'm done ranting. Just very passionate about trauma work and healing.

    I’ll do you one better. Stop playing video games to purposely feel less valuable in life. To have less purpose. I’ll let you in on a secret. There’s no prize at the end guys. Having to constantly strive to have purpose and value is an endless cycle in of as itself. Quitting video games won’t fix that issue. It’ll help for sure, but you really need to focus on yourself and your place in the world. I realized that there’s beauty in just existing and the art of doing nothing. We’re animals guys. Things you buy won’t fix anything. It’s the experiences you have! What I learned from quitting video games was that they weren’t the problem. They were definitely a distraction, but they weren’t the big problem. The problem really is us having the need to strive for value and purpose. Because our only purpose is to reproduce and die. Society creates all these expectations and rewards you for “being successful” or getting famous. But all those things aren’t possible without other people. Someone can’t be famous if no one else exists right? A business can’t thrive or even start without sales. Where do sales come from? Other people. So what’s the point? There isn’t one at all haha. Just live your life and have fun doing the things you wanna do. Have fun with real people and the world that you live on!

    1:25 such a balanced take. like some people really do need that distraction. life is fucking hard and we dont always have control over the it. gaming can give us a sense of control; the growth comes, in part, from realizing when you're safe enough to put the game down.

I know I've wasted so many years but I'm still playing video games im addicted and I'm aware of it, yesterday I uninstall it again, I hope I can stop playing any video games, I'll grab my guitar and start learning again, I'll go to the gym and practice drawing again, hoping I can escape this addiction.

    At some point I will probably not be a gamer in the sense I play a lot. Instead of quit cold turkey or wean off, I think I will just stick to shorter, more narrative driven games that are simple and don't require a lot of time. I actually don't like games that try to encourage escapism. I think most people need to game in moderation, but I understand others need to quit cold turkey. I'm more addicted at engaging in gaming news and I really need to quit that ASAP.
    I have also noticed VR is a lot more engaging and it is actually good I can only play for 30 mins t a time on average. Playing Ping Pong or Mini Golf in VR is similar to playing it in real life.
    Lastly, I think having a mix of various hobbies really helps.

    I sadly fell into this trap but that was because my parents got a divorce and so games where low key an escape, so in school I would barley pay attention and just think about how my parents would fight the next day leading up tot he divorce. 😔 The way im saying this sounds like I was using a drug, I guess gaming as an escape is really like a drug... anyhow after highschool I didnt go to college, so I mostly worked for usps for a 5 years and then decided it was enough, so I saved up and went to community College stopped gaming as an escape, and only really gamed when I was bored and by game I ment like single player games or the classic gta ports on mobile, plus I was also getting bored of gaming as a whole, when I attended community college I got all my transferable general education courses so then I went to a 4 year collage while getting my AA degree therefore moving into taking engineering courses. Then I majored in aerospace engineering and got lucky and got an internship at nasa during the summer in the pathway program into GSFC which is the goddard space fligt center, and now you may ask do I game at all? Well nowadays I just game if my friends want to game like among us and stuff etc. But game by myself? Not anymore really, I just sorta grew out of games. They feel more like a job then an actual game nowadays.

In that time I’ve had family die and I chronically underachieved. I’m always just sort of hanging on. So this is my recommendation: whatever you are using games for, it’s a crutch that doesn’t help any of the healing. I’m 41 now, just starting to quit, and I have so many regrets about the half a lifetime I’ve wasted.

      You can take what you learned from games or the experience of introspecting how you felt after and transfer those skills into real life if you don't beat yourself up about it. If you understand exactly why you retreated to specifically video games and not other things.
      You showing a lot of emotional intelligence from your description of why you did what you did that most people can't even reach. If you didn't play games, maybe it would have been something more destructive that would have prevented you from being able to introspect like this.

    *I am 34y old and I have a job I work from home 10 hours per day 4 days a week and during the shift I barely do anything is just a customer support position and I have to wait for chats to come and there aren't many and bought a playstation 5 to kill time during those 4 working days a week. It’s different for everyone, but if you have that much free time during your shift why not spend it on building a business or learning/bettering yourself? Games aren’t just bad because you’re wasting time being unproductive, but because they also sap your drive to achieve things in real life. Like I said, it’ll be different for everyone, but I personally don’t think there’s an argument for video games being healthy or productive because there’s a very strong counter argument for every point that I’ve seen made.

But from a generational standpoint most of us are struggling and living paycheck to paycheck looking for good paying jobs that don't exist for the vast majority of people anymore. The value of the U.S dollar is so worthless that it makes it nearly impossible to afford even 1/3 of what the Baby Boomer generation had. It can be demotivating knowing that most of us will never achieve even a quarter of what they had in this economy.
