    Hi Andy..
    Thanks for the great video's.
    My singer 353 recently caught fire. Taking the cover of the motor, revealed the capacitor across the windings had broken down. The only information i could see on it is the rating (230v which is under-rated) @10Mhz. I can't see the value in micro farads.. i just wondered if you or any of your viewers knows the value...thanks...Chris Ball.

      OK, Chris, I will pin your question to the top of the comments. Personally, I would remove that completely and not replace it. My understanding is that was used to prevent radio frequency interference. You could also find them in the motor sometimes. They are not needed in modern times. There is information about this online and RUclips.

      Welcome, Christa. Your Granma made a good choice. The Genie is my favorite portable Singer; all wrapped up so it's good to go. Just in case you did not get the instruction manual for it, you can download a FREE copy here:www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/SINGER%20Genie%20353%20Sewing%20Machine.pdf
      Also, last June I made a 20+ video playlist for the 353. All about repair and maintenance, including where and how to oil it. If your machine has just been sitting for a long time, doing a good oiling before using it is a great idea. Here is the link to the videos:

    Thank you Andy!
    You have amazing knowledge and skill when it comes to understanding and sharing how sewing machines work. I was about to give up, as I couldn't get the tension right, when I decided to watch your video. I had re-thread my machine so many times, using the guide in the manual and on the cover, but missed that last little slit on the needle holder. You've saved my machine. The tension still seems to need to be set higher than I'd like, but I don't think I'm ready to tackle the tension mechanism yet.
    However, thanks to another of your videos. I was able to change the motor belt, which I never thought I could do.Thanks for your generosity in sharing with us.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  2 года назад +1

      Look at you, Sandy. Changing motor belts and all. Good on you 👍 When you feel the needle thread requires too much tension it can be lint build up in the tension assembly; between the discs and on the coil of the takeup /check spring. You could try a gently cleaning by removing the needle thread and turning the dial to zero then lifting the presser foot. Now with tension off, you can blow some canned air from the sides, or use a hairdryer with no/low heat but high airflow. I've also had luck covering the assembly with a vacuum hose and lifting/lowering the foot slowly a few times. Any of those can help get debris out of the discs/spring. Even a tiny ball of lint can prevent the discs from squeezing the thread for tension, so you have to use higher and higher settings. I have also used 1/4 inch strips of old t-shirt material dipped in alcohol to "shoeshine" between the discs gently being careful of that check spring... easy does it. You can use tooth floss too, but be sure it is not waxed. Thanks for the nice comment, and thanks very much for watching my channel.

      Thank you for the very nice comment, Mercy. It is a very capable machine and good for clothes making and alterations. It's great that it has the Multi-Stitch ZigZag (stretch zigzag) and Blind Hem ZigZag built right into the machine. Also, if you like, you can download the original 56-page Instruction Manual for free 👀 from the Singer Support page here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=353 It shows how to use all the features and
      includes directions for different materials, how to make buttonholes, how to sew in a zipper, change the light bulb (LED is recommended now) and basic maintenance and oiling. Most people don't read the manual these days but they are valuable in my opinion. I also have 22 more videos for this machine in a playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKJvzcqn97Yh8lvx-tbdFl2p I cover almost every part of the machine for maintenance and replacement including timing and belt replacement as well as annual deep lubrication and so forth. Hi my daughters machine said stitches are tight on top and lose on the bottom it’s a 354 Genie I purchased for my wife when they first came out .it is not over use just some simple mending

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  2 года назад

      Did you have hands-on the machine, William, or just heard this from your daughter? When threading loops on the bottom that usually means you have very little or no tension on the needle thread. Be sure she is threading the tension unit properly as shown in the manual, including lifting the presser foot before threading. The tension unit could also be dirty or have lint in it preventing the tension discs from squeezing the needle thread. I have several videos for the machine in a playlist ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKJvzcqn97Yh8lvx-tbdFl2p including videos about repairing the tension unit. Conversely would be if something is wrong with the bobbin case or threading of it and there is WAY too much tension on the bobbin thread, but normally it is an upper tension mistake or problem.

    Elle est pas mal cette machine, et beaucoup de points ! Mais elle se rapproche des machines familialles d'aujourd hui ...non ??? Je parle du design global, en plus je crois qu'elle est en plastique non ? Mais je préfère la singer 301 car elle me paraît plus ancienne... et le design moins commun... merci beaucoup Andy de nous montrer toutes ces machines et leurs fonctionnement, en plus en ce qui me concerne j'apprends l'Anglais en même temps !!! C'est super !!! Take care🎩🎩🎩

      Oui, plus moderne que le 301A, et un boîtier en plastique et un engrenage en plastique. Vous avez un très bon sens du design si vous appréciez le style de la 301A. C'était un modèle très révolutionnaire; la première aiguille oblique jamais fabriquée, tout en métal, en aluminium et en acier, à l'exception des cordelettes en vinyle, de la borne en bakélite, de l'œillet et des pieds en caoutchouc, de la roue dentée textolite et de l'ampoule en verre. Avec tout ça ça pèse moins que ce modèle Genie. Merci d'avoir regardé Andy Tube.

    Thanks for all the great info Andy! I just purchased my Genie 353, no manual and the little tension button that holds the stitch plate down is popped up. Can you tell me how to adjust it? The machine works great but obviously, that catches on my fabric and the plate is not secure. Also, is there a good resource for manuals? All the current sites I've found want me to download a bunch of stuff and I just want the manual. I'm happy to pay for it. Thank you for any information.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  2 года назад

      Hi, Kathi. Thanks for watching my channel. I'll try to answer your questions. Starting with manuals, you can download a free copy of the Instruction Manual directly from the Singer Support page here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=353
      You can buy & download a copy of the Service Manual for $8.99 here: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-353-354-genie-sewing-machine-service-manual/ (The SM does NOT show about fixing the Plate Clamp)
      You can download a free copy of the Parts List & Diagram here: p8.secure.hostingprod.com/@site.singeronline.com/ssl/instructions/Sgr_353_354.pdf
      The "tension button" you mention is at the top of a post called the Plate Clamp. There should be a Plate Clamp Spring around that post you can see from the bottom of the machine. That spring puts downward pressure on the clamp to hold your needle plate in position. On models 353/354 the spring is held onto the post with a C-clip or CirClip. On most models (earlier) the spring is held on by a simple cotter pin, like the one in this advertisement: www.bonanza.com/items/like/162731261/Singer-329K-Throat-Plate-Pin-Clamp-179609-w-Spring-Clip
      If your clamp is popped up it may just need to be cleaned by dropping some alcohol down around the post of the "button top" to soften any dried oil and from the bottom, then adding a couple drops of oil. However, the spring may be full of lint b/c it sits next to the hook. You may be able to push down from the top to get it loose.
      If the C-Clip popped off and the spring slid down on the post then you would have no tension on the clamp, but it should slide up and down loosely, so I have the feeling it is just stuck in the up position. The service manual shows how to remove the machine covers if you want to get to the bootom of things 😊 but you can try the clean/lube from the top only first. If your sping and clip are missing the clamp should lift right up out of the hole it is in. If that is the case you can take the clamp to a hardware store and get help finding a spring and clip replacement.
      If you prefer videos to a service manual I have a playlist with 20+ more videos of working on the Genie 353 and you can find it here: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKJvzcqn97Yh8lvx-tbdFl2p Those videos show about removing the covers and servicing most of the parts inside the machine. Thanks again for watching my Andy Tube Channel, and good luck.

    It’s a great little machine after all these years.

      Thanks for watching my channel, Janan. It's been over 10 years since I bought any snap-on feet. All the vendors I linked to are reputable;e and I have used them in the past but please shop around. Sometimes you can also find vintage sets on eBay, but I guess you take the chance they might have the same problem as yours.

      Hola, Pilar. Thanks for watching my channel. Without seeing a video of your bobbin winder in action I can't say what is wrong. Many times the BW is a forgotten part on the machine and never gets cleaned and oiled. On a vintage machine, a good cleaning and oiling can eliminate many problems. saw the pinned comment and now I am wondering if older machines are prone to catching fire

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  11 месяцев назад

      Not at all. Some vintage machines had a capacitor to prevent electrical interference from the motor to radio and later, television equipment. They have not been used in sewing machines for decades that I know of. Some capacitors are 50 or 60+ years old and break down, swell up, split open, and leak chemicals. What can start the smoke and or fire is that when the capacitor fails it fails "Closed" meaning it just puts the electrical power straight through to the motor without the pedal being pushed on. I've heard a handful of stories from viewers who heard a noise in another room and walked in to find the sewing motor racing at full speed and no one in the room. Most Instruction Manuals stated to unplug the machine when not in use. An overheating motor and, over-heated loose chemicals can smoke and burn. If there are any concerns the pedal and machine can be inspected and if found, the capacitors can just be removed. Thinking of the millions of sewing machines, just the Singer brand alone, you rarely hear about one starting a fire.

    We find your videos, especially these about the Genie, most excellent. I have one that has a knocking sound when the take-up lever raises. I wish I could acquire this one you have for sale but, according to your ad on Craigslist, there is no shipping - we live in Georgia. If there's any advice on a fix for our Genie's problem it would be most appreciated. - Glenda Nelligan

      +Thomas A. Nelligan, Jr.
      Glenda, you are very kind; thank you. You can repair your Genie for much less than just the packing & shipping fees I would need to charge. When the take-up lever is going up, so are the feed dogs. The hook is rotating. All potential causes for the knocking you hear. Terry has a free guide on how to remove all the panels of the Genie. Being able to see all the moving parts could help you find what is hitting inside. www.tandtrepair.com/Genie_Items/Panel_Removal.pdf
      You can look for a SERVICE manual (not owners manual) on line for around $10 if needed. That can guide you to repairing the problems. It is surprising how small some of the clearances are on the moving parts. A dropped machine can move a part enough to cause problems. Example: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-genie-353-354-sewing-machine-service-manual/ I hope this will help, and share with us what you find the problem to be please. Then we will all know what to look for.

    You don't have to manually threadle the eye of the lever at the top. Just slip the thread over the lever and gently pull. The thread slides towards the back of the lever and gets automatically threadled as the eye is open towards the end at the back.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  5 лет назад

      Thanks for watching my video and leaving a comment. If you are talking about the Needle Thread Take-up Lever on this machine there is not an opening to slide in the thread. It has to be threaded through the eye. This is clearly shown on page 11 of the Singer Instruction Manual for Model 353 which is available for free at this Singer link: www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/SINGER%20Genie%20353%20Sewing%20Machine.pdf
      In addition to the manual, there are a couple of clear pictures of the actual Take-up Lever on the machine between 1:45 and 1:51 of this slideshow: ruclips.net/video/Tu2V-_EOgBI/видео.html
      I do not know if other Model 353/354 Genie/Starlet Machines had the type of lever you mention. I have not seen them.

    Hi..I have this same machine. Today the bobbin stopped turning for the needle to catch the thread

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  2 месяца назад

      Brace yourself, Pam. 90% chance you have a catastrophic failure of the plastic top gear on the vertical shaft. That shaft powers the timing belt pulleys on the bottom that make the hook work. Gear failure = no power = no hook turning = no sewing. The machine is about 50 years old and the gear gets very brittle and finally crumbles and breaks apart.
      You can buy a new gear online www.vintagesingerparts.com/products/new-replacement-top-vertical-gear-singer-part-445491-s?_pos=1&_psq=445491-S&_ss=e&_v=1.0
      The problem is the many, many steps to change out the gear. About 12 steps to take it out and 12 more to reassemble and adjust the machine. I know a couple guys who did it and they said it is doable but very time-consuming. You can buy the service manual that includes the instructions manualsoncd.com/product/singer-353-354-genie-sewing-machine-service-manual/ In my playlist for model 353 I have videos for some of the steps (not all) like removing the covers, needle bar, handwheel, belts, etc.
      ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKJvzcqn97Yh8lvx-tbdFl2p One of my viewers said he developed a shorter method for replacing the gear. He posted a slide-type video with some pictures and written instructions ruclips.net/video/Qv-UxAjbD9E/видео.html Sorry for the bad news. The indication is that the top gear on the vertical shaft has failed. Old plastic gear. You can buy a new gear/shaft for it www.vintagesingerparts.com/products/new-replacement-top-vertical-gear-shaft-fits-singer-models-242-247-248-252-257-259-267-300-350-353-354-360-362-368-1263-1280 The procedure to replace it is very involved and requires 12 steps to remove and then reversing those 12 steps to reassemble the machine. The instructions are in the original service manual which you can download here for $9 manualsoncd.com/product/singer-353-354-genie-sewing-machine-service-manual/ I've never done this replacement, but people have done it. Some use a workaround method of only removing the parts on the right side of the arm shaft from the gear. That is supposedly easier and faster. You can ask around on the online forums and groups to see if there is a better way.

    Hi Andy! I am having issues with bird nesting of my bottom thread, and I’ve tried everything to remedy it! Do you have any suggestions??

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  2 года назад

      Hi Jessica. Of course, there are a few things that can cause this. You don't describe "everything" you've tried to correct the problem so I'll mention a couple of the most common causes.
      Start with the needle thread and pull it completely out and rerun it thru the whole path. Be sure you have it correctly. You can download a free copy of the instruction manual if you'd like directly from the Singer Support page here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=353
      That manual also shows the correct way to insert the bobbin into the bobbin case. Errors in either of those processes can cause thread nesting.
      Next is the thread tension unbalance. In your case nesting under the fabric is a sign the bobbin thread tension is higher than the needle thread tension. That is usually caused by an error running the upper thread incorrectly thru the tension dial, and the one on the Genie is a little tricky. You can test to see if you did it correctly by running the thread all the way up to, but not through, the needle. Now lower the foot, set the tension to about 4, and start pulling down the needle thread. You should feel resistance from the tension discs squeezing the thread and now start tuning the dial slowly to a higher tension number while you keep pulling the thread. See? the thread should get harder and harder to pull. If it does not then the tension unit is misthreaded or may be dirty and full of lint that prevents the discs from squeex=zing the thread. Try cleaning the tension unit.
      Next would be if the bobbin case was threaded wrong by you or the tension spring on the bobbin case is full of lint, dirt, or too tight. The bobbin thread should pull off the bobbin in a counterclockwise path from the top left as you place the bobbin in the case, then the thread is routed behing the tension spring. So, if you have no/too little tension above, or too much tension below the top needle thread gets pulled down thru the fabric. Sometimes the tension spring on the bobbin case is way too high. You can tell just by pulling the bobbin thread and seeing if it pulls hard. I have a video for cleaning and adjusting a similar bobbin case if you feel that is the cause: ruclips.net/video/HT5XZ5eYYEQ/видео.html
      I have a complete Playlist for this Model 353 Genie with videos for removing the covers, cleaning, adjusting most of the parts, etc., and even removing and cleaning the entire needle thread tension unit if needed. You can find that Playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKJvzcqn97Yh8lvx-tbdFl2p
      Those are the most common causes so that's where we start troubleshooting first.
      Thanks again for watching my channel, and good luck.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  6 лет назад +1

      Welcome to Andy Tube, Abby. It is very frustrating when the needle thread breaks. There are a number of things that can cause this. What I list here is standard troubleshooting advice. You can go here and download a free copy of the original SInger Instruction Manual for your machine. >> www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/SINGER%20Genie%20353%20Sewing%20Machine.pdf
      Start with pages 6 & 7 to be sure you are using the correct TYPE & SIZE of a needle. Follow pages 8 & 9 and wind a fresh bobbin. Follow pages 10 & 11 and thread the bobbin case and the needle. Pay close attention to how you put the bobbin in the case to be sure the thread will come off in the correct direction. Problems here often cause the top thread (needle) to break.
      YES, pull out the existing bobbin and top thread and redo it all.
      Normal top tension is 3 to 4. Try sewing a simple straight seam. Working OK now? Congratulations!
      If the thread still breaks then go to page 50 and follow the breaking thread troubleshooting guide. OK now? Great!
      Thread still breaking? Oh man :( My email address is on the "ABOUT" page of my RUclips Channel. Maybe you can send a short video to me, or post it on your own RUclips channel. Of course, the tension unit, bobbin area, and needle plate should be clean and lint free. Following the procedure of rewinding the bobbin and rethreading the needle is often all it takes. Good Luck Abby.

      It uses Singer Bobbin 172336 also known as Class 66 Bobbin. It is a Plastic Bobbin. It has slightly curved sides. Sold all over the world in sewing shops and online sellers. Probably the best-selling bobbin in the world that fits 300+ Singer Models. It is not mentioned in the manual anyway, so I'm glad you asked. The Singer support page has been on and off for over a month now and not sure why. If you need a copy you can email to andymanuals53@gmail.com and ask them for the Singer 353/354 instruction manual and I'll have them reply with a PDF copy; at no charge. Happy Sewing.

      Why did it stop? Just kidding. With only that much information all I can do is give you this link to a document that shows how to remove the plastic panels on a Genie. I believe the spindle mechanism is built into the top of the back panel. You will need to open the panels to see what is going on. Maybe you just need a neww friction ring (rubber tire) or maybe a spring has come lose or broken. Maybe it just needs cleaning. Whatever the reason, the panels must come off. Good Luck.

    Andy, my bobbin is not winding on the machine. It will not rotate to get the thread on there. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  2 года назад

      Hi Jessica. It may be lacking oil on the spindle is all. Do not put a bobbin on the spindle and just move the spindle left & right a couplie of times. Now just try to spin the spindle with your fingers while it is on the left side. It should turn freely. If it is stiff or not spinning put a drop of oil on the top and let it soak down. If you put too much it can get on the rubber friction ring (tire) and for sure you won't wind a bobbin with a slippery tire. When the spindle turns easily try to wind a bobbin. If it still won't wind then the tire may be old and stiff and can't get a good grip on the handwheel to spin. Now you're talking about removing the cover and inspecting the tire and associated parts. This video goes into detail about the cover and BW system ruclips.net/video/SgA8Y_WMleo/видео.html Here are a cou0le of trusted sellers of the tire (there are many more and some sewing center may have it also) www.vintagesingerparts.com/collections/singer-model-353/products/bobbin-winder-tire-friction-wheel-29-mm-x-15-mm-x-7-mm-part-15287a

      Dang it! Your model 353 uses type 15x1 needles (called catalog 2020 before) It is the universal needle most machines use now and can be found almost everywhere in craft stores, Walmart, eBay, Amazon. You can use sizes 9-11-14-15-18. Small number = finer fabric and larger = heavier fabrics, size 14 most common. Singer brand, Schmetz, Organ, Dritz. There are special jeans and leather needles. All-purpose means OK for knit fabrics, but they make ballpoint needles for only that and sharp point for woven fabrics too. Then there's Teflon coated, etc. You can buy combo packs of different sizes. If you'd like a free instruction manual you can download a PDF from Singer at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=353 Happy sewing, Emile.

      www.vintagesingerparts.com/collections/singer-model-353
      thriftyfarmgirl.com/singer-354-genie-sewing-machine-parts
      Almost all of the 353/354 model parts are the same.

      You can buy the Service Manual for $8.99 here: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-353-354-genie-sewing-machine-service-manual/
      The only known weak part on the 353/354 is the top gear on the vertical shaft. Plastic. A new gear is less than $10 but time consuming to replace. Here is an example of the top gear: studio.ruclips.net/user/videoM3bFtlV1Y6s/edit?Fmy_videos
      If the hook does not rotate or won't stay in time with the needle it's usually the top gear failing. 😒

      You are talking about the pull up retractable spool? Replacing because missing or broken? Yes, hard to find. Were you able to remove all the covers and look at the retaining clip inside the machine? My best luck with parts like this has been to look on EBay for sellers of other parts of the machine, and email them to see if they have what I need. I have always found someone who is parting out a machine, and they will list the part on EBay and notify me so I can buy it. I bought handle clips for my Genie in this manner.

      Hi Carol. I have never had to do this, so don't have the knowledge. Terry Fielding at www.tandtrepair.com/Genie_Series.html
      has the best info I could find in the past. He mentions that it requires removing the top main shaft of the machine, a tricky repair. I used his free guide to learn how to remove all the panels to access the inside. It is here if you need that >> www.tandtrepair.com/Genie_Items/Panel_Removal.pdf
      Originally he said he hoped to put up a guide for gear replacement, but I don't see it on his site. Don't hesitate to ask him about it though. It uses 15x1 type needles in sizes 9, 11, 14, 16, and 18. You can find a few brands and they often can be found in a multi-pack of different sizes. www.walmart.com/ip/SINGER-Universal-and-Ball-Point-Sewing-Machine-Needles-8-Pieces/24548274

      Sure. It's a straghtforward ZigZag model and easy to use. Forward, reverse, a couple different ZZ stitched, built-in light and auto presser on the the presser foot. It has one weak spot of a plastic gear on the top of the vertical shaft. When it breaks it is a very involved job to replace. If you look at this model to buy it, be absolutely sure the hook rotates normally and smoothly. When the gear breaks (it's 45 Y.O. Plastic) the timing belt and hook quit turning, period. If the gear is Ok then you could learn to sew on it, as you could with most vintage (pre-1975) models. After winding the bobbin you push on the center disc of the handwheel, but this time directly across from the little bobbin symbol. That puts the machine back into sewing mode. Not sure what "threaded with the knot" means, but some of what you describe can be tension problems, either the needle thread or bobbin thread.
      The machine may also have lost OR be losing the timing of the needle to the hook. Here is a playlist of videos for model 353: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKJvzcqn97Yh8lvx-tbdFl2p
      One of the videos explains how to check and set that timing. ruclips.net/video/qMOa5QP71as/видео.html You can just check it without changing anything.
      The original Instruction Manual is available for free from Singer Support: www.singer.com/search/support?title=353
      One other possibility is that the machine is 50 years old and the plastic gear on top of the vertical shaft has lost OR is starting to lose teeth. When that happens the turning of the hook becomes very erratic and the machine can sew OK one moment, then skip stitches the next. It is quite an ordeal to replace that gear on this model because it must be done from the top after removing and moving several other parts.
      The method is shown, step-by-step in the service manual you can buy and download here for $8.99 manualsoncd.com/product/singer-353-354-genie-sewing-machine-service-manual/
      The last video in the playlist I mentioned above is a link to a video by one of my viewers who developed some shortcuts to replace the gear.
      Other videos in the list show how to remove the covers and clean, remove, and replace other parts of the machine.
      Thanks for trying to save the machine and good luck.

      @@andytubesewing1953 thanks for the reply so I figured out the issue now I have a secondary issue. The bobbin thread is being pulled through to the top of the material. There’s no nesting or balling. I changed the tension and it helped a lot but when I do a straight stitch I can see the bobbin thread (I was using two tone to test) I tried adjusting the thread tension even to 0 and it still gives me the same effect. The thread I thread through the needle seems to be very stiff and when I try to pull the thread to cut it off, it snaps the thread and pulls the needle. I’m skimmed all of the play list and I’m not seeing any video describing what I can do . 😅 hoping I can get this fixed so I don’t have to get of the machine

      @@emilykochco Thank you. The presented problem is tension, either too much needle thread tension or too little bobbin thread tension.
      With the presser foot lifted you should be able to pull your fabric out to cut the thread, of course. The cause for the thread breaking and flexing/bending the needle can be the upper tension not releasing completely (dirty, maladjusted) or your thread size and needle eye size are mismatched.
      Forget sewing for a moment. Just lift the presser foot and try pulling upward on the needle thread just before it goes into the takeup lever. There should be barely any drag on the thread.
      If there is no drag then the problem is after the tension assembly so look at the needle/thread. If you DO have tension on the needle thread in the above test then look from there back towards the spool of thread for your problem. Here is the 23-video playlist for model 353: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKJvzcqn97Yh8lvx-tbdFl2p
      One of those videos is 81 minutes of everything I know about upper tension on model 353: ruclips.net/video/3zzAdVs_8Sw/видео.html
      It helps if you isolate the problem in a logical progression. On a thrifted machine, it should be cleaned and oiled before even trying to sew.

    What's the difference of the 353 & 354 models? Is one simply named the American "Genie" & the other the European "Starlet"?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  5 лет назад

      The models sold in America were labeled "Genie" and sold in other countries as "Starlet". Both Models. The 354 added a 4th stitch to the pattern selector; the "Elastic Stretch Stitch". Both models had "Blindstitch", "Multi-Stitch Zig-Zag" and "Plain Zig-Zag". Great question, Fred. Thanks for asking.

      I don't think was sold in the USA, which is too bad. It has all four of the stitches like the 354, but with the convertible bed into free-arm, it looks very sweet! Thanks for sharing.

    Is the light bulb replaceable?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  6 лет назад

      Welcome to Andy Tube, May. Yes the bulb can be replaced. The silver metal bracket that holds the bulb is on a hinge and swings down about 2 inches to access the bulb. You gently push the bulb in a little bit and turn it counter-clockwise and pull out. Replace it by pushing the new bulb in a little and turning it clock-wise. You can download a free copy of the original instruction manual for this machine at www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/SINGER%20Genie%20353%20Sewing%20Machine.pdf
      The bulb changing instructions are on page 48. The manual is full of information on using and maintaining the machine. Thank you for watching ANdy Tube.

      Why, you can't see through my hand? 😉 Sorry to block that view, Emile. When you bring up the loop of bobbin thread through the hole in the needle plate you open the loop of thread and take both the needle and bobbin threads UNDER the raised up presser foot and to the back behind the presser bar and needle plate. I say take the threads "between the toes" b/c some times the threads get wrapped around the front of the presser foot. You move the threads to the back so they do not get tangled into your stitch when you start sewing. The directions are on page 12 of the Singer Instruction Manual for Model 353 which is available for free from this safe link at SInger company: www.singer.com/search/support?title=353
      Thank you for asking and allowing me to clarify the method I was trying to demonstrate, and for watching my channel. Happy Sewing. ✨

    Is the drive system all metal parts? It looks very plasticity

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  5 лет назад +1

      Hmmm....drive system. Well, there is a motor belt and the timing belt runs on metal cogged pulleys. There is a plastic gear at the top of the vertical shaft. There are 3 pattern cams that are plastic. The handwheel is plastic. The horizontal arm shaft, counter-balances, take-up lever, connecting link, are all metal. The forked feed connection and feed lifter/rocker system is all metal. The frame inside is heavy cast aluminum. The machine carry weight is between 18 and 19lbs. You can see the inside here >> ruclips.net/video/-XrPJTtv7Sc/видео.html
