  • What do you bring into the pulpit? Full manuscript? Outline only? Some other combination of pulpit notes? In this video, I discuss my use of full manuscripting along with my visual spatial memory for preaching without notes in the pulpit.

I never like packing all my books. For some reason, though, I almost enjoy putting then back on the bookshelves.
Excellent Video once again. God bless you and your family.

As someone that is new to this this is a huge help. I personally use an iPad but I love the idea of memorizing blocks

Where ever you are pastoring, I hope there are young preachers who are learning from you. What a rich environment for maturing young men.

I use an iPad to type out notes because it tends to be easier to edit later on if need be. I essentially write my own commentary, verse by verse, with main points. Then I preach using that. It helps me to grasp the text better so I only look at my notes for quotes and cross references.

I didn't like power point and didn't want to be in bondage to that. I had sermon bulletin inserts with message points and bible verses. That way people could take home something to study. When preaching I had followed Charles Stanley's way of preaching. That worked well for me. I also followed the advice of Pastor Reynolds who said know enough that you can talk your way through it if need be. That also worked for me. There were things I knew I wanted to say and those would be written down but I also left room for the Holy Spirit. Everyone needs to do what works for them. You can't copy someone else. You can can copy a method and work it to you, but you need to be yourself and natural. Good video.

Thanks for another great video. The big thing for me when preaching is the worry about losing my train of thought and then going off on one. I write out a full script and then try to remember the flow so as to not stand and read off the sheets, but would worry (at least initially) if I didn't have it.

This was so great. Thanks for the help, Pastor Matt! I would love you to do more of this stuff, where you go into even more detail about your sermon notes, because I'm totally the guy who is "straddling both worlds" with my notes and the congregation, and I'd love to change things up.

Great practical tips! I've always preached from a manuscript and I am working towards getting away from that. To be honest, it was the fear of forgetting something that trapped me to my notes. Thanks for the info!

I've always preached with three notebook paper pages worth of notes and points and my bible. I got a small notebook and I'm going to try to condense my sermons down into my little notebook.

Hey Matt, thank you for sharing! Question: if you mainly go off the bolded headers, pictures, and main points, why have the body of text below each header? It seems like you would be fine with just bringing in a list of the headers into the pulpit. Is it just a safety net? Just curious. I am fairly new to preaching, always trying to get better, and I’m trying to find the method that works best for me. I tried this two days ago and I liked it, but I don’t think I devoted enough time to memorizing thought for thought. Will try again here soon.

It is the process of writing itself that sharpens my thinking and moves my ideas from general to precise.

I understand that, but I’m talking about after you process it all out. I guess what I am asking is have you ever tried to write it all out then consolidate those 3 pages to just one sheet with the bolded headers for when you walk into the pulpit?

Good job i appreciate it. This seemed geared toward a topical sermon, is verse by verse exposition the same?

Personally, I find it impossible to memorize a 40 minute sermon, sentence for sentence. Some may experience a miracle every Lord’s day, but I’m sure a large majority of preachers can’t do this.

I take my whole 10- 12 pages manuscript to the pulpit in my tab so I don't have to turn any pages. No matter how hard I try I cannot remember what I've written so I need the whole word to word script in front of me. I tried doing it without it a few times but it didn't help.

I do not have trouble in remembering block for block, but I just cannot articulate and speak fluently. My grammar is broken and that is my biggest stumbling block. Any encouragements or suggestions?
