Sean Connery needed this role in order to not be typecasted as James Bond. His acting career took off as this courageous move.

this film pulled no punches. it delved into the mind of a child abuser in deep denial and one deluded by the imagined importance of his job/vocation. a brilliant journey into the mind of a tormented bottled up self-deceiving sexual predator in disguise going into a melt down as the reality of his true nature and tendencies unravelled and emerged. it took another lesser deviant to recognise and identify what he was. fantastic dark drama. it became obvious that he was the man they were actually after and not the ian bannen character, but it took the latter to expose the sean connery character. truly bleak

Wait, wait... This is not how I interpreted the story. Who is "the lesser deviant" you're talking about, the alleged child molester? I mean, we did see him wander in the streets all dirty and crazy in the middle of the night, whereas we didn't get any clues that it was actually the detective who molested all the girls... So, what part of the movie shows that Connery's character is "a self-deceiving sexual predator", except maybe for quick-cut flashbacks showing him caressing that molested girl which IMO are quite ambiguous: they could be showing he actually cared for the girl? Perhaps it's because of the direction, or it could be because of personal interpretation, but I had a feeling the movie doesn't portray him as a bottled-up sexual predator, more like a tormented and burnout police detective who really wants to hurt someone after everything he's witnessed in his career. One of the last quotes in the movie about him receiving all the pleasure and feeling all the emotions he ever wanted while he was beating the alleged child molester adds to this theory as well.
Honestly asking and trying to start a conversation, as the movie hit me hard and I'm still trying to connect all the dots.

@@VasjaStankovicThe greek title of this masterpiece fits perfect:
      Into the mirror, darkly.
Baxter committs crimes, Johnny dreams about. Johnny is a broken character and beating Baxter to death is a punishment for his own hidden desires.
Just my personal point of viel.

@@thomasfleischer83 Hm, an interesting angle. You're saying that the Greek title for the movie is "Into the mirror"? Wouldn't be the first time that people translating titles reveal more than they should :D

@@VasjaStankovicMany years ago I read a review with some background informations.
The actors didn't like it's title and so some countries changed it.
I come from Austria where many movie titles got nothing to do with the original.
