I don't think it's safe to assume he's awkward and trying to be a Chad. His goal is a contact cause he thinks she's attractive and he agreed to do it through the game. He's not at a bar, he's playing chess. Alex is being pretty petty by tearing his legitimacy down verbally, and he's not falling into the tests cause the agreement is for him to win a game in time. You're assuming he doesn't already know Alex's personality and he's some kind of idiot for choosing to challenge her? Maybe he likes that, maybe he wants the contact? Seems like he's trying to get what he wants by doing what he's good at, and she's trying to give him a hard time for it cause that's just her personality type. She pretends to be above others

From her pov, she knows you gotta be firm in rejection with men cause they don't know how to take no for an answer sometimes. Sometimes men think a coy "haha maybe not" girls say to let men save face is code for "oh she said 'maybe', omg I still have a shot, lemme keep trying." Alex did the right thing by telling him she is absolutely not interested from the beginning, so it saves both of their time.
