You could do both build locations. On your favorite idea make it a full base for your ships. Commercial District. Mining, transport, welding, etc. in the second base option make it a military base. Attack craft, etc. military bases and civilian bases on the same asteroid and everyone would intermingle inside the asteroid.
It sounds like so much time and work but i had a similar though, maybe even had the asteroid as a capital ship base for mining rigs etc, and the planet base as the main refinery with smaller ships landing. i really really hope Skye keeps at this and doesn't drop off again.
That massive crater area is just begging for a giant glass dome to enclose a pressurised base. I can just imagine the panoramic views as you come along a tunnel from the docking port and step out into a massive observation blister.
I can already see the vision - ships landing on the platform and going trough the long hallway to the large rooms with huge windows, filling the craters with living quarters and such.
Followed for timerborn content, stayed for the personality, love to see you dig deep (literally) into a game that i have poured alot of time and heart into myself, love the setup for the videos. Keep them coming!
would love to see a mono rail lift that goes through the center of the asteroid, connecting both sides. Pretty easy to make with wheels. Excited to see how this base comes alive.
Looks like your ore detector went missing after drilling through the asteroid. :D I think a space elevator from the surface base to the asteroid would be torturous for you to do.
Make the dock space a huge glass dome mimicking the asteroids potatoe shape. Large vast glass windows to the outside space and the planetscape would be so cool. You would fly your ships to a large glass dome and lower them with a piston to the interior of the asteroid
36:17 Due to proximity, Maybe a hybrid concept. Big landing bay on the flat for large ships and small landing bays in the crater you like. Makes sense to me. This game is next on my list to play.
I'd say do landing pads at each of the tunnel entrances--still keeps the utility of the ring, but maybe not as aesthetic. Could also use those tunnel entrances for gun towers, too!
Dear Skye, all those ideas are great! Loving what you're doing so far, im picturing the end result is the rock either gets completely mined, or it becomes a giant space ship.
at absolutely no discredit to any prior episodes, this was my favorite. jam packed with everything from drilling & building to design processes, and all the injuries in between.

I've just had New Years Covid and spent the last three days binge watching this series in a fevered delirium. it made the whole thing survivable, thank you. A few ideas - these mavity generators will let you pick which way is up, yes? How about in the control spire complex, "down" is actually towards the fat end, so incoming vessels can be viewed through a glass "roof" as they park on the "wall"? - that second area of interest towards the back end might make for a nice resort; glass it over, put in some bars and some recreational facilities, could look quite nice. - can you strap an engine to a rock and make it move?
Skye, grab a programmable block and find "Izzys inventory management" script in the block, it automatically sorts your stuff for you and auto reorganized refineries to get through stone first Almost forgot, love the videos keep up the work brotha
Abandon the ring idea but still build out of the holes and make a dock. Then maybe make big solar panels in a diamond shape or something and decorate. And do the flat dock with the control tower idea! The asteroid kind of looks like a ship so with that you could make it appear as a mobile asteroid/carrier. Sorry for the book!
The Flat area with the control tower is a brilliant idea as you could make it the "shipyard" where you build the capital ships. But also the side area would be the defense base loaded down with drone fighters and such. Really cool ideas all the way around. Thank you for doing these.
I like your choice for the landing platform. Good defense position. Have a huge glass viewing area in the crater hole 🕳️ with shops and eateries! Projected a good spot on the other side like emergency exit. So cool though. Thanks for putting the grind work in for us!
Considering the limited amount of resources readily available during the initial phase of construction of the Space base I was so glad when you said you were actually collecting reasources unlike in the case of the previous hole you made where you didn't collect anything.
I like the ring idea, as for the diagonals, instead of trying to stick to the same plane, you could try using a hinge to rotate the plane by 45° and build another straight tunnel. Then you’d just have to find a way to join them
Came here to suggest hinges too. It can be 8 units with 135° joint, or 6 units with 120° hinge (this allows 30° tapered blocks at both ends for nice symmetrical view), or larger (12/18/24/36) number of units for a more circular look and smaller joint gaps. Nice things about this is you'll be working with modular units, and can test two units to decide on a design. Then blueprint and project.
HOLY S^&T you have gone from being a complete novice to a true SPACE ENGINEER! Please tell me you have every intention of getting Space Engineers 2, if you think some builds are becoming too mahoosive then opening it up to a couple friends to help would maybe quicken it and have fun at the same time. The builds you have undertaken are crazy I cant even get myself into space without blowing myself up lol
Hi Skye, love the series and episode, my pennies worth for an idea, I would incorporate all the elements of your ring idea, I would segment the areas for each specific purpose, for instance, one section for resource gathering from asteroids with hangers and ships, a section for outpost to outpost transfer of resources, a ship building/space port/repair area, a fuel port where for instance you can mine the ice from home planet to convert into fuel for interplanetary travel. The centre of the asteroid being the control point for all sections like a glass dome, I am fully aware that your builds are incredible the only reason I have posted my thoughts is because you had welcomed thoughts, I can’t wait to see what you decide!
What your working on now ,working in that chunk that seems gouged out was my initial thought for the asteroid base, it just seemed to fit. So current direction would be my vote.
defo a space fish when you zoomed out at the very end there's a crater that looks very much like an eye and you have already created the spine. around 36.00 onwards giant space grouper lol love this series cheers
A really easy way to make a solar tracker is with the custom turret controller, there’s a setting to make it track the sun automatically! Great series I’m so excited that you’re playing space engineers and liking it the second one is in the works and I’m pretty sure there’s even an alpha out or coming out soon!!
Amazing. Do all of it. if the rings are not thick enough you can build on them/around them some more. landing area on the outside for bigger ships, very cool.
Happy new year Skye, Picture and everyone! I like the 'favourite spot' with the massive cliff next to it (for starters obvs). I immediately imagined a 360 degrees panoramic viewing deck on the summit of that cliff. Great views of the planet surface and outer space all around. Maybe even a revolving bar area? (The shape of that mountain looks a bit like a nose btw... I can think of some names for the landing area below it. Just need to avoid it being too rectangular... or make a reference to Chaplin to avoid confusion) Playing around with different gravity orientations could be fun as well: the control deck looking straight ahead/down along the cliff surface at the ships landing in the valley. Anyway, I'm confident you'll cook up something amazing, chef.
You *might* be able to put hinges, and build the ‘diagonal’ hallways straight, then turn them into position, and lock them to the next ring section with connectors on hinges, and have there be air locks at the ends of each ring section (for protection against de-pressurizing the entire ring in event of damage) Not actually sure it would work, but it might be worth experimenting with small scale real quick.
You could pressurize each individual ring segment yes, but you can't have an airtight connection between subgrids. The only way to create an airtight connection is by merging two grids together with merge blocks which is impossible because it's a ring. The issue with pressurizing each segment is just that it'd be a pain to use. Because you have to go through 4 doors every time go from one section to another. (2 doors for the airlock on one segment to space and 2 more from the space to the next segment. With space I don't necessarily mean that you would have to exit the ring, just the unpressurized zone in between segments that's exposed to the vacuum.)
Gotta say, the idea of using the natural terrain of the asteroid as your base foundation is pretty aesthetically pleasing. And why use only one of those two awesome spots? Use the first one (the one facing the skinny end) as the main landing bay area, then have an interior tunnel going to the second area (facing entirely into space) where you have your residential/entertainment areas. The cave inside the asteroid could be converted into your factory/construction area, and a spot somewhere between there and the two exterior areas could work fairly well as a sort of office space.
Love the ring idea. But tbh the one you came across as you were building the ring idea might be more on point and tie up with your shagger base idea back on the planet.
To line up blocks over long distances I use Hinges and/or Rotors with a camera on the end. I set the camera to max zoom and align the crosshair with the destination. You can also use a Custom Turret Controller. Then I turn the grid with the camera into a station and build off from there. takes a few minutes max. I love your enthusiasm in this undertaking. I've been building something similar for quite some time now and I wonder how shocked you are going to be, when you realize how much work this actually means. Building around asteroids changes the scale of everything. Next time I will choose the smallest possible asteroid I can fit a base into. That's for sure.
Funny enough, the miner I’m using on my Pertam survival is named the cigar miner🤣 (My modified survival pod is called the Flapjack, and I couldn’t think of a better name for a mining ship to sit on top🤷🏻♂️) Another great episode skye! Can’t wait to see how, or if you link the two bases(maybe via cargo drone😉)
I like your favourite idea and the secondary base location too. Maybe big ships land at your fav and small ships or something else uses the smaller spot. Maybe start with one of them first and have the other one as a longer term plan. Plus put that control tower in on your fav spot, with the biggest engines that you have at the far end to make the asteroid look like a ship. Your fave spot just looks a bit like a star destroyer from star wars...
It might be worthwhile to add some projectors at the surface projecting inward several tiles to avoid accidentally drilling through to the surface when expanding underground. But this is just speculation based upon what I have vicariously learned through this series.
Okay, I was right on the ring happening. One idea could be to actually use both of those areas of the asteroid. The larger one as the base for the explorer and the smaller side foot regarding big hauler to connect in to an industrial area. Kinda like main airport and cargo airport. Love the series
it's so cool to see what you come up with... sometimes just massive stuff that is waaaay to big :D... it's really entertaining to follow the process through your videos... and I can only imagine how much time it takes to do it...
I like the current idea and think it has some great potential. You would definitely be able to add hanger bays and landing platforms for your largest ship. I would use that spot and have a sentral tower going up with the contor of the rockface. You could add extra rooms back there for things.
I like the idea of a ring, even if it's just a rectangle. Something like DS9 with bigger and smaller landing platforms. Maybe you'd need two control towers; one at the top and one at the bottom but with a central command in the middle.
Complete the ring as a shipyard/defensive platform, but work on the actual base in the flat portion. That way you separate your ship building/exploration with your day to day/mining operation.
hey skye, for purely decorative projects might I suggest using the creative mode tools? You can switch in and out on the fly, then go back to survival once you're done decorating, it'll save you a lot of time and give us more to watch! I doubt it's going to be much fun to weld that ring lol
Idea 1. Ring. I’m indifferent. Idea 2 big flat dock, your favorite of the ideas. I agree, yes. Idea 3. Similar to idea 2, but in the smaller side crater. I say instead of a dock, make a room with big windows for a good view. In other locations on the asteroid, perhaps have other large windows viewing the planet. And since you are in 0 gravity, perhaps you can get creative with artificial gravity, as you don’t have to stick to the normal “up and down”… but you can have multiple different gravitational fields in different directions… You may have to experiment a bit as I’ve only dabbled in this. But it could turn out to be awesome.
I say go with what make you happy or you'll get burned out it would look neat making it look like a space station circles around the astroid like its doing research on it
Do whatever you think will be the best. Inatead of landing pads on the outside that lower you could have a blast door that opens and then have the parking/storage be inside the asteroid. Might be easier than having to move the entire landing pad down. Inside the asteroid would protect your ships from attacks as well
The ring around is nice, just don't do the big ring, just the one you made already. Like as the trade hub, where you can dock on to drop off resources and recharge, for automated mining drones and such. the main base could be more like a ship hangar, maintenance area where you actually park ships on a platform, i do like the idea of pulling the platform down into the asteroid as well.
An interesting idea I saw is to put the frame for the drill on (extended) pistons itself (so pistons going up outside, then going back down in the middle). Then in addition to lowering the drill arm, you can lower the drill frame, increasing the drill depth by 30% (for every 3 drill arm pistons we added an extended piston on the frame, giving us 10m extra depth for every 30m we already had).
Wow! Those three days doesn’t seem wasted to me. RnR. Boy, does this have some potential. I’d say scrap the ring. Seems to involve too much tedious repetitive construction/welding (if not some massive deep space welding/manufacturing/minig rig were to be constructed). Develop both the spots at girder 1 and 3. Likely for different functions. Potentially girder 1 for commercial/infustrial purposes. The crater at the third could be the outlet for swarms of defensive probes. An automated drone printing industry below the surface included.
I think building the base without the rings would be the way to go. I think the ring idea is good, but as its own thing not built around an asteroid. Kinda like a halo ring or a space station rather than a base on an asteroid. I like the idea of you building different bases in the craters.
If you still want the ring, you could make the diagonal sections as separate grids, attatch them with connectors and/or hinges, and then convert to station. You could even do several grids to make it rounder, and so that you would only need connectors. The only real issue with that is that you couldn't have a single pressurized space shared between multiple grids, but you could have a north, south, east, and west terminal, with industrial blocks, cargo containers, and extra external connectors between them that either don't have internal spaces or that you have to go through two airlocks with some vacuum between them to enter the industrial sections.
Having some sort of observation bubble or some sort of construction in one of the many round pits/pockets might be interesting. A dome perhaps, inlaid in the surface pocket. Could even be just to sit in and view the planet/stars/sytem. It could be conected via subsurface tunnels.
Love the base so far. Couple suggestions. There is a block to fill that spot on the ring you mention. I think its an inverted corner or something, its under the square armor group right next to the small corners you already used. For the solar panels, you can include a rotor and hinge, and use a turret controller(vanilla block) which has a sun tracking option. Making a couple really long measured lengths of blocks and blueprinting them can be really useful for this type of work. I like the ring idea but do what you want and see where it goes. Do all of them if nothing else.
I say do the large flat landing area near the clif with the control tower then make the crater side that is back a ways into a giant bubble dome habitat living area.
You could start with having a large beam projected from a ship, you will be able to see where it intersects with the asteroid and it being projected from a ship can be moved around until you're satisfied with the positioning. You can then follow the projection when you're hand-drilling.
One important aspect to keep in mind when building a base anywhere near a gravity well; Since you cannot jump through the gravity well, you'll always end up pointing your ship "above" the asteroid, away from the gravity well. So make sure you're visible from the dark side of the asteroid.
I like the dock and control tower in that big area. But the third gerder. As a manufacturer and living quarters. That the four directions in stead of rings but use them as larger docks for large ships
When going for an asteroid base I always put my industrial zone inside the asteroid, as why else have an asteroid base? I have a decent sized docking area on the dark side to protect it from meteor impacts, then I build a massive solar array on the light side with a nice glass covered area under the panels so that you have a great view of space, somewhat protected by the panels. I then use heavy armor blocks in the "recreational area" (the glass area) to create a box with medical stuff for re-spawning at the base or patching myself up. The industrial area is usually where I have storage, and I go ham on the storage as my goal in Space Engineers is to create a mothership that mines whole asteroids, manufactures mid sized ships (such as your green freighter) using projectors and welder blocks, and can fend off pirates and other threats. The ships it builds typically are either purpose built ships or combat ships to go after enemies offensively. This means it needs a lot of storage and the base needs even more than that so I build 30 or 40 large cargo containers in the base, as I aim for about ten LCCs on the mothership (the storage space needed for two ships about the size of your freighter, or I assume as I never bought that ship and deconstructed it to fit the components into storage containers).
My advice. Start with something small, functional, and pleasing to the eye. Then work towards expanding the base, but add some role play scenarios for your reasons to expand. Like “beaver got splat”. That made your timberborn series go from simple gameplay to entertaining story.
I would say it's a game where you can spend your whole life and still have something left to do. So whatever you do make sure to enjoy it because once you mine a location it's gone forever 😂
IMHO the ring wont work, because it wont be a ring, or octagon, it'll be square. Then again you could put some massive structures where the vertices meet.
It's in space, so the structure should be something that can only exist in microgravity. Like a branching Street of spindly docking pylons leading to the core. Also, that big flat spot is perfect for a monument to the sacrifice of Bruce Willis in Armageddon.
Well, that escalated quickly.... I just tought, that it will be a kind of a minimalistic starter base, but no, Sir, you went overboard... M y preference is your favorite too, but put the tower on top of that hill with a 360°view. The not-so-nice tunnel exit can host a nice weapon cluster, to show force for any uninvited "guests"
Happy New Year to you and Picture. I like the landing platform for smaller ships not sure how well you'll be able to manage landing big ships there. Need to see how your current ships look in the gap for scale. The tunnel down the middle screams for a monorail. Maybe also include cargo transport to move items too and from the landing area. Please keep the ring you've built. It gives it a work in progress/industrial look. Just my 2 cents. Love the series.
you weren't joking when you said you were a bit overwhelmed with what you were doing. whatever you decide, i'm sure it will turn out well. just don't give up on it.

wow love the new base but i like you fav and the back end base i would love to see you combined them to be one massive space station
Your fave spot just looks a bit like a star destroyer from star wars...
love u made this play through one my fav games cant wait for the se2 to drop at end of the mnth 😊
And since you are in 0 gravity, perhaps you can get creative with artificial gravity, as you don’t have to stick to the normal “up and down”… but you can have multiple different gravitational fields in different directions…
You may have to experiment a bit as I’ve only dabbled in this.
Inside the asteroid would protect your ships from attacks as well
with your ring structure, build the diagonals normally and attach them with hinges or similar and airlocks between them.
Just an idea. Cover craters that you aren't using for building main structures with domes and connect them with corridors inside the asteroid.
i agree i think that docks area you planning on that l shaped bit asteroid will be awesome perfect asteroid for base
I think building the base without the rings would be the way to go. I think the ring idea is good, but as its own thing not built around an asteroid. Kinda like a halo ring or a space station rather than a base on an asteroid. I like the idea of you building different bases in the craters.
The bigger area, a landing and base, the smaller spot, and access and solar collector array ;)
If you still want the ring, you could make the diagonal sections as separate grids, attatch them with connectors and/or hinges, and then convert to station. You could even do several grids to make it rounder, and so that you would only need connectors. The only real issue with that is that you couldn't have a single pressurized space shared between multiple grids, but you could have a north, south, east, and west terminal, with industrial blocks, cargo containers, and extra external connectors between them that either don't have internal spaces or that you have to go through two airlocks with some vacuum between them to enter the industrial sections.
woohoo I've been waiting from last year for this video ❤
lol ;)
There is no block that slopes on BOTH sides .. which is what is needed :)
You can then follow the projection when you're hand-drilling.
oh wow, this is going to be a big biiiig project. love it :D
Cant wait for the next upload anxiously waiting do t forget to praise lord clang
Do what makes you happy, as you will be the one who looks at it the most
My advice. Start with something small, functional,
and pleasing to the eye.
Then work towards expanding the base, but add some role play scenarios for your reasons to expand.
Like “beaver got splat”. That made your timberborn series go from simple gameplay to entertaining story.
No no the ring is a really good idea i dare you😉🤣 anyways good stuff as always just do whatever you feel like mate i will watch nonetheless❤️😁👍
Nasty looking ship
Super ambitious idea here... enclose the entire asteroid and make a kind of deathstar
It was an octagon ... you saw it was an octagon ...
Go with Your favourite idea. Great job, I really like Your videos!
It's in space, so the structure should be something that can only exist in microgravity. Like a branching Street of spindly docking pylons leading to the core.
Also, that big flat spot is perfect for a monument to the sacrifice of Bruce Willis in Armageddon.
I think that looks like a Protective Exploration of Natural Interstellar Systems base.
Use the favorite and do a ring like thing with defense around the asteroid
